Review for Honor Bound by Joey W Hill ONLY!

WOW WOW WOW....What a very beautiful story.

Peter meets his lady in a BDSM club and after one night of play he knows that she is the woman for him. Coincidently they are both in the Army and are due to be deployed. They meet the next morning at the airport and Peter declares that he wants to see Dana when they both return and that he will write to her. These first few chapters weren’t particularly riveting and I honestly thought I wasn't gonna like this one, but I carried on and it turned out to be heart-breaking.

Peter continued to write and send letters to Dana on a weekly basis and returns home 14 months later only to discover that she had already been home for the last year after suffering massive injuries. One side of her body is quite badly scarred, she only has very slight/minimal hearing in one ear and is totally blind. Dana, who understandably has severe PTSD, now sits in a chair all day, barely eats and having no family/relatives is watched over/cared for by neighbour. The only thing she shows interest in and keeps her going is Peter's letters, but of course believes that he will never want her now and nothing can ever come of it!

Peter tracks her down, tells her that he still wants her and against her will takes her from the place she was living in back to his home and cares for her. He loves her and believes that the remarkable woman that he met that night is still in there somewhere if only he can reach her. I have to say that I cried buckets reading this and adored Peter so much. He didn't care that this woman couldn't see, could hardly hear and that her once perfect body now had imperfections, he loved her and wanted her and refused to allow her to give in.

Even if I didn't want to continue with this series I would have to because I NEED to read more about Peter and Dana and see how they are doing.

rating for Honor Bound by Joey W. Hill 5*

2nd read: May 2015

1st read: January 2013
Quote:
“No one’s touched me for so long, Peter. Not like this. Like I’m real and . . .”
“Not broken?”
Reaching up, she touched his face. “Yeah. But I am broken, aren’t I?”
She was killing him. He circled her wrist, held it and turned his mouth into her palm, nuzzling. “You’re wounded, sweetheart. That’s all. You’ll heal, if you give yourself a chance.”

This review is just for Honor Bound by Joey Hill as I've yet to read the other stories.

It's a 4 star story for me as another Knight of the Boardroom find his forever girl. This started off a bit 'meh' as Peter meets an experienced sub in a BDSM club but the story absolutely explodes to life when something shocking happens to Dana and the whole story takes a much more emotional journey and Joey Hill is so good at dragging out her character's innermost feelings.

Really could not put it down.

4.5 Stars
5 out of 5 for hotness

4.5 hearts

How long did it take me to get hooked? 4%! Seriously at the 4% mark I already had shivers running down my spine in anticipation.

I can’t get over how much I love the Knights of the Boardroom. Not only do I get a severe case of the swoons due to their extreme dominance but they all have such big hearts.

You know I’ve never really been convinced of the enjoyment that can come from a BDSM relationship. Although the thought of someone putting me on my knees and making me submit to their every command is thrilling, I’ve just never overly enjoyed reading about it. If you want to be spanked that’s your prerogative but leave my fat ass alone. But Joey Hill’s books? Gees, I’m literally still in the open mouthed and wide eyed stage at how easily she can suck me in and make me a part of her stories.

I don’t know what she is like as a person, or how she feels about her writing – but from a reading perspective her work is confident and entirely convincing. The characters are never weak – and no I’m not just talking about personality – each person is realistic and that is no easy task when you are writing about these sorts of men.

I find a lot of erotic authors focus more on sex and rely on the steamy factor to get a reader snared, but Joey is completely different, especially in this story. This was a really emotional erotic romance, it wasn’t frilly or pretty or flowery, it was hard hitting, full of grit, determination, emotion and pain. And I loved it.

Alrighty then...

Tale the first: set-up made me bristle quite a bit. H and h's late husband were both friends and business rivals. H's secretary was h's best friend. After the death of her husband, h had taken over the company. Construction apparently pays well - the h's secretary owned a condo in HI (not time share, which I might have believed, but outright), so does H. Heroine takes secretary up on offer to use condo for a week, with every intention of getting laid. Secretary lets H know, so he can stay at his condo the same week. H "rescues" h from some guy who is reluctant to understand "no", then asks h why she is really there. Apparently the thought of "I wasn't aware I needed to clear a vacation with you" never crosses her mind - she tells him she's there to get laid. H/h hook up, then afterwards, it's back to business as usual(?!). I mean; beyond the improbability of a mere secretary owning a condo in HI - while working in Tulsa, there's the notion that the h has to have approval from her competitor to take a vacation.

Tale the second. Rather poignant. Heroine is a 40-something former supermodel who trusted the wrong guy 20 years ago. His selling lewd pics of her to tabloids didn't have any affect on her career BUT...her dad was a minister. Uh oh. She's pretty much kept everyone at arm's length ever since. She's having surgery in a few days because a tumor (or polyp) was found in/on her uterus. The boss has feelings for her and after she breaks down following a business meeting, he seizes the opportunity. In this case, he offers to fulfull a fantasy for her - a threesome - and keeps her distracted up until surgery and hangs around afterward. The tumor/polyp is benign fortunately, and the H refuses to let her go.

Tale the third. So a guy walks into a fetish bar, picks up a sub, and fulfills her fantasy... Then she's gravely injured in Iraq, while he's in Afghanistan. He finds out about her injuries, and goes after her. She's now blind and nearly deaf. And a good deal of the story is his form of psychotherapy. Hmmm. I mean; I suppose snapping out orders might get a soldier up out of the easy chair but... Or maybe it's that he takes her to a club - a crowded club - 48 hours after dragging her from the easy chair she'd been moping in for close to a year. You'd think the sensory overload would leave her in a crumpled heap on the floor. Just a little weirded out by that one.

Tale the third. Odd fantasy where the language is crude earth but there are 2 moons. Hero is high ranking soldier. Heroine is slave. She's owned by an ambassador to a rival nation. There's intrigue, sex (obviously), a blocked assassination attempt, a faked death, etc. What little world building there is, is interesting.

What an excellent collection. Three of the four stories are contemporary erotic romances, the fourth seems a timeless otherworldly (but not paranormal) fantasy.

Jaci Burton tells the tale of two old acquaintances who start with the intention of no-strings sex. The exotic Hawaiian settings are beautifully described. The contrast of the return to everyday business life was a great metaphor. The protagonists had to get past fears and grow to acceptance of feelings in order to get their happily-ever-after. Three and a half stars.

Jasmine Haynes gives us a story of a former supermodel businesswoman and her boss. Each must learn to a heart. Again, in another setting, the protagonists had to get past fears and grow to acceptance of feelings in order to get their happily-ever-after. The setting of worry and fantasy fulfillment gives some excellent contrasts. I liked the scene where he took her shopping to choose the best outfit to set the scene for fantasy fulfillment. Great sex scenes and what looked to be a beta male turning into an Alpha in disguise. Three and a half stars.

My favorite story in this book is Joey W. Hill's Honor Bound. The author manages to pack a novel's worth of character growth, emotional realizations, and plot into this little novella. Two service-people hook up for an amazing night of sex before returning to the front. The bi-racial relationship is described but is not an issue in the forefront of the plot. How an erotic romance manages to surpass nearly every other mass market story in dealing with faith and even bible quotes is stunning. Though I do not share the characters' beliefs, the author used them to show how faith gets one through. The BDSM club scenes are fantastic, but take them out of the story and you still have a wonderful well-written tale. I was in tears during more than one scene. We are left with a feeling that the human spirit is a marvelous thing. Five stars, no doubt about it, and worth the $15 cover price (though I got it from an online swap).

Last we have Denise Rossetti's work. A warrior who comes to understand how a slave can be fiercely brave has to balance his protective instincts with his duty and diplomatic requirements. I only wish the author had put as much effort into revealing the heroine's side of things. A solid four-star winner.

Worth re-reading.

Review only for, Novella 3 (knights of the Boardroom) - Honor Bound by Joey Hill

Well alright, alright alright....

Yep, much better. I really liked these characters and their journey. Definitely much more legitimate than the last book.

Peter and Dana's story was compelling; both in the military, both already into 'the scene' (unlike the last 2 books) so actually, their initial meeting and further story is completely believable.

I thought Hill did a really great job of contextualizing the characters and their overall story considering it was a short novel and yep, it was hot. Made more so because the emotional factor is there and reads true.

Peter is a great character, I have a soft spot for him and although he too is 'perfect' like Lucas, for whatever reason (probably because his dialog isn't as schmaltzy) he doesn't come across like a Gary-Stu.

If you like super sexy, romantica books but only get anything out of them if they characters are well defined (and not just paper-cut outs of horny bastards looking for an excuse to rut on page) give this series a go.

Again - not a recommendation for most of my sweet reading GR friends, but if you like A LOT of kink in your sex (of the D/s and BDSM variety) you should give this series a try. It has a great storyline with characters that stick with you well after reading it!

AGHHH! This one killed me!! Anytime you add somebody who has suffered a terrible trauma while serving in the military it makes my heart break a little bit. Peter never really did much for me - outside of sounding like a HOT HOT Dom, but he stole my heart in this book. I shed more tears while reading this book than I have in a while - I just felt the pain the Dana was suffering and when a big bad ass hottie like Peter cries that is my undoing.

Jaci Burton's story - 3 stars. It was a quick predictable read, no great twist or turns.
Jasmine Hayne - 3,5 stars. Again predictable, still there was more drama and dept of characters
Joey W. Hill - Skipped. I am not a BDSM fan, sorry.
Denise Rossetti - 4,5 stars. Loved the stry and both characters ( even their names). Best story in the book for me.
Overall, I give this book 4 stars.
P.S I love the cover ! Am I the only one that wants the same lingerie?!

Four stories. I felt like I wasted my time and could have been reading some really good shit. Instead I decided to plough through. The first two stories were ok. But next BDSM was a little unsettling. The fourth ... I didn't bother with.

This has 4 stories in one book and even though I liked the short story idea.... the writing left something to be wanting.

I have read Jaci Burton before and she is intense passion and I read that one pretty fast. Her characters bring the heat in all kinds of ways. This story seemed the most seamless.

Jasmine Haynes had a pretty good story too if you’re into threesomes. It was less than a 100 paged so I read it as well.

Joey W. Hill. I stopped reading this story after like 20 pages. I was confused on the scenery and not really in BDSM. So I got bored rather fast.

Denise Rossetti. I had high hopes of this story. I think it is set in Roman era? Not quite sure. It had the setting of middle eastern countries. But... I skimmed through it. The story or plot line didn’t grip me and I know these are short stories so it might be hard to capture your audience but I felt like I was flying all over the place in this story too. Trying to remember the characters names and the purpose they had was tiring for a 120 page story.

So all in all I really only liked Jaci Burton.

Anthology2

The next offering of the four authors.

Still exploring the same themes, in slightly different scenarios, because the couples are less connected to each other - threads are more tenuous.

I only really got through three … because I really wanted more Knights of the Boardroom. But, I enjoyed Clay & Ella, Sophia & Frank in their own environments and their developing intimacy and commitment, very much.

But, Peter and Dana were a whole new world, multilayered and deeply affecting.

Beautiful.

I only read Jaci Burton's No Strings Attached and per a goodreads recommendation I tried Joey W. Hill's Honor Bound.

I also started La Petite Mort by Jasmine Haynes but I only got to the third chapter and decided that the story couldn't appeal to me less. While I could relate to the woman's predicament, I honestly could not, in any way, conceive of using sex as a coping device. Speaking from experience I can say that not only was it the furthest thing from my mind at the time but I would also think that a doctor would have restricted sexual relations mere hours before a procedure involving her sexual organs. So yeah I was incapable of swallowing all that down and reading the story regardless.

Now with Jaci Burton. As long as she is not writing paranormal, I am a huge fan. The story had all the makings of a longer romantic book and was wonderful. Not only was her male lead a hottie but her female was a completely normal woman that anyone could relate to. I would say my only complaint in this story was that Ella seemed to want to compare everything to her deceased husband, she over analyzed almost to the point of annoyance. In the end I can say that the setting and Clay made it worth the wait.

Joey W. Hill; well I can say that the writing style was great. She invoked my emotions into the story to just short of tears. Considering this is a novella one would think that wouldn't be possible. This is however is an excellent story. Starting the story off with Peter and Dana meeting in the BDSM club where the K&A men spend their time. Both Dana and Peter are about to be deployed, so they spend one memorable night together. After that the story takes a shocking turn and grows from there. I can tell you that honestly I really liked the romance despite the fact that BDSM stories tend to put me off. Now I just have to decide if I would like to continue the Knights of the Boardroom series or not.

I picked this up at the library on a whim, and I was very disappointed. I didn't care for any of the four stories.

All four stories have the same controlling, dominating alpha male type. I really don't care for it, and it can veer into behavior that is very stalker-ish. For instance, in the first story, No Strings Attached,

The story Honor Bound also has some weird exoticising of a black woman (in the US, no less). Here's the description of when the male romantic lead first sees her:
In fact, she wasn't anythinglike the women who usually attracted his attention. Yet here he was, unable to look away.
She was a black woman, for one thing. While the beauty of dark skin had teased his gaze before, he'd never felt pulled toward it as he did now. He had the taste of toffee on his tongue, making it easy to imagine her skin tasting like a complementary caramel, or a swirling chocolate. Or perhaps something spicy, exotic.

I don't think I'm particularly attune to exoticism, and this really jumped out at me.

Finally, the fourth story has major problems. While it certainly is sexy, it also involves a woman who was in a very abusive situation, and the repercussions were never dealt with. She was

Sadly, I didn't find any new authors. I found four authors that I will now be avoiding.

When I read the first anthology Unlaced I fell in love with the authors offerings in each of the short novellas. In this anthology by far my favorites are Joey Hill and Jaci Burton's. These two took me straight from my recliner into the story line with the characters. In Joey's story of course that would never happen in real life as not into the BDSM scene personally, in Jaci's though my heart pitter pattered right along with her sexy widow and her husband's best friend. I would love to say that my motives for reading this book were "pure" but readily admit the no-holds-barred sex in each of the novellas was one of the main reasons. The pleasure of enjoying the characters created by each author and the stories they had to tell was a much added bonus!

The first two novellas in this anthology were okay, but I really didn't care for the last two, particularly the final one. The last novella was in an unfamiliar world, and there was no explanation of the "rules" of that world. I'm sure that previous works by that author introduced this environment, but, for readers just "stopping by," things were confusing and often out of context. I'm not a big fan of series material being part of an anthology like this one. In my opinion, anthologies are for stand-alone stories, and the last couple of novellas in this anthology missed the mark.

No Strings Attached - Jaci Burton 4 stars
A cute story about a woman who finds lust and love after several years of widowhood.

La Petite Mort - Jasmine Haynes 4 stars (contains a threesome)
This one has older characters, and I like the hero's determination.

Honor Bound - Joey Hill 4 stars (BDSM)
I was afraid of it being too much BDSM, but it's not and I liked the characters.

Rhio's Dancer - Denise Rossetti 3 stars (Fantasy)
That was quite enjoyable, but I didn't really connect with the characters, I don't know why.

If you are looking for a book full of sexual abandon this is the book for you. The stories were all pretty good with the exception of the last one, I didn't care for that one. I was surprised by how much I liked the story with the Master/Slave relationship as that is not my usual thing, but this one was very sweet in it's own way.

The first and second stories were steamy but predictable.
The third story was by one of my favorites, Joey W. Hill. I was reminded of why she's one of my favorites. :) The characters were vivid and emotional even if the storyline felt a little far fetched.
The last story was pretty good but the ending was boring.

Wish there'd been a few more surprises but overall it was okay =]

SO FAR OUT OF THIS SERIES, I ENJOYED THIS THE MOST. PETER'S STORY HAD MORE DEPTH TO IT THEN THE OTHER STORIES. WITHOUT SAYING MUCH, BUT PETER AND DANA ARE IN THE ARMY AND THEY MEET AT A BDSM CLUB AND THEY NEVER TURN BACK. THERE ARE A FEW BUMPS IN THE ROAD BUT ITS A WONDERFUL STORY WITH SOME VERY STEAMY SCENES.

I liked this anthology a whole lot better than the previous anthology by these authors ('Unlaced'). I almost skipped this book because that one left me feeling... meh. I'm glad I gave it a chance. The first three stories were outstanding, and Joey W. Hill's story was especially power-packed with emotion and detail. I didn't get into the last story, but that's just my personal taste.

I purchased this compilation for Honor Bound but did read a couple of the others. I'd give this installment of KOTBR a sold 4.5 stars. It seemed to be driven more by an emotional story with the secondary focus on the sensual. I'm not usually a fan of M/s relationships, however, I did feel this one had a balance often not found in others.

My rating is for "Honor Bound" by Joey W. Hill: I really wanted to like it but I couldn't override the BDSM aspect. It was my first attempt with this genre and I made other attempts since then but BDSM books are definitively not for me!
