Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
Another fun installment in this post apocalyptic series. As with the first part this was very well presented and written. A interesting and atmospheric concept for sure. I just wish I could have a little more background to the world in this story. A few things seem a little vague. Enjoyable but not as good as part one. Now to wait for part three.
They're a group in PUNISHMENT, a special team that hunts down non- humans who run. They're called the shepherds because they get animals back in line. But not the ones who run. Really, they do things SO BAD to non- humans who run, that it makes everyone ELSE stay in line. In the before-times, psychopaths weren't common, so back then they were all thought of as evil. But the truth is, while they're all bad, some are worse than others. They all enjoy hurting us, and hurting animals, but most have other things they enjoy doing most of the time. But there are some whose only joy comes from hurting non-humans. It's the one thing that gives them any pleasure. And those types of people, they end up And the WORST of them, the ones who maybe humans a bit, they end up in Shepherds. in punishment. even scare the other.
This series seems to be something a little different. It is more along the lines of a traditional book than a comic with the story being told in the form of a diary, written by Homer, one of five children named after great authors of the past times.
With Poe missing, the four remaining children discover clues which could lead them to a fabled sanctuary for non-humans. Suspecting that Poe has turned human, they must decide whether to take the chance and try to escape the city. The consequences of being caught are not worth considering.
This second issue, slightly longer than your average comic, really ramps up the tension. I was thoroughly gripped and now must wait until February to find out what happens next. 5 stars!
Issue 2 starts with Homer reminiscing about a game Poe would play with him whenever he was feeling down. He would ask Homer where they were going. Adrift without Poe's leadership, the Embies decide to escape the city after quarreling briefly about doing so. In the end, they trust Homer's interpretation of the items in the box Poe left behind when he "disappeared."
They succeed in escaping through the sewers. The land outside the city is a husk of the pictures Blake sees in the archives. It is ravaged by a savage war between Homo Sapiens and Homo Versus that did not even spare the children. While walking through this husk, Homer and his Embie friends are found by the infamous John Crook and his gang of Shepherds. They hunt escaped Embies, animals, and Homo Sapiens.
Milton loses his hand but the group escapes.
The issue ends with a shocking twist - Poe is a Shepherd!
I had a harder time than usual getting through issue 2. It was a bit of a drag. However, I couldn't tell you why. When I reached the last page and flipped back through everything made sense. Nothing seemed extraneous.
Extraneous details or side-stories done wrong do not deepen the characters or make the plot more meaningful for me. IIn the case of issue 2, I am glad I trudged along with the story and made it to the last page.
I am eager to learn how it all ends.

I cannot get over how amazing this story is. I couldn't stop reading. I needed to know if the kids would be okay and then BAM! Twist at the end; I didn't expect this! I cannot wait for #3!
I won't be continuing with the series. There is little artwork, and none of it is very good. The story is predictable, right down to the plot twist cliffhanger. It had a lot of potential, but very little delivery on that promise.
Okay this got good near the end of the book 📕. I can’t believe that POE was a SHEPARD! Like whatttttt? Didn’t see that coming. Plus Homer almost got captured by the John Crook yikes 😳. Gotta read #3 to see what happens!

I enjoyed this one more than the first, the plot finally started to show and I got a better understanding of what is going on. So far the art while minimum is the most captivating aspect of this series. It accents the story perfectly.
I read this a while back, and don't remember the story. I gave it 4 stars and noted that there was good drawings and graphics throughout. I noted that this was a good story with a very imaginative plot and a recommended buy it.
Snyder set the bar pretty high either way Book of Evil #1, but Book of Evil #2 actually creates even more tension and suspense and ends with a shocking twist that just takes this already great series to another level.
3.5 stars Follow-up to this take on a dystopian future by Scott Snyder. Poe's friends, the rest of the children now work along for an escape. The story progresses into fresh territory outside the prison. Are people who disappear turning. Waiting for the next.
I liked this, but I was still somewhat confused about what was going on. I, however, did not expect that twist at the end so I’m definitely intrigued to continue on to the next one!
