Summer Stock!

A Summer 2009 Bonus Issue of O&S is certainly reason for being grateful that the arts thrive even in the heat of summertime. With this issue some changes occur that are like tryouts of Broadway with Summer Stock. First, the issue is predominantly poetry - very good to superb poetry - but somehow the poetry takes a bit of a back seat to the new focus on photographs of the poets: the cover usually reserved for a painting by a featured painting in the magazine is instead replaced by a photograph of poet Taylor Mali in a fine, choreographic leap well captured by the photographer, but for those who are following the progress of previous O&S issues it is a bit distracting.

But not to worry about the content of the magazine. Except for the new attention to photographs of poets the content if solid. Several fine visual artists are featured, not just from the US but also from other areas in the world - another positive step for the magazine, one that suggests an international development that is very healthy.

The variety of poetry styles and the topics the poems address show a broad spectrum. Likewise, the artists both displayed and interviewed have the magazine's usual democratic variety of styles and subject matter. Perhaps the abundance of color images, be they photos of poets and artists or examples of art work, crowds the written word here - especially for an issue that is meant to be tilted toward the poets. But changes in presentation and in trials in varying presentation are healthy signs of a magazine so well accepted that it can look at different avenues. It makes us eager for the next issue!
