So this is actually a reread for me and it is SHOCKING how much I disliked this compared to the first time I read it. Bare in mind the first time I read it was four or five years ago and I was just getting into shoujo romance, so my experience pool was shallow. At this point this series really doesn't compare to other shoujo romance, reverse harems or otherwise. I can't say that it's bad, but the story is uninteresting, the characters are fine but not really engaging, and the artwork/art style is SUPER FUCKING DISTRACTING. What I mean is there's so much crammed into each panel that it's kind of hard to keep your eyes on one specific thing, not to mention the lines are drawn thick and dark, which combined with the cramped space makes the visuals an eyesore rather than eye candy.

I was originally intending to reread the entire series since it's only nine volumes long, but I'm not going to bother. I already know this is going to be an average series that I'll unhaul once I'm done, so I'm gonna spare myself the headache and drop the series here. Not a bad series, mind you, but not up to my new standards. Read it if you want, it's a good beginner's manga to reverse harems, but it's not for me.

I really love the artwork for this manga, it's just so adorable. Which is probably why I chose to read it; I tend to lean towards pretty mangas when choosing which ones to read (shameful I know!) The storyline is slightly confusing, particularly her father's involvement, the purpose of the choker and what exactly her punishment is but it doesn't deter from the reading experience and I'm hoping it will be elaborated on in the next volume which I will be starting shortly. There are very funny bits too which is a bonus.

This was strangely compelling????

The characters all are pretty dorky and I’ve seen nearly all of them before but the story was kind of good.

The art style was very.... dark. Literally. I think everything is just too packed into one page. It makes it hard to read.

It’s pretty funny at times. Sometimes without meaning to be. Kaede is probably my favorite character.

I made my friend read through this one, which they barely made it through. They said it was like Yu-Gi-Oh! but with kisses and boys instead. (She kisses the card then poof! The summoning spell works.)

Partly from my Amazon review, bought at Rightstuf:
WOW! I was blown away. Anise just can't remove this annoying choker that is the cause of the school administrator chasing her every morning because it violates the dress code. We are quickly shown 4 hot guys at her school, that later become her Rose Knights. When a bat-like creature swoops down from the sky and hits her, her choker falls off and is nowhere to be found. With her father suddenly coming home, what is going to happen to her since she lost it? What "terrible punishment" will befall her?

Tenjo, the class president and White Rose Knight, is who Anise idolizes and likes, and Kaede, the Red Rose Knight seems to like her, but teases her and we can't be entirely sure of his feelings. Comedy was thrown in perfectly, and enough mystery shrouded Anise's father and her situation to keep me interested. My favorite of the Knights so far, is Kurama, the Black Rose Knight:D

2 full glossy color pages are what you will open this manga to, and they are beautiful. The art is simply gorgeous! Reminded me of CLAMP's Tsubasa, except not elongated like they usually are known for. This is nothing new for shoujo, but I thoroughly enjoyed it:) Something that did surprise me, was that in order for Anise to use her Knights, they get their power from her blood. There's no vampire stuff going on, we don't see how her blood is taken by them, but it did shock me when everything before was light and fluffy. Mention of some Demon Lord is thrown in and immediately made fun of. I love how this series makes fun of itself, so if you liked Ouran, you will like this!

This volume mostly introduced each Knight and their interactions with Anise and the others. Once again, the missing parents trope is strong with this series, but her dad is coming back! Not so certain that's a good thing though, because he means to "punish" her for losing her necklace. And he had this creeper face when he said it...

Guys, at the end, there was an ad for Kamisama Kiss!! OMG! XD It says "Now a hit anime series!" My life, you guys, is complete with that! If you haven't read it, check it out now! And Kiss of the Rose Princess because I really enjoyed it!

Do I recommend this? YES. If you enjoyed any of these titles-regardless of their similarity to the story- you most likely will love Kiss of the Rose Princess:

Kamisama Kiss, Vampire Knight (the first few volumes only because this series went downhill) Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura, Tsubasa R. C, Pandora Hearts, Alice in the Country of (any of these volumes) and maybe even Ouran Highschool Hostclub.

Great, fun experience and I look forward to volume 2, which I will be pre-ordering right now from Rightstuf;)
Which Knight will you choose?

This was one book I was seriously disappointed in. I love all things fantasy and romance, and love shoujo manga. It seemed like a book I'd love. It has all of those in it, and a great cover to boot. The synopsis made it sound like something I'd love, and would probably be the next series I collect.
Well, I'm not. And I don't love it. I barely even liked it.
The book starts out alright--the first chapter serves as an introduction to Anise's world, and introduces her knights. It's perfectly fine, as far as first chapters go.
The rest of the book was a big let down, though. While it did continue from chapter to chapter (the characters do have to keep trying to locate Anise's choker), but it felt way too episodic for me. Each of the subsequent chapters features one of the guys as the focus, and to be honest, I just couldn't get into those chapters. Chapters that were supposed to develop those characters just revealed how the manga is full of stock characters, and that there would be some issue of the day in every chapter from then on. I don't think I want to read 8 more volumes of episodic chapters that have one small thread connecting them. Maybe it gets better in book two, but when a book is just almost a bunch of short stories with boring characters (though Anise herself isn't bad, but I know I'd have to put up with the knights, and I can guess who her love interest is from the start. I hate those kinds of stories. D:), and we get no answer regarding why the choker is so important in the first book, I'm not interested anymore. Maybe I'd continue it if the library around here gets it, but as it stands, I don't want to finish buying it. It's not worth it to me.

Other things to take into consideration:
The art doesn't look nearly as nice in the book as it does on the cover. Anise is pretty much drawn as she is on the cover, but the boys are generally drawn with strangely shaped faces and lanky proportions. And like another review said, it is hard to tell what's going on sometimes.

Just avoid this if you like fantasy and/or romance manga. There are much better titles out there, and Viz does publish some of them, so the prices are about the same.

This is easily going to be a new addiction for me! My attention was stolen from the first page and I'm anxiously trying to get my hands on the next installment. Also, maybe I read too much reverse harem because I want her to be with all of them. Especially the black rose!

Anise wears a rose choker she was told to never remove lest a horrible fate befall her. When it goes flying, she ends up in command of a cadre of pretty boys who she summons by kissing a card. Despite an offhand comment about a demon lord, it sure seems like this is mostly an excuse for goofing around.

Some books are so obvious that they are a chore to read and slog to endure. Then there’s a book like this, which is still fairly obvious, that takes a weird premise and just runs with it, pinwheeling between the zaniest nonsense the author can conjure up.

The high drama in this volume largely surrounds the school festival, which is so brutally sidelined outside of the opening and closing that it almost feels like it was an intentional slight against that time-honoured tradition.

The overall arc of things is no shocker - Anise and Kaede, one of her knights, fight so much that they are clearly destined for one another (his save during the festival after party is emblematic of the fun this book is having). Their dynamic is pretty cute - I don’t mind a squabbling couple like this if it’s done well and they have some actual chemistry brewing.

The rest of the knights fit various stereotypes of brooding smoulderball, sickly-young boy, and the implausibly perfect school president. I do like the work making them a bit more than strictly obvious stereotypes (the president’s true nature is... something else). These are a fun bunch to spend time with and that counts for a lot.

It’s pretty funny too. The book takes the mickey out of its own tropes and scenarios more often than not - the one dangerous moment is largely predicated on somebody having a hissy fit. Normally this would annoy me, but the sheer exuberance of this book just carries it along. The reason why the youngest knight is so sickly really made me laugh.

It isn’t easy to explain why this book works, but it is definitely down to the energy. There’s minimal downtime and a lot of antics constantly running in the foreground and background. Sometimes a book feels like a dour exercise in Art, but this one feels like the author was having an absolute blast the whole way through and it really brings the whole thing to life.

The art is messy as heck, especially in the beginning, but it mostly gets the point across. It improves towards the end, so don’t despair if the first couple chapters feel disjointed and hard to follow (and I like the art moment to moment, it’s really the layouts). It soon moves on to reverse harems and near-miss kissing and all that other stuff.

3 stars. This occupies the same “genre” of A Springtime With Ninjas - enjoyable fluff that kind of knows how silly it is and leans into it. You’ll never remember this as one of the greats, but you’ll probably have fun reading it. Definitely worth a second volume.

This was a cute, romantic urban fantasy manga! It centered around Anise Yamamoto who loses her rose choker one day only to find out she's the rose princess. That same day she learns she can summon four knights by the kiss of a card. I liked the stories in each chapter, but it felt like some of the characters were a bit flat and overall plots for each chapter were a bit silly. Anise had a tendency to send the knights on frivolous or personal errands, but I guess it is meant to be more young adult manga. I just wish there was any sort of villain in this manga.

As usual, this review covers the entire series and will contain spoilers as I speak at length about the series' plot, themes, characters, etc.

For the most part, my issues with this manga lie in two areas.

1) The author/artist made all the pages so cluttered and busy. It was hard to follow the story and understand what was happening because it was visually a mess almost constantly.

Words and images get lost because they're done in excess on every page. Important bits of dialogue get placed in a tiny text next to less-important drawings. Then major panels themselves get drowned out with all this black and white being scribbled on top of itself; the author didn't use tones effectively, nor was there a worthwhile contrast balance.

It seems super basic that legibility and flow would be the first things a comic artist would master, but Aya Shouoto seems to think that overwhelming reader's eyes with lots of flowers and frills will make her work seem better. I guess the idea was to confuse their sight so much they can't see anything that well and then presume it was pretty? I'm not totally sure, but this work definitely suffers from how the author chose to lay things out and present them in a monotone format.

2) The story telling and plot both have a lot of problems.

I suppose it was an attempt to seem "mysterious" but there's very little about the world truly explained, especially early on, and the plot is full of holes and conflicting elements because there's a greater focus on being mysterious and having Anis get into somewhat comedic moments with her knights at school than on focusing on any worthwhile plot or even character exploration.

The general premise is that there's a seal holding back "the devil" and a "domina" with "rhode knights" exists to help... maintain it... or... something?? Like, not even that basic premise is well explained. We know a dominia from the past created the seal, so... dominas don't exist just to handle keeping demons/devils at bay, they had to have been created for some purpose prior to sealing away the devil, but, what that purpose is remains a mystery to me.

The conflicts are elementary, repetitive, contrived, and don't do much for me because every bad guy is there like "I want to break the seal to take the devil's power for myself" without even expressing what use that power might hold for them.

Desires and goals are shoddy, often non-existent or quickly abandoned, characters are easily talked out of things and have odd shifts in personality, the backgrounds are odd, and sometimes things about the character are treated as normal when in fact they're abnormal (like Tenjou being the head of a church; like... I didn't realize "teen cult leader" was a... normal... thing...)

And of course we have the usual "please stop, Japan" moments like the one guy going "we're sexual-harassment buddies" to Anis, playing up sexual assault like it's no big deal and the weirdly possessive/controlling/dominating/abusive type of romantic behavior that's considered attractive.

It's not as bad as it has been in other books, but the constant "make the domina mine" talk with all this "binding" talk definitely plays into the sort of atmosphere that it's supposed to be this sexy possessive thing and I don't like it, especially since the concepts of freewill and what not aren't really explored in this. There's no introspection into the domina and knight relationship or the nature of the contracts or how freewill fits in. It's just kinda accepted and they continue like it's nothing.

Also, the ending was just... so rushed and unfinished.

Overall, the writing and world building and plot and development are all really lacking. Usually even poor writing can sometimes not be the final nail in the coffin if the art is really nice or the ideas were interesting enough, but with this having both cluttered, chaotic art panels in a style that frankly needs improvement on top of really terrible writing... well, it's a manga that isn't much affected by anything besides these low-brow qualities.

In general, the author is know for exaggerated shoujo stories with lots of magic and roses and cheesiness super-glued around a terribly developed plot that throws around a lot of mysterious ideas with some sort of "find a thing" plot, so in general her style and plots just really aren't to my taste. I think she could have done something really cool if she'd devoted more time to plot development and writing, rather than trying to just make something fan servicing with hot boys and words like "binding" and "command" and "rose" thrown in on most pages after drowning it in roses and frills.

I traded for physical copies of the first 2 volumes of this a few weeks ago. (This just reminds me how far I am on review eBooks! Having tablet troubles the last few months, so yeah.)

********************

I have read the first 2 Volumes, so I will be reviewing those 2 together here. I have been really enjoying this series thus far.

I do think the *White Rose* President Tenjou takes things too far - especially talking like he belongs in an erotica novel - but, I still feel like he has the best intentions at heart. I just really don't want Anise to end up with him.

I don't want Anise to end up with the *Yellow Rose* Haruto, either, though I can imagine the mangaka taking it there, since friends-into-lovers stories are popular. However, no matter how good of friends they were in the past, it does NOT excuse his actions now.

I really like the *Red Rose* Kaede. I know that he and Anise had a rough start. But, I get the feeling that he really likes her and has wanted to admit it to her a couple of times.

I feel bad for the *Blue Rose* Seiren, who has an allergy to roses, even though he is a Rose Knight. I also hate what he was designed to do and how they deceived Kaede by making him feel as though he really knew Seiren's past.

I also really like the *Black Rose* Mutsumi. (I am perhaps drawn to him, since Black Roses are my favorite flowers.) He seems a bit drawn into his shell at times. (Perhaps, he is a Cancerian? That would make sense.) But, he seems to really cherish Anise, anyways. He just isn't that trusting at first. He, however, seems to be opening up to her better, though, and protecting her well.

This series definitely keeps me interested and has me wanting to read more.

Despite being cliché to the extreme, I still like it the same way I liked Shugo Chara! I don't know; I suppose that beneath all my attitude and sullenness, I have a girly side that's attracted to romance, bishies, and power to dominate bishies? Wait. Power to dominate people, even though it's bishies, doesn't seem very girly...

Anise, the heroine of the story, is tired of having to wear the strange collar her father gave her many years before with a warning that if she ever removes it, she will fall into despair. Even so she wants to remove it but couldn't and stopped trying in fear of her father's wrath. But one day she hit some unidentified creature and lost the collar. That's right, she lost it.

And gained powers in the process.

She's apparently the Rose Princess and the collar has been holding back her power for years. She also has knights, four hot bishies, at her command. Which is good, despite the fact one of her knights, the one she's had a crush on for years, turned out to be not the kind of prince she envisioned. So why did her father force her to wear it and if his warning is true, what kind of troubles will befall her to drive her to despair?

Fun, beautifully drawn and easy going.
That's what I think of this.

When I first met Anis Yamamoto I thought she was dull and boring, but as soon as the introduction was over she grew. Now I like her quite a bit.
Even if the beginning was kind of cliché I like how the story turned out with the Knights. They've all have their different personalities and you can still love all of them.
What's going on with her father on the other hand, that I'd like to know.

I have never been so baffled before by a manga😂 This was so fast-paced and you were just thrown into it alongside our main character Anise. I literally picked this up because it was a newly added manga to my library and I thought, "oh, I need to read it since it's new."

This is an urban fantasy shoujo with a Victorian flair. I loved each of our knights, except for the white rose. As it was stated numerous times, he is a freak. This manga is so self-aware and I loved it. The art was gorgeous and the plot was enough for me to keep going. The writing style is a bunch of fun and there are a bunch of under the breath comments from our group of characters.

I will continue on with this random little series because it is so...I do not know how to explain it! It is an intriguing group of characters with a plot that, hopefully, will dive deeper into the lore.

Also, can I please be friends with the author? She sounds so chill and like a lot of fun!

edit: I knew this art style gave me The Demon Prince of Momochi House, Vol. 1 vibes! Now, I know why. Oh, I might need to go start that series while I search for the rest of the volumes in this series.

reasons why i could be a great shoujo heroine:

- sangfroid. it takes a certain coolness of character to be able to accept knights vowing to serve you out of nowhere and i like to believe i would 1000% be up to the task. after all, it's quite rude to refuse that which is your due

- i am not allergic to roses. i'm not saying you couldn't be a shoujo heroine with a rose allergy -- seiran seems to be doing well enough as harem interest #4 -- but i rather think it would make the job more difficult

- i...can wear jewelry? look, let me have this okay, i thought i could come up with three reasons and it was harder than i thought

reasons why i could never be a shoujo heroine

- you know that moment where the ~cool~ student council president reveals himself to be an overly dramatic submissive with distinct similarities to tamaki suoh and the heroine is disappointed and dismisses him as love interest material? i'm not saying i'd date him but i will say that is exactly the moment where i thought 'hmm, yes, alright then, i can work with this. i am totally okay with having a dude willing to obey my every whim! :D'

- i...am pretty sure i would not be able to look at the undercover vampire harem option #3 without laughing and i don't think he would appreciate that. u_u alas, i do lack the inherent tact of the shoujo heroine soul

- i was going to try to go for gold and riff off harem interest # 4 but i can't lie, i actually think i'd react pretty much the same as anis. there's a possibility i'd go into embarassing aunt cheek pinching mode so let's count that as half a reason

(re: haru, idk man, he's too standard for me to have anything to say yet. alas, this may be the kind of shoujo where the end game love interest is signalled by way of having no interesting personality to speak of)

so yeah this is totally junk shoujo and i plan to read and enjoy it anyways. maybe next volume we'll get a jealous girl who's won over by anis' kindness and joins the cast as the 'more willing to be mean for the cause' bff! 2.5 stars
