無頼男 -ブレーメン-

Rate this book
Reiji and Kasuga head out to Tokyo to become the "Gods of Rock," but they seem to always attract trouble. On their way, Hayama Ryo and Fujii Ran join them in their quest. Despite its rockstar type look, this manga really is about action.

Lol, what is this?
Bremen is a series that doesn’t seem to focus too much on any genre. It begins as a comedy around the formation of a teen rock band, then becomes a social drama around the exploitation of teen models and ends up being sci-fi mystery around a sect that plans global conquest. It sounds weird but it could work out if the pacing was done right.

…And it wasn’t. Everything unfolds too fast. You hardly get to grasp the situation before the story turns to something else. The first part reminded me of something between Beck and Detroit Metal City and I must say it was ok. The Bremen members are plain retards yet ready to take on the world, lol. The second part is also ok but just not as appealing as without the high amount of comedy and the fast pace, it feels kinda disjoined. The last part… lol, wut? Where did that come from? Some more foreshadowing wouldn’t be bad.

The artwork is rather crude and stiff at times but it ain’t much of a problem. The mangaka is doing a semi-professional work that is generally very good for such an underground theme. You can see he has given a lot of passion in his drawings and that is a major plus.

Bremen could be great if it wasn’t moving so damn fast and random. The characters are indeed funny and interesting, the comedy is rather successful and the themes are played along nicely. It is still a good read but it could have been a lot more.
