Cufflinks and Claws

Rate this book
He’s got a billion dollars, but he wants priceless love to last a lifetime. It’s not impossible to have love and money, right?

Dixon Meade made his fortune buying and selling property to create a haven for his pack. He doesn’t let many in on his secret. He’d give his riches to have the one man who makes him whole, but that man has no idea Dixon isn’t just another brilliant businessman—he’s a wolf shifter. He’s also got less than forty-eight hours to claim his mate and accept his role as the alpha of his pack. The question is, will Sidney accept the various sides of Dixon?

Sidney Ayers has worked alongside Dixon Meade for the last ten years. He’s been secretly in love with him since he hired on at the brokerage firm. All he wants is to be with Dixon. When Dixon proposes marriage, Sidney can’t turn him down. There’s just the tiny matter of Dixon being a wolf.

What’s a guy to do when the man of his dreams sprouts fur and has fangs? Run the other way…or accept a forever love?

Rags to riches is a well known literary trope. It often features in romance, and does so here. But there’s a problem. Rags to riches isn’t very romantic when you’re falling in love with the person who kept you in rags. Cinderella fell for the Prince, not the evil stepmother. Americans are so used to bootlicking for billionaires they don’t see the billionaire boss paying slave wages, is the evil stepmother!

Sid earns 50k a year. Sid laments looking rumpled when he had to sleep at the office because he couldn’t afford to put gas in his car. Sid lives in a shoebox apartment. Sid couldn’t afford to date or wear nice clothes. But bootlicker author then has Sid say “you paid me well,” Sid!!!!! Working is not just about eking out an existence. If you can’t afford to date, or quality clothes, or even to put gas in your car, you weren’t paid well.

This book goes to great lengths to have Sid so worried he’s not a gold digger. What!?! The real question is why Dixon is paying his staff so badly. Sid is senior enough that he accompanies Dixon on global work trips. Senior enough to be in high level meetings. Senior enough that he’s seen, and understands, paperwork pertaining to multi million dollar land purchases, but Sid has never questioned why his boss, who clearly relies on his skills and expertise to run his empire isn’t paying him more.

The book reads like a teen wrote it. With Sid never really asking relevant questions like, if I’m your mate why did you wait three years? Why did you date other people? Nope! Sid is spending too much time worrying if people will think he’s a gold digger, which is, sadly, the kind of things teenagers with internalised misogyny think are the real issues. Either that, or a sentient MAGA hat wrote this, whilst living in a trailer park, and sending Trump their last dollar for his defence fund.

Beyond that, the book is incredibly poorly written. It’s like the author realised it’s a romance (but it’s 2023 so romance means smut) leading to jarring sex scenes out of nowhere. Sid hasn’t even quite nailed down the details of Dixon’s sudden interest and cockamamie plan, before he’s being tumbled into bed. From there mommy porn formula is used to great effect with sex ever other chapter.

Sex is interspersed with itineraries of Dixon’s riches, pushed along by a barely there two dimensional villain in the form of a challenger for alpha, and a lot of tell but no show. Example: someone proclaims Sid and Dixon must be growing closer because Dixon introduced Sid to his sister. It’s been about 10 hours at this point since Sid transitioned from rags to ballgown.

Later, when

As matter draw to a conclusion Dixon opines “But he hadn’t been with anyone like Sid before.” I wonder if Dixon would care to explain what that means because so far literally all the reader knows about Sid is he’s not a gold digger. Which I understand is something very important to teenage girls, but is it enough to make Sid the one?

Then we get the epilogue where Sid points out, once again, he’s not a gold digger. 🙄🤪

This book had so much potential, instead it just traded in stereotypes and treading well worn tropes, proving once again the worst thing that happened to writing is authors thinking they don’t need an editor (and no, your neighbour who likes reading books isn’t the same as an editor).

A Joyfully Jay review.

2.5 stars

It could have been fine that the story’s primary focus is the sex, but the plot makes zero sense. Dixon has bought, with his own money, land and lots of it. It is legally his land. His half brother is going to challenge Dixon unless he’s married in order to gain rights to the land. In fact, his brother is already making deals with loggers and real estate developers … on land he does not legally own? And it’s not like, once he kills Dixon, the deed to the land will suddenly be in his hands. Shifters are unknown to humans, so I don’t see how shifter law is going to hold water in a court of law and somehow award the land to Dixon’s brother.

The nonsensical plot and the undeveloped characters did not work for me in the least. The writing is stiff, with an emphasis on telling and exposition rather than showing, with the characters taking so much for granted without any of it really mattering to the story, or showing up in the story. I’m sorry, but even if you’re just looking for some spicy sex scenes between a shifter and his fated mates, this is a solid pass, from me.

This is a fast paced shifter story; almost everything happens within a few days. Dixon needs a mate quickly and his wolf has chosen Sidney, his assistant. Sidney is thrown for a loop as he finds out his boss is not only a shifter, but needs and wants to marry him.

I liked the Sidney was willing to listen to Dixon even as the revelations keep coming. I felt like Dixon was too trusting of certain members of his pack especially considering his family's behavior. Dixon seems to have the mistaken belief that the money he's spent on security ensures their safety, but I wasn't impressed. William was a keeper though. He always seemed to be on top of everything.

I give credit to Sidney for taking the leap and agreeing to marry Dixon. I was glad that Sidney was a good person and cared about Dixon already and that those feelings grew. Dixon was a good guy and definitely an improvement over his father, so I'm glad that he was able to take care of Kael and move forward as the pack's alpha.

I wish I liked this more

I was looking forward to reading this book based off of the description, however, I found this a bit... Lacking. Things happened and progressed way too quickly. There was no build up, or growth, or depth, everything just sort of.. happened all day once. I enjoy books that have more backstories and build up, and this just didn't have that. I'm sure there are people out there who will enjoy this book, and even though I didn't enjoy this, I still recommend you to read it yourself.

*I received an early copy of this book and this is my honest review.*
