Unfinished Witchness

Everything's coming up Emma...

Since Emma inherited her grandfather's hearth magic, chores have never been so much fun. Her house is sparkling clean, dishes wash themselves, and her pancakes... Well, she’s a witch, not a miracle worker. Emma's new mansion would make a perfect bed-and-breakfast, if she only she could deliver on that second "B". It’s time to hire someone who can prepare a meal without burning the place down. The problems start when one applicant for the cook job turns up dead and the obvious culprit would be the other. But Emma can’t quite bring herself to believe this sweet, gentle woman would resort to murder for a job.

To make matters worse, Emma’s new home is haunted. Her ghostly grandfather knows exactly who killed the chef, but after thirty years alone, he’s a bit peeved she never came to visit. Unless she can help him settle his unfinished business, he’s not telling. Can Emma fix her grandfather’s broken heart, save her staff, and find the real killer?

UNFINISHED WITCHNESS is the highly-anticipated first book in the upcoming HAUNTED HAVEN series, a paranormal cozy mystery series with an amateur sleuth, a small town, and a talking cat. Fans of Angie Fox, Amy Boyles, and Annabel Chase will love these bewitching books.

Ada Bell knew you'd be reading this. Okay, well, she knew someone would be. (Hi, Mom!) That's pretty much the extent of her psychic powers. A life-long mystery buff, Ada has devoured everything from Murder, She Wrote to Nancy Drew to Psych!, so she was pretty much destined to end up here. Ada loves Scooby Doo, superhero movies, STEM heroines, and cake. Mmm, cake.

Lucky Emma has inherited her grandfather's mansion, his fortune, his witchiness, his talking cat, and his ghost. A lot to cope with all at once especially when Emma is trying to establish a bed and breakfast business in the inherited mansion, but finds major opposition from another established business in the town. When her new chef is found dead in the B&B kitchen Emma feels obliged to investigate.

This is a fun read with a number of interesting characters and an intriguing mystery. I always enjoy a resident ghost and Pink, the talking cat is a treasure. Lots of entertaining dialogue and the promise of more to come makes this an excellent first book in the series.

I’ve received an e-ARC for Unfinished Witchness by Ada Bell from Booksirens in return for an honest review. This review and my opinions in it are mine, and mine alone.

Unfinished Witchness is book nr 1 in the Haunted Haven series and is a cozy murder mystery. It has a paranormal vibe, it is witchy, and it has a cat! It is perfect for Spooky season!

Emma inherits her grandfather's mansion, his hearth magic - which makes her a witch, and his fortune, oh, and a talking cat.
Emma moves into the mansion that is now hers and she decides to make it into a B&B. She quickly discovers that her grandfather, who passed away 30 years earlier, never left, and lives in the mansion as a ghost. He couldn't leave, and was all alone, all that time.
To really make the perfect B&B, Emma must have someone who can prepare the breakfast meals for her without burning the place down. Very soon Emma finds a great chef, and all goes well, until her new chef turns up dead and the police shuts Emma’s B&B down, even before she could have had her first guest come in.
Emma decides to investigate this herself. She has magic, a talking cat ánd her ghostly grandfather at her side, solving the murder should be easy! Or should it? Her grandfather cannot leave the mansion, the cat isn’t as helpful as you would think, and somehow the local police don’t appreciate it if Emma goes out to investigate and assist.
Can she find the murderer or will she be forced to start over yet again?

This book is everything I want in a cozy, witchy, murder mystery! It’s haunted, it’s witchy, it has a cynical cat as a familiar who is really funny. Her grandfather is hysterical, the antagonist is very surprising (did not see that coming for a long time) and the tertiary characters are all written perfectly to complete the story very well!
I love Emma, and how she is so generous. It really shows how big her heart really is.

This series starter is perfect and I can’t wait to read book nr. 2!

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

I was excited to start this new series by Ada Bell that follows Emma. We already met Emma briefly in the Shady Grove series and I was looking forward to read more about her. Emma has inherited a large house from her grandfather as well as his magic, she's turning the house into a B&B, but runs into trouble when her newly hired cook gets murdered.

This was a great start to this new series, I liked getting to know Emma and seeing her interact with her grandfather as ghost and her cat Pink. I liked Emma as a main character and seeing how this inheritance changed her life. It also was fun to read about the house she inherited and the magic. There's plenty of instances of her using magic and I liked the magical feel it gave to the book. I liked how Emma wanted to help other people and how she want about that, how she wants to help Josie even though they don't know each other well and how she keeps doing that even when Josie turns into the main suspect. She's figuring out more about her magic and how to run a business while trying to solve the mystery as well.

The mystery was a solid one. I did feel like there weren't as many clues and suspects. There also wasn't as much investigating or progress at some points, but it still kept me reading. I struggled to figure out who did it as no one seemed right, there wasn't enough information to add new suspects and none of the suspects Emma did find quite made sense given the clues available so far. There is a great twist at the end where everything falls on it's place and it all makes sense. I really liked it, although I had wished she had solved the mystery instead of her figuring out because she hears the murderer admit it.

To summarize: This was a great start to this new series. I liked reading about Emma, her B&B and how she got invested in the murder mystery. I liked seeing Emma interact with her ghostly grandfather, her cat Pink and her new employee Josie. I thought Emma was a great main character and I enjoyed reading about her as she figures out more about her magic and solves the mystery. I liked how she wants to helpful other people and goes out of her way to do so with the way she sets up her B&B. The mystery was a solid one, although I felt there weren't as many suspects and clues. It all makes sense with the reveal at the end, which was quite the interesting twist and I liked how everything fell on it's place. I look forward to the next book!

Worth the wait , from the last book of the series ,this story packs a punch . Emma is getting to know about her grandfather and finding her way about the huge mansion, her calling and her magic .Dottie the person who puts a limit on her magic allowance is making renovations difficult. She decides to open a B&B for people in need of refuge. She appoints staff only for one to be Murdered on duty , the police are near useless and so she begins a mammoth task of unpicking the threads of the case to try and solve it herself . I couldn’t put the book down and it’s such well written it flows really well

I received an ARC of this book and my review is in my own words and voluntary

Emma inherited her grandfather's house - and he still lives in it! While it's true her grandfather is a ghost, he was also a witch in his lifetime and he's been waiting a long time to help Emma navigate her new powers. Pink, the talking cat, is there for backup, leaving Emma set for her mission of running a B&B. Emma, for all her magic, cannot cook, necessitating that she hire a kitchen expert who is murdered on her first day of work. When Emma's second hire is arrested for the murder, it's time to step in and find the culprit.

This story was a playful introduction to the Haunted Haven series. All the characters were captivating; you would twitch your curtains if you lived next door. I particularly adored Pink, the snarky cat who added just the right amount of spice to the tale. The paranormal aspect was well done and not overplayed.

I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

Unfinished Witchness is the first book in the ‘Haunted Haven’ series. It stars Emma, a witch, and is told in first person from her pov.

I started reading cozy mysteries this year not knowing what to expect from them. Thanks to the Zon’s reading preview, I could read most of a first chapter of a book that I found interesting and decide if I wanted to read it or not. Most of the writing styles were the same. Rather elementary, with too much rambling monologue written in purple prose about the main character’s past, present, and of the objects and events. The character voices in most of the cozy mysteries, came across as if a teacher was narrating a story to school children, a lot of inflection and drama. Thankfully, this book was not like that. I found this story entertaining, with a lighter writing style and not overly descriptive. Emma is the obligatory, nosey heroine who is a witch that came to her powers gifted by her grandfather, Walter, after his death and her inheritance.

The blurb is mostly accurate, except for the part where Emma’s ghostly grandfather knows who killed the new chef. Walter did not. He is confined to the house, but mainly I think, to the large living/ballroom. Until Emma creates a spell where he can leave the house and travel with her, so he’s unable to see who killed the chef. The blurb should be fixed.

I enjoyed the characters and the plot. Emma is about forty, is nosey, a bit of a gossip, and overly eager to use her witch powers which tend to get her into trouble since she doesn’t know how to control them. That causes problems for her and has the Witch Council warning her and keeping an eye on her. Her cat familiar, Pink, there’s not much known about him. There’s indication that Pink was also Walter’s familiar at one point. Pink is a typical, snobby, know-it-all cat. Walter is an extrovert and is happy to finally have Emma move into the house and to have her able to see him because he’s been alone for too long. There is the character Toby, the owner of the B&B who lives nearby. He’s significant to the story, but the author left what happened to him dangling at the end of the story. He’s like a dropped character with no satisfactory conclusion.

I was confused about what happened to Walter’s wife and the daughter, who was Emma’s mother. It sounded like Walter’s ‘wife’ went back home to her ‘husband’ or family and took Emma with her. Or that Walter was Emma’s uncle and not grandfather. Walter kept saying that Emma looked exactly like her grandmother, who he adored. I’ll have to go back and re-read what the family history is about because it was confusing.

The title of the book indicates what Emma plans on doing with the home she inherited. She intends to turn it into a refuge for people, and/or ghosts, who need help in their lives to get back on their feet or have unfinished business.

Anyway, Unfinished Witchness was a fun book to read. It had an interesting plot with amusing characters. I’d read the rest of the series, and I recommend this book to cozy mystery enthusiasts. I give this 4 Stars.

I have no relatives in a position to leave me a magnificent mansion (with or without a huge amount of money) so I bought this book because reading about someone who inherits said mansion makes a great second best.

The heroine, Emma, is both likeable and relatable, with a strong sense of humour and lines like,"Everyone said they wanted a magic cat, but then the cat started talking." In fact, the cat is so sardonic Emma notes it should have been called Alanis, not Pink.

Add in intriguing characters with dark secrets and pungent personalities--including a witch or two, a rival B & B owner, and a hunky neighbour who may or may not become a potential love interest--and the book gets better and better.

Throw in a shocker of a murder and a harrassed detective who does not appreciate Emma's attempts to help solve the crime. All this mixed with magical powers that go wrong, a couple of ghosts who prove less than helpful, and that key essential ingredient for cozy mysteries--vivid descriptions of cooking and baking that glut your senses, don't add calories and are better than the best treat you've ever had at a country market.

What's at stake? Emma's secret goal for her new B & B. Bless her little heart.

All this resulted in a fast-paced, funny story that fit the parameters of a cozy paranormal mystery to a T (spiced with a dash of fantasy).

Time flew by, I couldn't put it down, and I can't wait for more Haunted Haven mysteries. This one was a feast for the senses and a real, fun treat.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was worried as the book started off a little slow and choppy - but then as I continued reading I needed to know what happened. It is a fun book to read - perfect summer reading! Walter and Pink are awesome as I believe as the series gets longer then I believe the books will get better. 5-stars because even though it was slower at the beginning - it picked up and I had to finish.

Emma isn’t perfect but thank goodness she’s not whiny. She is strong - not quite sure of herself but that’s to be expected with her situation.

For me it did wrap up pretty quickly - so I appreciated the epilogue and I believe more will be revealed in other books.

One thing I was confused about and I may be wrong, but I thought she told Josie about what she could do and that Walter was there - yet during the baseball game she didn’t explain. I might have misread but I’m pretty sure when Josie mentioned she’s a witch Emma mentioned it too.

Overall - I’m heading to book 2 because it is a fun series and storyline

"New magic, new job, new friends, new life."

Emma has inherited her grandfather's estate, along with magical abilities.Determined to use her inheritance for good, she begins working on converting the old place into a B+B. But she can't cook, so she sets out to hire one. With two applicants she interviews them both. Martha barges in and Josie is exactly the opposite. Emma offers Josie a job and a place to stay. She then hires Martha as the cook.

And finds Martha dead in the kitchen. She'd been strangled with an apron.

Then the cops arrest Josie for the murder. Of course she didn't do it and the rest of the storyline has Emma trying to find out who actually did.

I had read and reviewed the second book in the series before this one so I'd been introduced to Emma, grandfather Walter the ghost, and Pink: the snarky familiar cat. This first book filled in the blanks so to speak. Can Ada Bell keep up the good work? We're just getting started! Highly Recommended 5/5

Emma inherited her grandfather's mansion

Emma was surprised when she found out that she inherited her grandfather's mansion and his money. Her and Pink, her talking cat, moved into the mansion.
She was shocked to find out that it wasn't a house but a mansion with other buildings on the property. It needed some work.
She also didn't know that she also received magical powers with her inheritance.
She also met her grandfather, Walter, the resident ghost.
Walter is a fun spirit and is trying to teach Emma her powers. Some funny situations they get into, until Martha is murdered.
Martha is the woman Emma hired to cook for the bed and breakfast. Josie, the other woman who applied for the job as cook, was charged with murdering Martha.
Can Emma get her off? Can Emma be a sleuth and find the real killer?
Ada Bell wrote a funny and interesting story with a witch and her resident ghost with special powers. I enjoyed reading this book.

Unfinished Witchiness is the perfect cosy mystery to curl up with, offering an enchanting blend of magic, intrigue, and warm-hearted storytelling. Hearth witch Emma has big plans to turn her newly inherited mansion into a charming bed and breakfast, but those dreams come to a sudden halt when a death on the property throws everything into chaos. With the B’n’Bs newest resident accused, Emma takes it upon herself to uncover the truth, navigating a town where she’s still a newcomer, uncovering secrets and identifying plenty of possible suspects.

Thankfully, she’s not alone—Walter the ghost lends his spectral wisdom, and Pink, her mischievous talking magic cat, keeps things delightfully unpredictable. Ada Bell masterfully delivers an easy, engaging read that pulls you into Emma’s world with its wit, warmth, and suspense. A lovely way to while away a few hours, this book is a must-read for fans of paranormal mysteries/cozies!

A really nice cozy murder, with a little hint of magic and whimsy. Having inherited her late grandfathers estate and mansion, as well as his magic, Emma decides to try to follow his lead, by helping everyone she can. When her new cook is murdered she decides to help the investigation along, especially when her new friend is arrested.

A nice pace, good writing and an interesting story. We met Emma in a previous book by this author, it’s nice to see her getting her own series. The dialogue is good, the characters are shaping up nicely and I really like the cat, Pink, again with his own quirky character. There felt as there there weren’t enough clues for Emma to follow in the investigation but it’s a short read, so you can forgive that. All in all a good way to spend a few hours reading this book.

Emma inherits a mansion and not just a mansion, but a haunted mansion. It’s haunted by her grandfather. She’s also inherited witch powers and a talking cat. It’s a lot to take in. She’s struggling to learn how to use her powers. She decides to open a bed and breakfast but no sooner is it open than the police close it after a murder takes place. Now Emma, Granddad, and Pink the cat are working together to find the murderer.
I really enjoyed this book. I love the characters and it was a little different from the cozies I usually read. The addition of a lovable ghost was a nice change. Emma is a very likable character who just wants to help people. I already have book 2 and I can’t wait to start it and follow the adventures these 3 get into. Truth be told, I am a sucker for a rags-to-riches story. Throw in a witty ghost grandpa and a snarky familiar and I am in! Emma was a great main character, slightly older, hopefully wiser, and loyal to a fault.

In the beginning of the story, we learn that Emma has inherited a mansion and a sizable inheritance from her grandfather, an eccentric millionaire. Tasked with helping people, Emma opens a Bed and Breakfast to help other paranormals find their way.

When her cook is killed, on her first day of work, Emma and her Grandfather must work together to find the killer before Emma finds herself on the chopping block. This book was witty and full of heart and I can't wait to read the next installment.

I just finished reading the first book in Ada Bell’s Haunted Haven series ‘Unfinished Witchness’. The series starts off with Emma arriving at the huge house she had recently inherited along with a large fortune from a grandfather she never knew. She also had newly discovered he had magical powers that she had also inherited. Now she is preparing to turn the house into a B&B and learning how to use her newly acquired magic. That is all I am going to say about the plot.

I really enjoyed the story. Emma and her two surprising new companions are wonderful characters. The book has humorous moments as Emma learns to use magic. The mystery was good! I am now a fan of Ada Bell and this series. I immediately arranged to acquire the next two available books in the series and very much look forward to reading them.

I received an ARC of this book. My opinion is left voluntarily.

I was very pleasantly surprised as I read a lot of "cozy mysteries" about witches and their crazy lives, but I really liked the fact that the ghost of the series is Emma's grandfather. He is hilarious. The cat Pink is too funny, he is a snarky, self-absorbed typical cat that also speaks! I agree with a couple of other reviewers, the beginning was kind of choppy and slow and it did take me a little time to get into the story. I was kind of floored that Emma gets to her new home and immediately tries massive magic on the house - that was crazy!!!! I ended up really enjoying this book and look forward to the rest of the series. I need more Grandpa!

I really enjoy cozy paranormals, and I hadn’t read one for a while, so I thought I’d give this one a try. I adored Emma, and I think she is a great character, along with a couple others. I did feel in certain parts of the book that maybe there is a prequel I missed since Emma mentioned previous information like the reader knew. But that aside, I really did enjoy this book. The mystery is a good one, even if I figured it out before it was revealed. I don’t think Emma did a good job of looking for clues, but maybe as the books go on, that’ll be a different story. A well-written, enjoyable, cozy paranormal. I’m looking forward to more. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Unfinished Witchness

This is the first book in the Haunted Haven series by author Ada Bell.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and interesting. I especially liked the interactions between Emma and her ghostly grandfather and Pink the cat. I loved the way Emma was so bighearted in wanting to help lost souls.

There were so many twists, turns and red herrings, I couldn't guess who the murderer was until the very end. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Unfinished Witchness by Ada Bell is a cozy mystery that will keep you guessing and laughing through the book. I loved it! I loved the way Emma acted and everything about her. This is a character that I really enjoyed reading about. I won't talk about the plot - you can read that in the synopsis of the book. I will say that the plot and characters are well developed. You can try to figure out who committed the crime, but you will probably be wrong. I was shocked! I received a copy of this book through BookSirens.com and I always review every book that I read. I cannot wait to start the next book in the series.

I'm slow but eventually caught on

After receiving her inheritance, Emma moves to her new home. A mansion in the woods, looking for a little TLC, inhabited by the ghost of her deceased grandfather. With her familiar, she'll soon have the place cleaned up and ready for business. The one thing needed is a new cook. Emma hires Martha, an excellent chef, but a bit grumpy. When Martha is murdered, Emma's B&B dreams are put on hold while she attempts to find the killer. With the help of her grandpa and cat, she'll navigate using new spells and slowly work through who benefits the most with Martha gone.

Good start to the series.

Did not disappoint!!!

Knowing this author’s other series and reading that bubbly blurb got me so excited! And I’m happy to say that it was truly amazing!

Quote from Emma about Grandpa Walter:
“Too bad I’d never get to thank him.” Girl, you wait!

A ghost. A talking cat. A witch who is inexperienced and very enthusiastic. Love!!!

Another quote:
“Of all the things I expected when learning about my grandfather’s legacy, an excited ghost with a playful side never occurred to me. Life was about to get a lot more interesting.”

And interesting it was! So. Much. Fun!

It is enjoyable starting a journey with a new cozy murder series as all of the characters develop. This was fun to read. A sarcastic cat, fun loving Grandpa ghost and plucky main character who has many talents but cooking is not one of them...nor gardening...maybe this was based on me? Anyway, the story was a quirky cozy murder mystery with twists and turns. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

3,5 stars. This story takes place at the same time as the Shady Grove mysteries, yet there's a witch council here that's completely absent in the Shady Grove mysteries, even though there are a lot of witches in Shady Grove and it's very nearby. There are a lot of inconsistencies between the different Shady Grove books as well, so I think this is one of them; the difference wasn't explained, the council was just presented as a logical element. For me, this was distracting, which was too bad. Other than that, nice and fun story.

I would love to know I would have the rest of my life to spend in the presence of my father/grandfather or mother, etc. What a sweet idea that is. Though solving murders would not be so sweet. Emma gets that bonus time with the ghost of her grandfather and boy does it lead to some fun moments. Great mystery of who killed the chef and other neighbors selfish ideals. Lots of twists that ended up heading in the direction I had thought. I really liked this book and look forward to continuing on to book 2!

A gentle coming of age story about a 42 year old new witch and her B&B! I wish I have Hearth magic… A plot twist you wouldn't believe for the book goes from the introduction how she inherited the house , cat and magic to a sleuth/romance novel and it's end is open so I think it is meant as a seriestarter. The biggest star for me is grandfather Walter!

A+ for cozy mystery cuteness. The plot is solid, the characters are fun, and I have probably just as many questions about this world and our FMC's life as she does! Glad I picked it up. At the same time, some of the scenes had little to no segue, details were left out, and it felt a little superficial throughout. Still a good witchy/ghosty read.

Unfinished Witchness is book #1 in the Haunted Haven series by Ada Bell.

I like Emma and her plans for her inheritance. There’s plenty of humor with Emma learning to use her magic and her familiar’s snarky comments. I like that the ghost is her grandfather so they get to know each other. The guilty party completely surprised me. I look forward to the next book.

A contemporary and supernatural cozy mystery that's fun and endearing. This is the first book in the series and the author included some eclectic characters and delivered the story well. Not as dark or sad as some cozies, which is refreshing if you need something a little more light-hearted in between your other novels. I will definitely be looking for more books in this series.
