Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
If, like me, Gohan is your favourite character, you're in for a treat. Whilst most of this collection focuses on training montages, it contains one of the best power-up moments to feature in the entirety of the franchise, and for that alone, it's deserving of four stars.
I can't remember if I said this in the context of these 3-in-1 omnibus versions, but DB does a decent job pacing things by the tankōbon. It would have been especially relevant to mention it last omnibus, as we had a volume for Jinzōningen Nos. 19 and 20, then a volume for 16, 17, and 18, which ended in the advent of Cell, then a volume covering the threat of Imperfect Cell and leading to his first transformation. Here, we have a volume about Cell reaching Perfection against Vegeta's hubris, a volume about the threat of Cell and the training for the Cell Game, and a volume acting something like the "preliminaries" for the Cell Game, ending with Son Gohan preparing to rematch Cell as an SS2.
I've often seen a criticism for the Jinzōningen/Cell Arc about how most of the world's problems are the fault of the Dragon Team. That's especially true here, in Volume 32. Vegeta refusing to kill Semi-Perfect Cell in order to test his strength against a completed Cell. Kuririn refusing to kill 18 because he wants some pussy. Trunks refusing to help Vegeta in order to appease the Saiyajin's pride. And I guess even Trunks pushing into Super Saiyajin Grade 3, not realizing the speed and stamina drawbacks. I suppose you could make an argument that Son Goku fucks up in Vols. 33 and 34 by not cluing anyone in on his master plan, but Son Gohan ends up exhibiting performance anxiety anyway, so it wouldn't have changed anything. Going backward, it's maybe silly that Son Goku and Vegeta let Gero finish the Jinzōningen, but doing so will allow the Dragon Team to gain a level of strength necessary to defeat Buu in the future - even though that wouldn't have been planned yet....
It's kind of funny seeing how long the fight between Goku and Cell goes, knowing Goku won't be the one to defeat Cell (well, he'll technically be there in spirit, I guess...). I mean, in a way, the same shit happened with Freeza, but... well, I don't think Trunks was planned when Goku first went Super Saiyajin, whereas I do think SS2 Gohan was planned before the Cell Game formally started.
I feel like I've said this before when reviewing the Full Color manga, but Cell ends up being a very different sort of villain from previous main bad guys because of his different motivation - or lack thereof. Pilaf, Red, Piccolo Daimaō, Vegeta, and Freeza all wanted global (or galactic, in the latter two's cases) domination. Ma Junior and Dr. Gero wanted revenge on Goku for his past defeats of other baddies. Cell was programmed to kill Goku, but his Saiyajin DNA hijacks his mind and he kind of really just wants to prove himself as the strongest warrior. Our next villain, Babidi, will be another "world domination" guy, but the ultimate villain, Buu, will take Goku's "waku waku" to the extreme with his chaos. I'm not sure how much Toriyama planned the themes here, but Gohan's eventual defeat of Cell could be something like Gohan proving his strength to ease Goku's mind and have him fuck off so Gohan can pursue his academic career, as realized through defeating an avatar of his father's Saiyajin battle-fever. (In which case Goku and Vegeta working together to plan the Super Genkidama would be them maturing beyond their individualistic battle-fever by teaming up to kill an avatar of "waku waku" bloodlust... to be more or less thrown away when Super begins, though at least Jiren would parallel Goku, and I guess Zamasu is kind of a foil for Vegeta and/or Goku as well...)

This is so cool! Filling in all the gaps from watching most of this in my childhood. Funny, entertaining, and action packed. Really loving reading the series. Kinda bummed that I'm almost done!
The Cell sage continues throughout all three volumes of this VizBig edition, and it remains one of the weakest and least inspired of the series. There are many redeeming moments within, however.
In Volume 16, Vegeta comes out of the Room of Spirit and Time and challenges Cell in his new Super Vegeta form. He outclasses Cell by such a large degree, he allows Cell to destroy 18 and attain his perfect form, which is clearly too strong for Vegeta.
In Volume 17, Trunks steps up after Vegeta's defeat. He transforms into an incredible bulky transformation, but he can't touch Cell because he has too much mass. Goku comes to this conclusion in the Room. Cell lets Trunks live and decides to hold a tournament in ten days, and really, this is just kind of the low point for the series. It's just a silly setup for more of what Toriyama thinks the fans want: a martial arts tournament and a ridiculous villain to fight. It's kind of silly. But everyone spends ten days preparing. The best bit of the saga is Goku going to find a new Namekian to replace Kami-sama as the God of Earth; the humor in this chapter really helps make the read more enjoyable. Hercule shows up at the Cell Games, and his buffoonery is just annoying; Toriyama really has to work hard to redeem the character in the end.
Volume 18 finally sees Goku and Cell go at it, but the battle is frankly disappointing because Goku concedes in order to let Gohan fight. All of his friends argue with him, and it seems they are right when Gohan doesn't appear to have the will to fight until Cell kills Android 16 and sics 7 mini-Cells on the Z fighters. This is one of the low points of the series, because it's just a lame retread of the Saibamen Vegeta and Nappa brought to Earth in the Saiyan saga. But they awaken Gohan's power, and the volume ends with him finally ready to fight Cell.
Although this volume has a few memorable moments, overall, there's not much in the way of new ground being tread. If you've stuck with it this far, though, you should probably make it to the end of the series, because it does get substantially better. Cell is just such a lame villain, though.

Cell’s third form isn’t as fun as his goofy fish-lipped second form. Still a really fun read, though. I can’t wait to see Gohan ‘roid out and kick Cell’s butt.
(4th choice book) I think the book starts out with Cell attaining his perfect form which is amazing but his ego is massive. Then Vegeta does his ultimate attack the Final Flash it destroys a third of Cell's body but because Vegeta cant do anything more Cell regenerates and knocks out Vegeta. Witch Vegeta knocked out Trunks can finally transform and surpass his father then tells Krillin to take away Vegeta. With his father away it's now Trunks vs Cell one on one. Trunks is greatly stronger than Cell but its revealed that Cell was basically letting that happen then Cell just dodges every punch and every kick. Trunks realizing he cannot beat Cell he gives up then Cell comes up with the Cell Games and does not kill Trunks. At the Cell games its one of the main characters Goku vs Cell it turns into a long and tedious match they both seem to be at equal power but then Goku just gives up. After Goku says he gives up he goes up to Gohan tells him of his hidden potential also keep in mind Gohan is technically 11. Then Gohan goes down to fight Cell but before it can begin Goku gives Cell a senzu bean which restores all of his power. After a little bit of fighting Gohan stops and basically but not exactly says no I don't want to. With Gohan saying that Cell releases the Cell Juniors which pummels the Z Fighters. Then Android 16 jumps out at cell grabs him and tries to blew himself up to destroy cell but Bulma removed the bomb so Cell then beheads 16 but he is still functioning so he tells Hercule Satan to throw his head at Gohan he then does so gives Gohan a little speech Cell crushes the head Gohan transforms into Super Saiyan 2 then kills the Cell Juniors and it ends and it gives Trunk's backstory. Overall that I loved it.

Akira Toriyama commands my attention by the Dragon Balls. Even when I know what happens! As soon as the volume showed up I dropped all other books. Primary focus: acquired. It’s so deliciously good it’s no wonder half the character names are inspiration from food. I’ve complete bias with DBZ. No shame.
This just might be the best pound-for-pound volume of the entire series so far! I sometimes feel that the Cell Saga doesn’t get enough credit for how stacked it is with iconic moments! I won’t lie, I had to put on the song that plays when Gohan turns SSJ2 just for the chills!
Just to see how the cell saga progresses and see how far the characters have come, especially gohan was really cool. The book was def thrilling the whole time and though it kept the same enemy the whole time pretty much, cell is really cool so it was all fun!
Yet another Tenkaichi Budōkai? Really? I mean, it works, but he couldn't think of another way to do this? That said, it's still great. I liked the comic relief of Hercule's posturing.
Jacob pizano Ms. Moles English I 16 March 2017 Dragon Ball z Volume 6 A Galactic empire has took over 150 plants and is about to take the world that u are currently on goku has to stop Freeza. Dragon Ball Z by Akira Toriyama Follows the characters Goku , Gohan , Krillin , Piccolo And Bulma. The theme is basic it is just good vs evil . The book is good it is a good read. Some things i like were the beautifully illustrated fights and the design of characters. Some things i did not like were the setting cus a planit was dum.It made me want to watch the show.I would recommend this book to everyone and i love this book. The book i'm reading next is DBZV7.THis book has increased my interest in this genre and read more of Toriyama work.
Have ever wanted to read a book that has a lot of action in it? Well then, this is the book for you! In volume six of the dragon ball z series, two androids appear, #17 and #18, and our warriors have to defeat them! But a bigger threat is on the rise, Cell! Cell seeks out the androids and absorbs them! Then, Cell transforms into his perfect form, an unstoppable being! Next, he creates a tournament called The Cell Games! If none of our fighters are powerful enough, he will destroy the Earth!
The themes of this book are work hard and you will achieve greatness! Also good always prevails! I think that these are the themes of the book because our warriors train to fight Cell. Also the good always prevails part is because of the fact that if they try hard enough, they can always win.
In this book it is about the evil cell,a monster created by Doctor Gero to take over the whole universe, but first he must fight the earth's hero's Goku,Gohan,Piccilow,Vegeta,Trunks, and krillin so to fight all of them he decided to open a tournament and whoever defeats him would save earth. they had nine days to prepare for this tournament when the nine days were up they would decide the earth's fate. I like this book because while they were fighting there was so much action like when Goku was fighting they were going so fast and avoiding each attack but when they did get hit they did not feel any pain so they kept on getting up but after a while they got really injured
In this manga , the earth faces the worst terror it has ever seen the android by the name of Cell. This android is stronger then both android 17 and 18. As Cell goes on his reign of terror throughout the city, the Z fighter are trying to find a way to fight this terrible monster due to his huge power level.
