About the author

Georges Duhamel was a French author. Duhamel trained as a doctor, and during World War I was attached to the French Army. In 1920, he published Confession de minuit (ISBN 2-7152-1793-5), the first of a series featuring the anti-hero Salavin. In 1935, he was elected as a member of the Académie française.

"Ik haat de twintigste eeuw [...]."

Duhamel beschrijft in "Civilisatie" de paradox van de toenmalige Europese beschaving: met de medische vooruitgang repareren wat de technologische vooruitgang kapotmaakt. Als chirurg in een veldhospitaal tijdens WOI moest hij herstellen en oplappen van wat aan het front werd vernietigd en beschadigd. Hij heeft het in deze verhalen over de patiënten en hun verwondingen, hun dromen, hun lijden, ... en over de oorlogsbureaucratie en de grote mechanische pletwals waar ze een voor een in vastzitten. Schitterende autobiografische vertellingen die de gruwel niet schuwen, maar vooral zeer menselijk zijn. 4.5/5!

"Civilisatie, beschaving, is niet in al die afgrijselijke rotzooi te vinden, en als ze niet in het hart van de mens is te vinden, nou, dan is ze nergens te vinden."

Dat is de indrukwekkende slotzin van de verhalen die Georges Duhamel publiceerde op basis van zijn ervaringen als arts in de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Duhamel had een diploma geneeskunde, maar geen praktijkervaring toen de Eerste Wereldoorlog uitbrak. Hij meldde zich aan en bracht vier jaar door in veld- en andere hospitalen in de frontlinie of achter de linies.

Duhamel schrijft in Civilisatie 1914-1917 verschillende aangrijpende ooggetuigen verslagen van zijn ervaringen met gewonden en oorlogsslachtoffers. De klinische, heldere beschrijvingen verraden zijn achtergrond als arts, de stijl, blik op het gebeuren en de ruimere context, verraden zijn bekwaamheid als auteur.

Nergens spreekt hij echt een oordeel uit over de oorlog, maar toch schemert in elke verhaal de afschuw door voor de moderne oorlogsmachine en hoe die de lichamen van 'Frankrijks mooisten' genadeloos verwond. Het boek passeerde de militaire censuur, maar daarvan merk je als lezer niets. Terecht bekroond met de Pirx Goncourt in 1918.
Om stil van te worden. Zoals van al die literaire oorlogsgetuigenissen in de reeks Oorlogsdomein.

Si j'avais été bouleversé par Vie des martyrs, j'ai trouvé ce second volet plus complexe !

J’apprécie ce qui fait les récits de Georges Duhamel, un cynisme lucide, mais jamais dépourvu de cœur.

Duhamel ne tombe jamais dans la moquerie des blessés, mais se moque de l’absurdité de l’administration ou des machines.

Les patients ont des noms, des prénoms. Jamais de matricules. Duhamel les écoute, les humanise. Ce ne sont pas juste des « blessés ».

Là où, Vies des Martyrs nous plongeait directement dans l’empathie et la douceur, Civilisation nous met face à une réflexion plus distanciée, plus chirurgicale.

Война — самое ужасное горе, которое только может представить человек. Словно бы на законных основаниях одна часть людей решает себя достойной добиваться разрешения политического кризиса путём убийства и разрушения. Другая часть — не желает принимать то за допустимое, уже себя считая вправе наносить аналогичный урон противнику. А если таких частей более двух, разворачиваются масштабные боевые действия, в результате которых начинают гибнуть миллионы людей. Именно в Первую Мировую войну человечество отметило обострение данной проблемы. Вполне очевидно, почему укрепилось мнение, насколько необходимо избегать таких конфликтов. Но это всё мысли наперёд, когда за короткий срок между двумя Мировыми войнами случится время для осмысления недопустимости столь масштабного кровопролития. Пока же следовало показать, насколько опасными становятся именно современные войны. Жорж Дюамель отразил события с новой для читателя стороны, показав будни полевого хирурга.

Prix Goncourt 1918. C'est mieux !! C'est cynique, lucide et totalement conscient des absurdités phénoménales de la Première Guerre Mondiale. L'angle du brancardier permet de prendre un certain recul sur la boucherie qu'était cette guerre et l'ironie de l'auteur fait souvent mouche. Un livre déjà très sévère avec les sociétés belligérantes qui ont utilisé les citoyens comme chair à canon.

Retrouvé dans les livres de mes grands-parents. Paru en 1918 . Un regard très sévère et émouvant sur la tragédie humaine des soldats de la première guerre mondiale.
