The Rant Zone: An All-Out Blitz Against Soul-Sucking Jobs, Twisted Child Stars, Holistic Loons, and People Who Eat Their Dogs! – Dennis Miller's Fourth ... Commentary on Sports, God, and Society

Rate this book

In this fourth installment of his acclaimed Rants series, bestselling author, Emmy Award-winning talk-show host, and wisecracking analyst for ABC's Monday Night Football Dennis Miller makes hamburger meat out of society's most sacred cows as only he can, with the kinds of allusions that require high SAT scores -- or at least a smart crib sheet.

This time around, Miller takes on child stars with rap sheets, women with bigger muscles than his own, herbs you don't smoke, God, and football. As always, nothing is out-of-bounds.

Dennis Miller is an American stand-up comedian, political commentator and sports commentator, and television/radio personality. He rose to fame as a cast member of Saturday Night Live in the late 1980s, and subsequently hosted a string of his own talk shows on HBO, CNBC and in syndication. He currently hosts a daily, three-hour, self-titled talk radio program, nationally syndicated by Westwood One.

In recent years, Miller has become known for his conservative political opinions, emphasizing a hawkish stance on U.S. military action and campaigning for Republican presidential candidates. He is a regular political commentator on Fox News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor in a segment called "Miller Time," and on the network's Hannity & Colmes in a segment called "Real Free Speech."

More bathroom reading from the great book disposal event at work, and it is entirely appropriate that this was a book read while sitting on the toilet, because Dennis Miller is an asshole. Sometimes he is a funny asshole, and this book gets two stars for those funny bits. He can turn a phrase rather well, and does invective with conviction. But sometimes he's just an asshole, and there's a lot of that in here as well. And then, occasionally, he is a self-righteous, ignorant asshole. His anti-NASA, anti-funding for science rant was the epitome of this mode, wherein he revealed a complete and total ignorance of how science actually progresses, and joined the thousands of fucking politically motivated shitheels in the US who want to drag this country back into the stone age, except where it is for their convenience, or for moving a dollar from one pocket to another.

Maybe I read "Rant Zone" too late; in 2017, the material feels dated and not in a positive way.

Even though I always liked Dennis Miller and I enjoyed listening to him, I now realized that he is easier to look at and listen too than reading his material black on white. Dennis Miller is a fine actor, I remember his excellent performance in "Murder at 1600." Maybe his acting skills help him to present his material better on screen.

For instance, in his chapter "Don't try this at Home..." Miller writes:
"Extreme Sports"? Folks, let's call this what it is: weird sh*t invented by guys who are willing to die to get laid..." is only mildly amusing when you read it.

It's also mean because everybody knows that these athletes are better built than the average American.
In short, though many of his humorous jokes might work well when presented in person, this book did not do it for me.

The chapter I enjoyed the most was "high and mighty pissed" (page 25) jokes about religion.

I like humor like this.

No sacred cows.

Like P.J. O'Rourke, the left- and right-wing are going to get slammed. Different motivations and different reasons, but slamming nonetheless.

Everything is on limits.

Most stars, movements, beliefs, athletes, educational systems, politicians, talking heads, and laws ought to be made fun of all the way to being skewered. Dennis will provide this gladly.

It's perfect for a cynic.

The women's soccer team was complaining about pay and status 20 years ago, and they are still complaining.

True in 2001, true now.

The "Now, I don't want to get off on a rant here, but" intro and "that's just my opinion" outro are repeated every essay. And guess what? It's funny. It's like "I'll be back." Accept it and have fun with it.

I like this book. That's just my opinion.

Pretty damn funny. I just can't help but laugh at like every single page, just too much. I have read several of his books & can't help but like his humor & way of writing. Just plain old good stuff. It's sometimes nice to read stuff that makes you chuckle just so you can not have to think about the other crap going on in the world or even in your life. If you need a break, just remember, laughing in public is an auotmatic while reading this.

Hilarious. I love satire and sarcasm, and wordsmith Dennis Miller is a master of both. This book is 18 years old and just goes to show, the more things change, the more they stay the same; and history repeats itself, constantly. Check it out.

This was a quick read with short chapters and although it was published 18 years ago, the material was less dated than you would think. Miller’s take on everything from football and relationships to therapy and education are amusing with a lot of truth there.

Dennis Miller is back at it again with his fourth voume of "Rants". He and his team of writers don't miss a beat with there acerbically witty views and criticqes on celebrities, culture, and society. An added twist to this installments of "Rants" was Dennis Miller's new foray into football broadcasting on top of his weekly HBO show. With the additional commentary on football in this book, he can now feel for the growing number of people needing two jobs to get by (particularly those who have the oh-so ungrateful tasks of bitching and watching sports for a living, poor babies!)
Yes, its pretty much the same old same old for Dennis - and to me that was the biggest letdown of the book. Many of the issues dealt with in this book have already been done in other "Rants". Originality was lacking in many parts. Not many rants on politicians, sex, celebrities, and society can be kept fresh and interesting time after time, even by DM.
Still this book is a must-read for Miller fans and those who love to hear the high and mighty knocked off their precious horses.

audio for book club.
bleh. It's good to confirm I still don't find him funny. By the 3rd audio cd, I was yelling back at him "Yes, IT IS! IT IS JUST YOU!" when he said "but it might just be me" ACK! I swear if this were 4 cd's, I never would have kept listening. Thank goodness it's at least a short one!

Conservatives occasionally complain about liberals being a humorless lot, but I haven't heard much funny from Miller since 9/11 changed his weltenschaung. Fortunately, this was written or compiled before that. And I don't care what anyone says, I dug him on Monday Night Football.

A very funny collection of Miller's "Now I don't want to get off on a rant here, but..."s. I really like his style of humor!

Series of "rants." I believe it follows the form (and catch phrases) of his HBO specials. He is generally funny, but maybe too topical so that they becomes dated fast.

Written before Miller became a neo-con, this may be the last gasp of Dennis Miller as I'd like to remember him. A shame, that. But the book was a good read, as I remember.

Fabulous, just fabulous. As usual, Dennis says out loud what many of use wonder all the time. Be warned, though, this book is NOT for the vocabulary challenged!!
