These stories and more have escaped from the mind of Russell C. Connor. They want to creep out of your closet at night. To come slithering from the darkness under the bed. To get into your nightmares until you scream yourself awake. So read on, if you dare. But once the terror starts...there's no turning back.
Russell C. Connor has been writing horror since the age of five, and is the author of two short story collections, four eNovellas, and ten novels. His books have won two Independent Publisher Awards and a Readers’ Favorite Award. He has been a member of the DFW Writers’ Workshop since 2006, and served as president for two years. He lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his rabid dogs, demented film collection, mistress of the dark, and demonspawn daughter.
His next novel, Predator, will be available in the fall of 2018.
I'm not a big short story reader, either on their own or in collections. I had read one of this author's novels, so when I saw that he was offering this short story collection for free on Kindle, I went ahead and downloaded a copy. The stories were really well-written, and many of them resonated with me. The novel I happened to have read by him was the first volume of his Dark Filament series, which seems to be to him what The Dark Tower was to Stephen King a few years ago, and reading that helped me to understand two of the stories in this collection, "Goggles" and "The End of Things". There was also a very short and rather gruesome story about an aspiring writer's unhealthy idolization of a bestselling author that made me wonder what Stephen King would think if he ever happened to read it.
I won’t review every short story here. I do think this book is entertaining, stressful, and horrific. Some stories have dark humor while others are serious which makes this a great mix of ideas. I would love for some stories to be expanded on. Also, I was unaware this was a book of short stories. After restroom break I was like wtf just happened. Restroom Break is pretty funny and I would love to see this expanded with maybe the building is a portal to hell. Kudzu was an entertaining story of something similar to a 50/60s scifi movie but with more blood. There is a story about a dog that is drowned that got to me but in the end don’t fuck with dogs. Also be warned that Goggles is about a school shooting and maybe now days something like this needs a warning. Anyway I could go on and on but I do believe every story in this book is worth a read.
I met Russ at a comic con and was interested in his writing. Like any anthology I like some of the stories better that others but many of them are brilliant works of dark horror.
