She is the first to hold her children, then holds them accountable for their actions. She teaches her children to walk, then watches them walk down the aisle. She shields her children from nightmares, then encourages them to chase their dreams. “She” is a mother, and now there is a book written especially for and about her.
Chicken Soup for the Mother’s Soul pays tribute to motherhood—the universal calling that requires the skills of a master mediator, mentor, cook and counselor. These heartwarming stories celebrate the defining moments of motherhood from the triumphant to the trivial: from giving birth to developing a mother’s intuition, from making special memories and surviving family life to letting go. Whether you are an expectant mother, a grandmother or you appreciate the maternal influence in your life, you will laugh, cry and reflect upon the joys and difficulties of being a mom.
From stories about moms-next-door to celebrity contributions from Barbara Bush, Reba McEntire, Joan Rivers and Erma Bombeck, the book relates shining examples of maternal love that are cherished forever in the hearts and lives of the people they touched.
This book was perfect for the brief moments I have while working or sitting in the van waiting for a kid. It was the perfect palate cleanser after finishing a disturbing book because it was light and not intense.
As a personal preference, the chapter about "miracles" was a little much for me but I'm not going to knock the stories in them.
You can't go wrong reading a chicken soup book... Every story in them is heartwarmin and soul lifting... When your having a hard ay with your kids lock yourself in your room for 10 minutes let them rampage and read a short story. you'll walk our with more patience than you can imagine.
There are some great, heartwarming stories but there are also stories which are heavy on God and religion so if that isn't your jam (like me), there are some to skip over.
If anyone reads these reviews, they might think I'm lying. How did I finish this book a day after Rainbow Valley? Truth is, this book has sat on my bedside table for some time. I'd read a few stories before bed (except the two about dying I skipped) and go to sleep feeling touched and sometimes amazed. I highly recommend the readers of the review doing the same. PS The beginning date is totally a mystery.
Like others Chicken Soup, this book inspire me. It scared me as well, when I found that being mother was not as easy as what people say. My mum always says that it was easy to be a good mother as long as you have love (I Corinthians 13: 4-8). But, I know through this book, my mum didn't lie at all, but she forgot to tell me how hard it is to keep the love within.
