I adore second chance love stories. I like books where lovers are struggling to work out problems even as they deeply love each other. And this was a good one. A short story without being rushed.

I’m partial to second chance love stories as often in romance, love is metaphorically black and white. Either the lovers are together or not, very rarely do you come across books where lovers are struggling to work out problems even as they deeply love each other. Once two people fall in love that’s the hard part right? Except when the real world, jobs, stress, families, hopes, plans, and desires all seem to slide their way into the relationship and in this case these two have drifted apart until their relationship has ended and all that is left is to sort the details. But Scott gets shot in the head (literally) and both men must re-evaluate their lives.

This short story was very sweet and lovely, focusing on the two men as they struggle to find a way to express themselves in the face of their past arguments, Scott’s injury and their uncertain future. Of course it took an event so drastic for both men to realize their love for one another and unfortunately both men gloss over their problems by simply reaffirming their love and agreeing to let the past be the past. Romantic for sure but it also doesn’t address the problems that got the men to the point of separation even if the majority of blame is placed on Nathan’s job. Scott waits around for several weeks after his accident, literally waiting for Nathan to finally leave him without doing anything to stop him. It takes Nathan to finally bridge that gap with a romantic gesture, even if it solves few of their problems.

I can’t help but think these two men will have a cycle of allowing their problems to come between them until they almost break, then realizing they love each other and around again. However, the two men were undeniably romantic and sweet as was their reunion vacation. The story slides over the problems between the two to focus on their love that never died and sudden reconciliation. The men come across as a little too sweet and their resolution was a little too easy, but romance fans will likely enjoy the heavy seduction scene at the end and the happy ending. It may not be realistic, but it’s always nice to dream.

For a sweet and short story about lovers reuniting before that final straw, this was an enjoyable tale to read with a satisfying ending. This author should appeal to fans of sweet romance that enjoy reading about love conquering all. You won’t be disappointed with this lovely story.

This story concerns Nathan and Scott, an established couple of four years. Nathan is a lawyer, having joined a cutthroat firm 18 months ago. This has caused serious problems in his relationship with Scott, a writer. Nathan has turned into a "money hungry shark", which in turn causes the breakdown of his ability to relate to Scott. They are on the verge of a break-up, Nathan about to leave, when Scott walks unwittingly in on a bank robbery and is shot in the head. This is what it takes for Nathan to realize he has very nearly given up the only thing that matters to him, for a job he doesn't even like.
The story is how Nathan goes about wooing Scott back. It's very, very sweet (some parts are, yes, sugary)and the type of feel-good to read after something angsty. Scott has residual trauma from the shooting, and I did like that this wasn't miraculously explained away. It is a sweet story of getting a second chance.
