BYU Studies: Spencer W. Kimball and the Revelation on the Priesthood

Rate this book
Edward L. Kimball presents a marvelous account of the 1978 revelation granting the priesthood to worthy men of all races. Beginning with a brief history of the priesthood ban, the article then traces President Spencer W. Kimball's personal support of the Church's longtime position until, at the death of President Harold B. Lee, it suddenly became his problem. The subsequent process by which President Kimball became convinced that the time for change had come, and how he involved his counselors and the Twelve in preparing for the divine manifestation that followed, is one of the finest examples of leadership in Church history.

This is the best, most clear, most straight forward information I have found about the policy of black people not allowed the priesthood and about how it changed. I feel so much better informed about the history and I learned about revelation and what needed to happen and change for the inspiration. I definitely think this is a must read, this is just so important to understand.
One thing I wish was included would be the negative responses to the change because I'm sure there were some even if there wasn't a lot but it just ended with the whole world being excited but seeing as there are still lingering ideas of racism taught in Sunday school, seminaries, and home, that should be included or at least acknowledged by the reader that the work isn't done yet. But yeah, anyone who is going to discuss this controversy, member or not, needs to read this.

As best as I can determine, this is V47N2 of BYU STUDIES, named erroneously for its lead article. Without an image of the cover, this identification could be in error. Without describing more of the content, I regard this book record to be erroneous totally.

The associated articles are all historic and valuable for greater insights.

This should be required reading for all members of the LDS (Mormon) church. It is one of the most powerful, inspiring, and humbling articles I've ever read. I learned much about revelation, church administration, and the difference between a church policy and church doctrine. It turns out the priesthood ban was a policy, not a doctrine. That's a pretty major distinction if you ask me!

I have even greater respect now for the members of the church who faithfully endured a long period of being denied full membership in the church and the blessings of the gospel. I now realize how much I have taken those blessings for granted.

This also a great story about prophetic revelation that strengthened my testimony.
