It isn’t often a mystery surprises me. I mean, sure–I’m often surprised by the solution. But the storytelling of a mystery tends to be fairly structured, so I’m not often surprised by the journey along the way. I recently found Nelscott by way of a solid, deceptively simple short story in Chicago Blues, and decided to check out her longer works. Maybe it is because I went in without expectations, but Nelscott managed to surprise me in a very positive way.

Dangerous Road begins with Smokey Dalton driving down a road in a green Oldsmobile, musing on the events that led to his and Jimmy’s current state of homelessness. “We hardly speak to each other any more. There isn’t much to say. Martin Luther King, Jr., is dead, assassinated in our hometown, in our neighborhood, and both Jimmy and I played small roles in his death.” To Smokey, the seeds of the event were sown in December 1939, when Atlanta went wild celebrating the premiere of Gone With the Wind.

Smokey doesn’t stay very long in the past; he quickly returns to that fateful Monday in 1968 when Laura Hathaway first showed up in his office. “She said the name as if I should know it. I didn’t… I could wait for the information. Patience usually threw off white reporters. It often irritated white members of the Civil Rights Commission. I’d see which one she was.” It turns out that Miss Hathaway is bound by terms of her mother’s will to give Smokey ten thousand dollars, and both she and Smokey are concerned as to reasons why. It is curiously similar to a payment Smokey received a few years back from an anonymous source. Meanwhile, Memphis is in the midst of a serious struggle. The city sanitation workers are on strike, in a dispute dismissed as a “black issue.” When Smokey is asked by one of the leading ministers to play a peacekeeping role, Smokey refuses in an attempt to remain apolitical.

Atmosphere is done well. While Nelscott must have done a ton of research to be able to evoke 1968 Memphis, it is integrated well, feeling organic to the story. I admit, I wasn’t looking for a political story–but then, neither is Smokey. He is drawn in inadvertently, first as he attempts to help two teenage boys with an indifferent mother, and secondly through his ties to the black community. Of course, the case will hit Smokey personally–we all saw it coming from the beginning, even Smokey–but it wasn’t clear just how deep and intimate it would be. Narrative challenges of diving back into the past is done well, feeling seamless. The main characters are done amazingly well, with a lovely complexity to Smokey and Laura’s actions.

A Dangerous Road ended up taking me on an unplanned drive where I encountered a thoughtful time-period character exploration on a road marked ‘mystery.’ Not the breezy noir read I expected, it proved a surprisingly emotional journey. I strongly recommend it.

To βιβλίο είναι ένα πολύ καλό αστυνομικό νουάρ,που καταφέρνει να μεταφέρει τον αναγνώστη στο Μέμφις στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του '60 και στα γεγονότα που συνέβησαν τότε. Οπωσδήποτε αξίζει το χρόνο και την προσοχή κάποιου.
"Τότε γιατί 3 αστεράκια;" θα με ρωτήσεις.. Έλα μου ντε! Είναι κάτι που μου έχει συμβεί ελάχιστες φορές στα χρόνια που διαβάζω: ενώ ΞΕΡΩ πως το βιβλίο αξίζει,ΠΡΟΣΩΠΙΚΑ δεν με αγγίζει. :/ Ο Σμόκι Ντάλτον με 'κάλεσε' στα μέρη του να μου αφηγηθεί την πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία του,την καλογραμμένη,με τις ανατροπές και τα μυστικά της και τα όλα της,αλλά εγώ...βαριόμουν να τον ακούσω! Υπό άλλες συνθήκες πιθανότατα θα το άφηνα το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο στην άκρη μέχρι νεοτέρας. Δεν μπορώ να εξηγήσω το γιατί -κακό το timing,ψιλοκακή η ψυχολογία μου ή κάτι άλλο...- αλλά δεν με τράβηξε και πολύ. Βέβαια,άλλα βιβλία του είδους που διαβάζω παράλληλα μια χαρά το κρατάνε το προαναφερθέν ενδιαφέρον...

Οπωσδήποτε το προτείνω σε όσους ψάχνουν ένα καλό αστυνομικό νουάρ μυθιστόρημα,σε όσους ενδιαφέρονται για τη ζωή και το έργο του Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κινγκ και τα γεγονότα στον αμερικάνικο Νότο στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του '60.. Αναγνωρίζω πως μάλλον εγώ το πήρα στραβά εξ'αρχής,το βιβλίο σε καμία περίπτωση δεν είναι κακογραμμένο ή ανάξιο προσοχής.

Aπό τις μεγάλες εκπλήξεις του περσινού καλοκαιριού, και ένα από τα αστυνομικά μυθιστορήματα που άξιζε να επανεκδοθούν (2000).

Πρόκειται για ένα μυθιστόρημα που δεν είναι αμιγώς αστυνομικό μυστηρίου, αφού περιέχει στοιχεία από όλα σχεδόν τα λογοτεχνικά είδη: κοινωνικής περιπέτειας, πολιτικού θρίλερ, ιστορικής βιογραφίας, ερωτικής περιπέτειας κτ.λ. Πέρα από αυτή τη διαπίστωση, οφείλω να τονίσω ότι η Νέλσκοτ έχει κάνει εξονυχιστική έρευνα στα γεγονότα των 2 τελευταίων μηνών που οδήγησαν στη δολοφονία του Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κίνγκ.

Με έναν μαγικό τρόπο έχει συνδυάσει κομμάτια μυθοπλασίας και πραγματικών γεγονότων, ώστε να κάνει τον αναγνώστη μέρος της πλοκής και της ιστορίας του βιβλίου της. Ο αναγνώστης μεταφέρεται με όλες τις αισθήσεις του, σαν ταξιδιώτης στο χρόνο, στη ταραγμένη χρονιά του 1968, και ακολουθεί τον παλμό των γεγονότων, αγωνιώντας για όλους σχεδόν τους ήρωες του βιβλίου.

Ο κεντρικός ήρωας της Νέλσκοτ, ο Αφροαμερικανός Σμόκι Ντάλτον δεν είναι ο κοινός ιδιωτικός ερευνητής των αστυνομικών μυθιστορημάτων: είναι γνώστης των γεγονότων που τον περιβάλλουν, τα οποία δεν εξετάζει με κυνισμό, αλλά, ανάλογα τη περίπτωση, καί με συναίσθημα καί με λογική, διαθέτει υψηλή κοινωνική και συναισθηματική νοημοσύνη, και δεν ντρέπεται να δείξει ανθρωπιστικό πνεύμα ή να στηρίξει ηθικά κάποιους από τους ήρωες του βιβλίου. Μέσα από την έρευνα για την άγρια δολοφονία των γονιών του, θα ανακαλύψει ξανά τον εαυτό του και θα δοκιμάσει τα όριά του σε κάποιες αρκετά συγκινητικές στιγμές του βιβλίου.

Το μυθιστόρημα, χωρίς να σοκάρει, περιέχει κάποιες σκληρές σκηνές και διαλόγους, όπου περικλείεται όλη η ουσία των φυλετικών διακρίσεων, και των επικίνδυνων πολιτικών παιχνιδιών που παίζονταν καί από τη πλευρά των λευκών, αλλά καί των μαύρων. Τσακίζουν, επίσης, κάποιοι διάλογοι όπου απαξιώνονται η τηλεόραση και ο τύπος ως μέσα αποπροσανατολισμού και δημαγωγίας.

Η Νέλσκοτ κάνει κάτι ακόμα πολύ έξυπνο: μόνο, σε ελάχιστα σημεία που βοηθούν τη πλοκή και την εξέλιξη των γεγονότων, αφήνει να αναπτυχθεί μέχρι ένα επαρκές σημείο το ερωτικό ειδύλλιο μεταξύ του πρωταγωνιστικού ζευγαριού, ώστε να μην κινδυνέψει η συνοχή και η εξέλιξη των σημαντικών γεγονότων της ιστορίας.

Μοναδικό μειονέκτημα του βιβλίου θα έλεγα ότι είναι κάποιες προβλέψιμες και απότομες εξελίξεις που υπάρχουν προς το τέλος του βιβλίου, οι οποίες θα προσγειώσουν ελαφρώς τον αναγνώστη, αλλά μόνο για να τον ταξιδέψουν μέχρι την συνέχεια των περιπετειών του Σμόκι Ντάλτον στο επόμενο βιβλίο της Νέλσκοτ, 'Δωμάτια γεμάτα καπνό' (2000).

Το μυθιστόρημα ήταν υποψήφιο για Βραβείο Edgar Καλύτερου Μυθιστορήματος 2001.

Y.Γ.: Δεν μπορούσα να το αφήσω από τα χέρια μου και το προτείνω ανεπιφύλακτα, ακόμα καί σε αναγνώστες που δεν τους αρέσουν οι λεπτομέρειες περί πολιτικών γεγονότων!!!

Μέμφις, 1968. Ο έγχρωμος Σμόκι Ντάλτον εργάζεται ως ιδιωτικός ντετέκτιβ σε μια πόλη και σε μια εποχή που οι έγχρωμοι δεν είναι καλοδεχούμενοι. Ο Σμόκι ήταν συμμαθητής και καλός φίλος με τον Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κινγκ, τον οποίο οι περιστάσεις καλούν στο Μέμφις για να εμπνεύσει τον κόσμο και να ηγηθεί μιας πορείας διαμαρτυρίας. Το μυθιστόρημα της Kris Nescott ξεκινάει σχεδόν ταυτόχρονα με τον θάνατο δύο έγχρωμων εργατών του Δήμου από ατύχημα, όταν ένα σκουπιδιάρικο τους συνέθλιψε. Αυτό το γεγονός οδήγησε τους εργάτες της καθαριότητας σε απεργία και σε επεισόδια κατά τη διάρκεια της πορείας που ακολούθησε.

Ο Σμόκι είναι ξεκάθαρα υπέρ της κατάργησης του φυλετικού διαχωρισμού αν και ποτέ δεν ανακατεύεται σε πολιτικά ζητήματα, τα οποία διαφοροποιεί από τις επιθυμίες και τη θέληση του απλού λαού, μιας και οι πολιτικοί μπορεί κάλλιστα να καπηλευτούν το κοινό αίσθημα για δική τους ωφέλεια. Όπως λέει χαρακτηριστικά ο ίδιος: «Έτσι έβλεπα τον εαυτό μου: σαν έναν άνθρωπο που δεν ήταν πρόθυμος να εμπλακεί προσωπικά σε κρίσεις αλλά ο οποίος καθάριζε, έναντι αμοιβής, όσα άφηναν οι άλλοι πίσω τους» (σελ. 25).

Ο Σμόκι προσέχει ένα δεκάχρονο παιδί, τον Τζίμι, αδελφό του Τζο, και γιο μιας πόρνης που «έχει χάσει τον εαυτό της» τελευταία, σε σημείο να εγκαταλείψει τα παιδιά της ζώντας σε άλλη πολιτεία. Ο Τζο παρασύρει τον αδελφό του σε άσχημα μονοπάτια, όπου μυστηριώδη πακέτα αλλάζουν χέρια, κάτι που κινητοποιεί τον Σμόκι για να προσφέρει ένα καλύτερο περιβάλλον στο παιδί. Η ιστορία αυτού του μικρού ήρωα είναι συγκινητική και απόλυτα ρεαλιστική, μιας και με αφορμή την αγάπη του για τον Τζο ο Τζίμι θα παραστεί μάρτυρας μιας συγκλονιστικής σκηνής που θα αλλάξει την πορεία της ζωής του για πάντα.

Και σα να μη φτάνανε όλα αυτά, στο γραφείο του Σμόκι εμφανίζεται μια γοητευτική λευκή γυναίκα, η Λόρα, που του αποκαλύπτει πως η μητέρα της, που απεβίωσε πρόσφατα στο Σικάγο, του αφήνει ένα σημαντικό χρηματικό ποσόν ως κληρονομιά, κάτι που την ξάφνιασε, μιας και δεν τον έχει ξαναδεί στη ζωή της. Το ίδιο έκπληκτος όμως είναι και ο ντετέκτιβ, αφού δεν ξέρει κανέναν από τους γονείς της. Σταδιακά όμως αυτή η υπόθεση θα πάει πολύ πίσω, πολύ βαθιά και θα φέ��ει αντιμέτωπους και τους δύο με ένα μυστικό που έπρεπε να μείνει καλά φυλαγμένο.

Η γραφή είναι πρωτοπρόσωπη, γρήγορη, με κινηματογραφική σχεδόν ροή και περιγράφει μια συναρπαστική ιστορία με ��ια σωρεία ανατροπών που δε με άφησαν να πάρω ανάσα. Φυσικά και αναπτύσσεται αίσθημα μεταξύ του Σμόκι και της Λόρα, ο τρόπος όμως που διαλέγει η συγγραφέας να το χειριστεί είναι σκληρός, σχεδόν κυνικός, γιατί το τοποθετεί σε ένα κοινωνικό πλαίσιο που φέρνει αντιμέτωπες τις επιθυμίες με την αυστηρή πραγματικότητα. Με ελάχιστες ερωτικές σκηνές και ταυτόχρονα εξαιρετική ένταση μεταξύ των πρωταγωνιστών, με πολύ καλά καλλιεργημένη εξέλιξη της γνωριμίας και της σχέσης αυτής, ξεδιπλώνεται ένας έρωτας καταδικασμένος, πνιγμένος στις παράπλευρες απώλειες της εποχής και του τόπου, όχι όμως λόγω του κοινωνικού ταμπού (λευκή με μαύρο; Ποτέ!) αλλά λόγω της κρυμμένης ιστορίας που δεσμεύει τον Σμόκι και τη Λόρα.

Βήμα το βήμα, μέρα τη μέρα, η Λόρα αρχίζει να νιώθει πως το στέρεο οικοδόμημα της ζωής της αποσυντίθεται και καταρρέει. Ποιοι ήταν στην πραγματικότητα οι γονείς της και γιατί της έκρυβαν πράγματα; Τι τους συνδέει με τον Σμόκι Ντάλτον; Τι συνέβη εκείνο το βράδυ του 1939 στην Ατλάντα, όπου παρευρέθησαν οι πρωταγωνιστές της ταινίας «Όσα παίρνει ο άνεμος» στην επίσημη προβολή της; Ποιοι και γιατί λιντσάρανε τους γονείς του Σμόκι, αναγκάζοντας τις αρχές της πόλης να τον φυγαδεύσουν σε ανάδοχη οικογένεια;

Εκτός από το συναρπαστικό μυστήριο, έχουμε στέρεη αναπαράσταση της ατμόσφαιρας που επικρατούσε στην Αμερική την εποχή του Πολέμου στο Βιετνάμ και της τρομοκρατίας των Μαύρων Πανθήρων, ρεαλιστική απεικόνιση των συγκρούσεων, των πορειών και των καταστροφών στο Μέμφις το 1968 και μια καλοσκηνοθετημένη σεκάνς με τη δολοφονία του Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κινγκ. Τα γεγονότα περιγράφονται όπως έγιναν, ένιωσα τον καπνό από τα λεηλατημένα καταστήματα, φοβήθηκα για την τύχη του όχλου όταν ξεκίνησαν επεισόδια στις πορείες, συμπαραστάθηκα στον Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κινγκ και τρόμαξα με το γεγονός πως η δολοφονία του ίσως ήταν οργανωμένη για να μην προβεί σε διεκδίκηση της προεδρίας των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών. Το συγγραφικό εύρημα να υπάρχει αυτόπτης μάρτυρας της δολοφονίας, κάτι που θα εκτινάξει την αγωνία στα ύψη και θα δημιουργήσει το δεύτερο βιβλίο με ήρωα τον Σμόκι, ήταν αναπάντεχο.

Το μυθιστόρημα «Ένας επικίνδυνος δρόμος» είναι το πρώτο μιας σειράς περιπετειών με τον Σμόκι Ντάλτον, καλογραμμένο, τεκμηριωμένο, ρεαλιστικό, με ένα προσεκτικά μελετημένο ιστορικό φόντο, αληθινούς χαρακτήρες που με παρέσυραν, με συγκίνησαν, με απογοήτευσαν, με εξέπληξαν και μια ιστορία αγάπης που θέλω κάποια στιγμή να δικαιωθεί. Κοινωνικό και αστυνομικό, με περιστατικά και εξελίξεις που ξεφεύγουν από την πεπατημένη και μια γραφή που ρέει ασταμάτητη ως την τελευταία σελίδα, είναι ένα βιβλίο που με προβλημάτισε και άφησε να εννοηθούν πολλές ομοιότητες του τότε με το σήμερα ως προς το φυλετικό κα γενικότερα κοινωνικό κομμάτι της αφήγησης.

Το βιβλίο κυκλοφόρησε για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα το 2005, όμως εγώ αγόρασα την καινούργια έκδοση που κυκλοφόρησε μέσα στον Ιούλιο, με πιο ωραίο εξώφυλλο και σε πολύ χαμηλή τιμή χάρη στην έκπτωση της Πρωτοπορίας. Συγγραφέας είναι η Κρίστιν Κάθριν Ρας, που είναι γνωστή για αρκετά ενδιαφέροντα βιβλία επιστημονικής φαντασίας και φαντασίας (π.χ. ένα βιβλίο της σειράς Star Wars και σειρές βιβλίων όπως οι The Fey, Retriaval Artist κλπ). Το βιβλίο αυτό είναι το πρώτο μιας σειράς, με ήρωα τον μαύρο ιδιωτικό ντετέκτιβ Σμόκι Ντάλτον.

Βρισκόμαστε στο Μέμφις των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών, το 1968. Ταραχές, διαδηλώσεις και απεργίες. Οι μαύροι στους δρόμους για ένα καλύτερο παρόν και μέλλον. Μαύροι ταραχοποιοί που θέλουν να πάρουν την θέση των κακών λευκών και να γίνουν αυτοί οι καταπιεστές. Ο Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κινγκ επισκέπτεται την πόλη αρκετές φορές. Στέκεται στο πλευρό των διαδηλωτών, αλλά είναι εναντίον κάθε είδους βίας. Σ'αυτό το κλίμα, ο Σμόκι Ντάλτον θα αναλάβει μια υπόθεση για λογαριασμό μιας λευκής και πλούσιας γυναίκας από το Σικάγο, ονόματι Λόρα Χάθαγουεϊ, που η οικογένειά της φαίνεται να έχει σχέσεις με το σκοτεινό και τραγικό παρελθόν του Ντάλτον. Οι δυο τους θα μάθουν κάποια συγκλονιστικά πράγματα. Στο μεταξύ πλησιάζει η μέρα που θα δολοφονηθεί ο Μάρτιν Λούθερ Κινγκ...

Ωραίο αστυνομικό νουάρ, με στοιχεία ιστορικού μυθιστορήματος και με κάποιες κοινωνικοπολιτικές προεκτάσεις. Το μυστήριο είναι αρκετό ώστε να κρατήσει την προσοχή του αναγνώστη, και οι αποκαλύψεις είναι επίσης ενδιαφέρουσες, αλλά βασικό προσόν του βιβλίου είναι η όλη αναπαράσταση εκείνης της εποχής στο Μέμφις. Η συγγραφέας με τις περιγραφές της κατάφερε να με ταξιδέψει στο Μέμφις της δεκαετίας του '60 και να ζήσω ο ίδιος τις ταραχές, τις διαδηλώσεις και τον αγώνα των μαύρων. Βέβαια κάποια πράγματα δεν μου πολυάρεσαν, όπως π.χ. ότι όλοι οι λευκοί ήταν κακοί με τον έναν ή τον άλλο τρόπο ενώ οι μαύροι οι καημένοι της υπόθεσης. Ε, λοιπόν, ποτέ τα πράγματα δεν είναι έτσι απλά, δεν είναι... άσπρο-μαύρο (sic). Και επίσης δεν μπορώ να πω ότι δέθηκα με τον πρωταγωνιστή, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι δεν είχε βάθος ή ενδιαφέρον σαν χαρακτήρας.

Γενικά πρόκειται για ένα καλό και ιδιαίτερο μυθιστόρημα, κράμα αστυνομικού νουάρ και ιστορικού μυθιστορήματος, με μυστήριο, ανατροπές και ζωντανές περιγραφές του Μέμφις της δεκαετίας του '60. Η γραφή είναι πολύ καλή και άκρως ευκολοδιάβαστη και οι χαρακτήρες καλογραμμένοι. Γενικά σίγουρα αξίζει μια ανάγνωση, τουλάχιστον από τους λάτρεις του είδους. Χθες επανακυκλοφόρησε και το δεύτερο βιβλίο της σειράς, με εξίσου ωραίο εξώφυλλο, οπότε από βδομάδα θα ανήκει και αυτό στην βιβλιοθήκη μου.

A very well-researched, well-written detective mystery set in 1968.

Black P.I. Smoky Dalton was born in Atlanta, Georgia and was a childhood friend of Martin Luther King, Jr. Now an adult, he is living and working in Memphis. Right in the middle of the sanitation workers strike, a rich, young white woman walks into his office to find out why her mother left him a very generous bequest in her will. There are many dramatic twists and turns to the plot as the mystery of how Laura Hathaway’s family is connected to Smoky is revealed.

Smoky Dalton is a very complex and likable character. All the characters in this novel were well-developed and believable. I really enjoyed how actual historic events of this period were woven into the story.

Format note: Mirron Willis did an excellent job narrating the audiobook. The only thing that bugged me about the audiobook was that every time Smoky mentioned the couple that adopted him he called them his “step” parents, “step” mother or “step” father. I finally checked my Kindle edition and discovered that in that edition, Smoky referred to them as his “foster” parents. I’m not sure why the script for the audiobook was altered.

The author tries to blend mystery with historical fiction and for the most part succeeds. The story take place in Memphis around the days of the assassinaton of Martin Luther King. The turmoil of the era is depicted in an authentic way and the atmosphere feels genuine and so bleak. The issues of racism are in the center of the story of course and are handled through the eyes of "Smokey", an angry but peaceful minded African American.
The mystery part of the book takes a while to pick up but is ultimately engaging. There is also a secondary plot regarding a young kid that needs protection, that is also connected to the story.
My main problem was that not all the plot threads blended nicely with each other. They felt at times like three different stories and sometimes I lost focus.
Also some readers might be put off by the protagonist who is not your typical likeable protagonist, but I found this approach to be more genuine to the story.

1st book in one of the best series I've read in recent years. Set in Memphis during the time leading up to Martin Luther King's assassination. You would never think that this book written about a black man in 1968 was written by a young white woman who probably wasn't even born when the story takes place.

Kris Nelscott is a pen name for Kristine Kathryn Rusch who writes under several other names and in conjunction with several other authors. Those collaborative meetings may help with the main gripe I found in the present volume: Smokey Dalton is a bit too wishy-washy for my taste.
As a black man in Memphis doing the Travis Mcgee/ Matthew Scudder non-private detective gig, Smokey is entirely too scrupulous and too crippled by the deaths of his parents when he was a young boy. For anyone familiar with Memphis the book has that added factor. I knew every geographical reference he made, right down to the address of his 'office,' all based on three days spent roaming the city. It isn't very big, really, and it has a relatively small number of important sites. When he mentioned the Peabody Hotel, he even glanced off the topic of the ducks (that can be looked up). Geography and history figure strongly in the book's appeal.
More of a procedural than a real mystery, and heavily into the weekend Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed, the story, with a love angle that never feels right, is interesting enough to carry one through with pleasurable feelings, if some dark thoughts.

This was a really strong read. After a certain point, I was so immersed that I could not go to bed without finishing. It was emotionally heavy and you felt like you were there. I was really impressed by this book and want to read more of the series.

A capa da edição brasileira "trai" um pouco o leitor, passando a ideia que será um suspense/thriller "on the road".



Na verdade a "estrada perigosa" a que o título da obra se refere é um trecho de uma citação de Martin Luther King. Portanto a capa da edição americana ficou mais adequada.



Se você espera encontrar um suspense denso, ficará frustrado como eu fiquei.
Se trata mais de um "drama histórico", com um mistério no meio.

Não que seja uma história ruim. Longe disso. É bem escrita e os personagens são bem desenvolvidos.

Uma coisa que deixou a desejar foi a tradução da Landscape. Poderia ser melhor.
Em alguns trechos, não são muitos, chega a confundir e atrapalhar o entendimento do que está sendo dito/descrito.

Se você curte um drama histórico, eis aí o que acredito ser um prato cheio.

I liked it. It was tight well constructed to the main characters and a bit of an emotional ride. Still it is a very easy read.
I was not sure how I would handle the history mix, I've never been a fan of historical fiction, but it was alright.

It has an element I've noticed in a couple other good easy to read books.

It is set in a small area, Memphis but mostly around Beale St. This cuts out writing a lot of scenery detail to focus on character. The good mystery series of “Flavia de Luce” does this very well too. Both are set in the past, early 50's for Flavia and late 60's for Smokey, and both revolve around a small area.

Well written, thought provoking book

Having been raised in a small town in the South in the 1950s where blacks werr never seen on the streets, I found this book to be very eye-opening as to the black persons perspective of desegregation and particularly the death of Dr. King and how it was carried out. I liked the main character, Smokey, and found him to be a good man. The writing is so good that you feel like you are a part of him and share his experiences. I'll definitely be reading more in this series. If you want a good dose of history from a different perspective in a fictionalized format,I can't recommend this book highly enough.

This is an absolutely wonderful and compelling book. It is more of an historical fiction than a mystery. I grew up around Atlanta and was 18 when Dr. King was shot. I remember all the events and fear, and the perspective this author gives just opens up my mind. The characterization is incredible. The issues are believable and probably too realistic. I have wondered what our world would have been like if Dr. King had lived. We are still dealing w/ the complex issues today that are presented so poignantly in this book. My hat is off to Ms. Nelscott for writing this book. I plan to read her others in the series.

Set in Memphis in the weeks leading up to the assassination of Martin Luther King, we join Smokey Dalton as he juggles two distractions from the complexities of racial tension: a woman trying to understand a legacy, and a boy in a dangerous state of neglect.

Although Nelscott is not a POC (this is a pen name of Kristine Kathryn Rusch), she treats the setting with gravity and depth, and I found this a thoroughly engrossing piece to listen to. The narrator is also excellent. Planning to pick up another in this series next time I'm in the mood for a private detective.

The mystery is only part of the story. Smokey is a African American PI. He is paid to find out why a white woman's mother bequeathed him money. The story is smack in the middle of the civil rights movement. Smokey just wants people to work together while his friends and acquaintances are dissatisfied and impatient with MLK tactics. MLK plays a small part in this book.

An excellent read. I haven't read any of this author's Smokey Dalton books, but, as usual, she doesn't disappoint. Do yourself a favor and pick up any of Kristine Kathryn Rusch's (AKA Kris Nelscott) books. She is a fantastic writer who knows how to tell a story.

Set in Memphis in 1968, the book begins with Smokey on the run with a child, driving cross country, having something vaguely to do with the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. he rest of the book backs up to earlier that year, and explains how Smokey got there.

Smokey is an off the books detective (meaning, no license) who does "odd jobs" for people, largely from Montgomery's Black community. One day a white woman, from obvious wealth, stops into his office and hires him to find out how her parents--who left Smokey a small bequest in their will--knew him. He is intrigued, as ten years earlier, he received a similar anonymous gift, and has never been able to determine its source.

Needless to say, this simple job become incredibly complicated as both he and his client learn more and more about themselves. At the same time, a parallel story developes. Smokey has taken a young man under his protection, as his mother disappeared (as she has done repeatedly over the years). This time, the abandonment appears permanent, and the kid's brother is becoming involved with drug dealers and political radicals.

Side note and minor spoiler: the Black Panthers are painted as horrible, playing up all the propaganda about naive armed revolution, with no hint of the survival programs and community organizing efforts of the Panthers--the saving grace is that he hints that they may not be "real" Panthers at all.

Added to this already complex mix is the Memphis garbage strike, rising protests, and the appearance of Martin Luther King in support of the strikers. As if he doesn't have anything else to do, Smokey also is tasked with providing the local eyes and ears for King's security team.

This all makes for an explosive mixture of the personal and political, wrapped around a fascinating mystery--how did Smokey know his benefactors?

Nelscott writes superbly, with interesting language, and lots of plot tension. Very well done and highly recommended.

This is one of the very few books that move me to give the highest rating — 5 stars — to a book. Kris Nelscott (pen name of Kristine Kathryn Rusch, used for the "Smokey Dalton" series of books) has crafted a book that missing all the errors, mistakes, and shortcomings of most modern novelists, and it seems prevalently those who write in the crime/drama genre. (Though perhaps I reveal my limited appetite… ).

Nevertheless I rejoice that this otherwise well-written book is also written by an author with a robust vocabulary, able to describe action and activity, emotions, senarios, and settings in clear, engaging, and grammatically-correct prose.

Do not let that cause you to overlook the nature of this book: it is crime noir in the class of Raymond Chandler; Dashiell Hammett; Walter Mosley; Lee Child; and Michael Connelly. Nelscott has created a protagonist who is damaged yet generous, and who excels at serving as a paladin, particularly for those more broken, or those knights of gallantry who are confronted with invincible opponents. Shades of Easy Rawlins!

While Nelscott has crafted a wonderful book — and no doubt the subsequent books will be equal or better, there is much that could be done in several areas to improve the book. One such area is developing the part of an investigation where information of a decades-old crime is uncovered. Nescott allows the protagonist to acquire specific details without taking the reader through the details. Such glosses occasionally occur, yet seldom interfere with the momentum — except in the one just mentioned.

Le livre s'ouvre sur Smokey, jeune garcon d'Atlanta qui, en décembre 1939, regarde le cast de Autant en Emporte le Vent défiler sur la rue principale, une scène qui vaut son pesant de Clark Gable.

Tout dans cette histoire m'a fait embarquer à fond. Le contexte historique de la lutte pour les droits civiques et Martin Luther King, Memphis et la grève des éboueurs de Memphis en 1968.

Evidemment nous les lecteurs, on devine que quelque chose de sinistre va arriver, mais l'intrigue suit un détective privé au grand coeur, Smokey, qui doit fouiller son passé traumatisant à Atlanta, lequel pourrait être lié à celui de sa cliente, Laura, une jeune femme blanche, tout en s'occupant d'un enfant négligé, pendant que tournent d'inquiétants personnages, des casseurs, des provocateurs qui sèment la violence pour discréditer les grévistes...

Je ne donne pas de détails, sinon que les circonstances troublantes de l'assassinat de King sont ramenées à la mémoire. Étonnant les complicités, la police qui ferme les yeux. Et les stations de TV qui donnent le numéro de la chambre de Martin Luther King au motel Lorraine? Et son équipe de sécurité qui se volatilise au dernier moment? Et... Ça donne envie de relire sur cet événement.

Le détails historiques sont tels que je lis avec Google Earth pour les noms des rues, et le motel en question, devenu une partie du Musée des Droits Civiques.

When you sit down to read a mystery novel, you hope to be surprised with what you find. Certain mysteries are too predictable from the onset and others leave you disappointed because it just falls apart.

This is definitely in the happy surprise category.

In the backdrop of a historical Memphis, right up to the execution of Martin Luther King Jr., we have an African-American P.I., Smokey Dalton, taking a case from a young white Laura Hathaway.

Right away, Nelscott (pen name of Kristine Kathryn Rusch), sucks you into the world. Her ability to grip the reader and keep them stuck to the page is spectacular.

You actually feel that you are in Memphis during the time and working alongside Dalton as he takes this case presented to him. Then, once you're locked in, the surprises start popping up.

I don't just mean the final reveal (although that was good too), but just where this book goes seems unconventional for a mystery and it works so well. If I had to take a guess, it would be there's a real story-line woven in here.

You're hooked to the story and stay for the mystery.

After reading many budding authors, some great and some with great potential, it's always a pleasure to come back to someone who is a master at her craft. Couldn't recommend this enough.

This a historical mystery set in Memphis in 1968. Smokey Dalton is a black unlicensed PI who works largely for the black community. Now in his early 40’s, Smokey seems to have come to terms with the traumatic experience of his childhood — his parents were lynched when he was 10 years old. He was raised by foster parents and the story of the lynching was always a secret not shared with him.

Smokey sang in the same choir as young (Dr.) Martin Luther King, so they go way back. Dr. King comes to Memphis to support the sanitation workers who were on strike. (I had forgotten that little piece of history.) Everyone knows what happened to MLK, Jr in Memphis on April 4, 1968.

The mystery part in this novel is not related to the historical events that happened then, but they make a good backdrop. This is a series, seven of them, I believe, written by a white woman author. Per Goodreads reviews, this series is not well known, but I enjoyed it. The next book is set during the 1968 Chicago Democratic convention. My interest is piqued.

A read for the ages, especially if you are aged.

Memories, nothing can be more uplifting or depressing. A Dangerous Road was full of both for me as a senior who lived through most of the time frame of this marvelous tale. No, I have to say story because it is more historical fiction than a tale. The author does such a terrific job of melding the facts with the fiction that readers familiar with the times will think they know what may happen next. In fact, many times I expected a significant event in our nation's history to affect the story. It did, but not on the numerous times I thought it would. As you thoroughly enjoy this book you may come across several of these moments yourself. This novel is a mystery. Ah, but such a mystery and much much more, including the in those times forbidden, hidden love story. I am not a fan of sequels or serials, but this is, I promise myself the last time I will be ordering one.

Wonderful book!

What a great historical mystery! Interwoven into the days that led up to MLK’s assassination we have the story of Smokey Dalton who is a private investigator who lives in Memphis. He takes on the case of a white woman named Laura, and whose family has bequeathed 10K to Smokey. She hires Smokey to figure out why her family has left him this money. We see how Smokey and Laura‘s pasts are intertwined and that their stories will eventually lead them to a shared past that is painful.

Smokey is also involved with trying to help a young boy, Jimmy, who is out on his own BC his brother is getting into a lot of illegal activities and his mother flits in and out of his life. Jimmy and Smokey and Laura’s stories all connect and come full circle.

The book is really well written with wonderfully developed characters and an exciting plot. I will definitely go on to read the next book in the series.

This was an interesting read. It is 1967 and Memphis is overcome with the civil rights. A black detective is given $10,000 by an anonymous donor. Seven years later another anonymous donor wants to give him $10,000 more. He is hired by a wealthy Chicago white woman to get to the bottom of this as it is her mother's will that gives him the second $10,000.

The other story going on is two young brothers who Stormy (the black detective) feels a responsibility toward. The older boy is involved with the Black Panther movement and the younger is taken advantage by delivering drugs for them.

All of this goes on while Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. comes to Memphis. The descriptions of the riots is enthralling.

I would highly recommend this book to those who love history and a good mystery

Me ha llamado mucho la atención la fijación de la autora (¿o de Smokey?) por el vestuario de la mujer blanca. Si no me equivoco, esa obsesión no se repite con ningún otro personaje. Habría estado bien leer una descripción de la ropa de Martin Luther King, por ejemplo.
Sarcasmos aparte, no soy bilingüe e igual me estoy columpiando, pero el lenguaje me ha parecido demasiado simple y pobre hasta para una novela palomitera.
Se salva por el misterio, que tampoco es para tirar cohetes, y por el contexto histórico, que es lo mejor. Me deja la sensación de ser una novela mucho más antigua de lo que es. Rancia. Y me sorprende lo mucho que gusta... hoy, con toda la complejidad que hay por ahí suelta.
Casi todo autor se merece una segunda oportunidad.

After reading book 6, I had to find the rest of the series. I really love this story. It's a mix of mystery and historical fiction. And because it is somewhat recent history, I remember bits and pieces of it. It also inspired me to do more research on the 1960's. I knew what was coming only because I read book 6, but it was still a good mystery. I enjoyed it so much, I started book 2 right away, and am now on book 3 even before evaluating the 2nd book. I think I'll be through this series very quickly if they continue to be as interesting.
