This is the third book that I read as a new believer and it really helped me learn scripture. This was of great value as I was in college and in a program hostile to Christianity, so I felt I needed to be prepared to defend what I believe. Essential Christianity is a book on essential christian doctrine. That is, the primary doctrines that all Christians must believe such as the Trinity, the Authority and Inerrancy of the Bible, the Deity of Christ, the Resurrection, salvation by grace through faith, the Virgin birth and so on. It does not cover non-essential doctrines such as types of baptism, types of ecclesiology or the variety of views on eschatology. The book has a lot of scripture to validate every major doctrine. I would encourage you to look up every passage of scripture, this will help you get grounded in Christian doctrine. I think this would be a great book for discipleship, especially new believers who need to get grounded in true doctrine and move from milk to solid food. It is a small book, but jam packed with biblical knowledge which will be valuable in your growth. Author, Walter Martin, also wrote Kingdom of the Cults which dives into the doctrines and history of many non-Christian religions which has sprang up over the last 150 years. Knowing essential Christian doctrine will prepare you to recognize false doctrine and evangelize those trapped in non-Christian cults. If you like this, then I would also recommend 'Know the Truth' by Bruce Milne which is similar in content, but more exhaustive in doctrine.
