What would you do if you found out that everything you thought you knew about yourself turned out to be a lie?
Laelia has always known she was different. Being one of the rare few to possess a mate mark and be predestined to love another is just one of those factors. Not to mention growing up as an adoptee among werewolves, especially when you can’t shift. On the night of her twenty-first birthday, when she should be gaining full control over her wolf, something happens that changes her life forever. Unfortunately for her, three strangers happen to witness it. Magic. Accused of witchcraft, Laelia is dragged before the council of werewolves. To prove she is truly a werewolf and avoid a death sentence, she has to take part in a series of trials that test strength, intelligence and power. Discovering who her mates are will be vital to helping her survive this.
The werewolf trials are beginning and not all is as it seems. Who will come out the victor?
This is a medium/slow burn romance with material some might find distressing. Aimed at readers 18+.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 Spice: 1/2🌶️/5 MFC: I like Laelia! MMC(s): if her mates are who I think they are, I like them as well! Plot: 4/5 Book cover: 4/5 Would I buy a physical copy?: we’ll see how the series plays out.
This gives me big hunger games vibes and I’m HERE for it!! The world building is great and incredibly vivid.
Laelia’s wolf is unique, thanks to half of her “unknown” genetics. Can I just say how happy it makes me that her pack loves her, even if she’s different and could put them in danger?! So many books have the packs turning their backs but not this one!
We meet a couple potential mates (I’m thinking they’re Nicolai, Syn and Scott as of right now.) and one actual mate, Joel. I like him from what we’ve seen. We don’t get a whole lot of relationship building since they meet at the council meeting and things happen quickly before they’re shoved into the games. We do get a quick spicy scene though, so that was nice!
This was told from Laelia’s POV, I’m hoping to get some of the guys POV in the next book. Especially Nicolai!! If he’s not a mate I’m going to be so sad. You can tell he’s loved her for a while but Laelia hasn’t mentioned anything besides having a crush on him while growing up. 😅
The cliffy wasn’t horrible but I’m hoping it doesn’t mean what it’s portraying! Looking forward to book two!
I was giving the ARC of this book, and I must admit I was a little apprehensive as it's not a book I would normally read. I am so glad I got to read it, though, I loved it so much. It made me feel all the feels, I hated the council with a passion and hope that in the next book, they get dealt with. Alpha Green was my favourite, and so was Syn. That cliffhanger was good, and I am dying to know what happens in book 2.
Really enjoyed this one! The beginning started off just a little slow for me but it soon picked and as things got rolling I couldn’t put the book down! Especially towards the end. Also what a massive cliffhanger! Straight onto book two we go!
This started out promising then the writing turned more observational, like the heroine wasn't involved in her own story, just watching from the sidelines lost in her head. Not my kind of storytelling.
The heroine seems to change her personality sporadically, feisty, shy, then a terrified rabbit. If it wasn't for the fated mates thing, I wouldn't say she particularly connected with any of the MMCs. That smut that was chucked in there to make us keep reading was cold, zero chemistry.
I probably won't read book 2 that ending put me off. The author watched a certain popular movie (trying not to drop spoilers) and failed to execute the same storyline with a supernatural twist.
3 stars because I read the whole book with a bit of skipping.
This book sets the stage for an amazing new world and I am so here for it! I loved it from the very beginning. Laelia is an intriguing main character and I am so excited to see which of the guys join her harem. With wolf shifter (well any shifter) paranormal romance, I love seeing the pack dynamics and the interactions between the side characters and the main characters and this one did no disappoint. I think the relationship building was so intricate, loved it.
I saw some other reviews compare this to the hunger games and as I started to get to the trials part of the story I could totally see where they were coming from. I liked the tense situations, not knowing what was gonna happen next. It felt almost like a movie, super intriguing and exciting. I also really enjoyed Laelia's dad and alpha, they were a huge part of this book and I am so worried one of them won't make it by the end, just a gut feeling that has me all nervous! I also liked the baddies in this one, like they were done well and made me hate them instantly. Grove and Bates, and especially the council need to get their karmic justice. I am super excited to see Laelia learn more about her powers since she didnt get to in book 1 (this was more get the background and story/world built) and see her defend her loved ones and take out some of these guys.
The love interests....so much yum! I loved her push and pull with her one mate, I wish she would have told him though that she was destined for more before they bonded. Something important I would have said beforehand but their time together was adorable and steamy and cannot wait for more. My heart felt like it was punched and squeezed with the one where he finally did something and she said she was so overwhelmed and she needed a friend. I think he might be my fav, but its super hard because we didnt get to learn more about him yet (I mean any of the guys really, just touched the surface with them since its only book 1). And the mysterious alpha, I think he will fall sooner than we think and will be a super protector for Laelia. SOOOOO excited.
Ok I have rambled enough! I would give this a solid 4.5 stars. I thought some parts were a little clipped and could have been rounded out a little more/more detail given, but I thought the author did a great job setting up this new world, got me invested real quick. I need to see what else can happen with her powers, her wolf, what happens when she bonds more mates, etc. And that cliffy hahaha. Harsh but totally get it haha. I feel like he will be fine and maybe he might be another in the harem...who knows? Book 2 is thankfully up for preorder so it won't be long to find out ❤️
Review: An intense and magical, why choose romance that kicks off an all new paranormal series! This book is written from one POV and centers around Laelia as her origin story unfolds.
In book 1, Laelia finds out that she is more unique than she originally suspects. The council of elders surprises her pack on the eve her birthday and declares that she must present to a hearing and plead for her life. I thought the way the council and their deceit to the shifters was written well and really developed the tension and conflict in this book.
When she presents to the council, Laelia learns that the tradition of the Trials will commence early and that she must participate to save her life. During this outcry, we learn who one of her fated mates is and thus a cascade of events begins. I like how this book only introduced one mate at first. I found it important as she already had so much going on, however I did enjoy the inclusion of Syn, Nikolai and Scott in this book.
The book ends on a major cliffhanger but it also unravels the beginning of her mysterious past. While short to mid length, the first installment packs a punch and will leave you needing more of these characters. I enjoyed reading about her emerging powers and it was fun to see how naive she really was in this book.
Midnight Magic, book one in the new Bloodlines series follows Laelia, a young werewolf. On her twenty-first birthday, the night when all adult werewolves gain full control of her wolves, doesn’t go as planned, and her whole world changes in the blink of an eye. Three strangers enter her pack’s land and bear witness to her using what they call magic. Labeled a witch, she is forced to stand before the werewolf council where being marked with a rare “mate mark” proves that she is at least part wolf. Now Laelia finds herself sentenced to prove her wolf side by competing in their barbaric trials. Failure to complete a task, or any of the tasks involved, will result in her death. When an Alpha from another pack comes forth, announcing he is her mate, will that make a difference to the council? And can Laelia survive long enough to make her way til the end? The book ends on a cliffhanger, which is not surprising if you’ve read any of the author’s previous work. This book gives you enough of the story so far, but more than enough to make you eagerly wait for what happens next. Hopefully the next book comes quickly and we can discover Laelia’s fate soon enough.
I love werewolf or wolf-shifter books, but I have a hard time finding ones I like so I was a little worried when my friend and I decided to buddy read this book. I ended up loving this book so much and found it to be very unique. One thing I did not like about the book was that it was told from FMC's pov and I prefer multiple pov if it is an RH because I like to get the guys point of view about everything that is going on.
FMC Laelia is a werewolf but has never been able to shift into her wolf form and on her 21st birthday that changes but her wolf form is different from everyone else's in the pack. What I loved most about this book was that her pack loved and cared about Laelia despite her being different and did not turn on her. In most of the werewolf/wolf-shifter books I have read the FMC is mistreated especially if she is different and most of the time is banned from the pack. I was so happy that this was not the case in this book. I am not sure how many mates she will end up with, but I have an idea who two are and know about one. So far I like all the guys and I hope we get to know them more in the next book.
When I heard author Erin O'Kane was writing a wolf shifter, I knew from the start I was totally there for it. We join Laelia, a young wolf who was found as a baby in the woods by her now 'father' in the woods. He knew straight away she would be special, and that fully comes to light on her twenty-first birthday.
I love this world that the author has built. It revolves entirely around wolf shifters, and as we find out in the book their hatred for witches. There is so much about the world that even Laelia doesn't know about and we get to discover it right alongside her as she finds out some shocking truths about what goes on outside her pack. There are also some really intriguing male interests, including her mate. As a why choose fan, of course, I want her to end up with every single one of them and I'm hoping that is what will happen as the story progresses.
We hit somewhat of a cliffhanger at the end of book one, but this has left me waiting not so patiently for book two.
I liked where everything started with this story as always Erin does a great job of world building. As people were introduced though it felt like things were lost in translation. The connections just didn't feel right between characters.
The FMC also felt a bit all over the place. One moment she was strong, and in command of herself. Then she'd become a toddler having a fit, or making split second decisions that were clearly bad, but she'd keep going.
I think her mated status though is so far my biggest hang up. She knows she's multi fated, but she never let's on to the men surrounding her that this is the case. The missed communication makes her feel very juvenile, but then she's just jumping in bed with her first mate like everything has been settled.
I don't know, I've given the book 4 stars because I'm invested enough I want to continue, but I need the FMC to make drastic improvements to her interactions.
Wow! This book quickly made it to my #1 shifter story. The world Erin has built in this book made it impossible to put down.
Laelia is a feisty werewolf that struggles to feel like an outsider despite all the love her pack gives her. Not being able to shift does not help this feeling.
On her 21st birthday, everything changes. Laelia finds out that there are several important things her father and pack have hid from her.
Midnight Magic follows her as she is put through trials in order to save her life while finding her mates. The men we meet in this book will have you loving them or hating them. I am excited to see how they play a part in her story and who her mates will be.
I was not expecting the book to end when it did and it had me sitting there flipping the page back and forth not wanting to accept it was over.
This is definitely a story that has grabbed my attention & I am eager to continue on with it.
Laelia is definitely a character I can see myself rooting for. Yes I immediately felt for her because her back story was sad but with the happiness intertwined with it with her adoptive dad & her pick backing her.
I do feel like she flip flops a bit but also like I can understand that too because I mean I’m pretty sure I’d be a hit confused too.
I definitely liked Joel from the beginning he gives off that cinnamon roll vibe with the whole tough guy, doesn’t talk much vibe. And I’m here for it.
I have a feeling I can tell who her other mates are but I don’t like the fact that she isn’t as open to them to especially since she was told she would ‘mates’ not just one.
This book gives off hunger games meets wolf universe.
There is a nasty council ruled by corrupt beings, a competition of each pack having to submit 2 of their pack mates for the competition, and a blessed young woman who has a long journey ahead.
It’s really good. Page turning. It has a cloud of mystery for Lealia’s blood line is probably going to be explosive in the next part of this series. Meeting one mate has been interesting and a little steamy. She has several more to meet. There is a vast network of friends and foes.
This is one of the shortest books I’ve read by Erin O’Kane, but she did not disappoint with the details of characters and world building that I feel is one of her many talents.
Pretty sure no one here wants to volunteer as tribute, but if they're not being forced to participate, then they're volunteering to try to protect the FMC in a werewolf version of the Hunger Games. A slower burn then I thought it would be, the story here takes over front and centre! The FMC is sweet and definitely unaware of how her wolf pack is viewed by the rest of the werewolf world, not to mention she is a bit clueless about herself. With a hunky close friend/her childhood crush, her newly discovered mate and some other intriguing males that may be important - it's definitely not predictable what direction this story is going in. Tension filled and emotionally charged, this is a gorgeous book to read.
What a delicious and deliviously good book! Seriously though, I was glued to every page. The story was entertaining, gripping and had a bit of the feels which made this slow-burn, why-choose so good. Laelia was such a great character, she wasn't all fuss and was more deal-with-it type of girl which I love, yes, she may of had a few insecurities but she owned it and she didn't let them stop her. And, the men we meet, yummy, I love big boys and dark broody ones so having them here was a great side dish. As for the storyline, it flowed at a good pace and kept things moving nicely. This definitely was an entertaining read and a must read which I cannot wait for book two!
Wow 🤩 I love ❤️ this so much and wholeheartedly recommend it specifically if you love wolves then this is definitely the book for you because it is freaking of the charts good and dam those wolves I mean why choose right when you can them all ……..🤪 Laelia is my kinda person she is strong , determined kick butt kinda girl with no fuss and just dealt with what ever she needed to ,job done ,loved this 🥰 and those man wolves yummy with a capital W Woop woop 🙌🏻…it’s so well written and you just entranced and trapped within the words of the book 📖 so if you love strong women and gorgeous men then bring it and download it go on what ya doing go go go …..I even put the link in below soooo 😜
So there is far too much exposition in this book. Please, just let the characters so things, I don't need a pages long monologue of the FMC especially since she didn't know anything. So far this is feeling very YA but I'm hoping for more maturity in book 2. I will say the "cliffhanger" at the end is lame. It's so stupid done there is a book 2 so it's so unnecessary. The book needed to end sooner, which would have made it very short, or go longer to make this a complete book. It's so annoying when authors cut a book short at an awkward point because to me it shows the don't trust their story or writing to lure the reader to continue the series.
Laelia was found as a baby in the woods by a shifter, and adopted into his pack. On her 21st birthday, she discovers that she is some sort of wolf hybrid, and has magic. In a world where shifters hate witches, this is not ideal. The wolf council forces her to participate in wolf trials to prove her worth. This was an interesting read, not too bad at all. Im a sucker for hunger game like trials though :) This looks like its gonna be a why choose, with the FMC having multiple possible mates. Slow burn with tiny spice in this one.
This was an interesting and exciting start to this amazing new series and intriguing new world. I was instantly captivated with Laelia, and she kept me riveted to my seat wanting to learn more about her and who would be joining her harem.
A fantastic start with great writing and filled with interesting characters and a storyline that was action packed, emotional, entertaining, suspenseful, magical and exciting.
After the way it ended, I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
What an incredible start to what is so far an exciting journey for our brave female lead! Laelia is already an amazing character not fearless, because let’s face it no one is, but brave. She dives into the unknown with so much hanging over her head and manages to do it with personality and strength. I definitely cannot wait to find out what happens, that cliffhanger definitely got me! I also can’t wait to see how she navigates through not only the trials set before her but how she discovers and develops with her mates. Erin O’Kane never fails to amaze me.
Not a bad read. Has potential. I was getting irritated with each chapter as at the start of the next chapter, we’ve skipped ahead. Then then author takes us back and recaps what we missed. For me, I find with that writing style there can be a lack of connection to characters because while you’re told of what happened, you miss the emotion behind the actions. The cliffhanger was also ridiculous. There wasn’t much that even really happened and as soon as the trials get going…bam The End.
This book was Amazing. It is a why choose PNR werewolves story. This storyline was well written and the characters were Amazing. This is the first book in the Bloodlines series. The FMC has experienced some things and overall her character was well written. The MMC are a whole other set of words. You will like, love, and hate them. This story does end on a cliffhanger but it is so worth it and will have you wanting more. Great story!
You can never go wrong with Wolf shifters. At least that's my motto because I've loved every one I've read. Midnight Magic was no exception! Add a bit of magic to our FMC (who believed she was just a wolf) and Lealia finds herself in a bit of a pickle. Now, the concept of trials is a favorite of mine so I very quickly became entranced. This book kept me on my toes with a bit of action, tension (a little bit of spice), and easily loveable characters. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Wow - that ending just smack you in the face. I did feel like the first part was a bit slow, but once Laila shifts, it amps up and just keeps going. I’m loving who I think are Lailia’s guys. I can’t wait to find out more about Syn, and learn more about Lailia’s powers. Great series opener, that kept me up until 4 am because I needed just one more chapter until there were no more left - hopefully book 2 is out soon!
I liked this book. The story moved at a fast pace, while I didn’t like it when the fmc wavered on her feelings and what proprietary dictated, I still read to the very end. I hope she sees past everything to realize that she has 3 smokin hot guys after her. The trials are hosted by the corrupt council and I think winning them is the first step to taking them down. Can’t wait to read the next book!
Okay- so Erin O’Kane has always written well rounded characters and builds the suspense in every story- but O. M. G. I think I couldn’t cheer more for a heroine. And while it hints at more to come, the sweetness of each entanglement is a treat individually and collectively. A new highly recommended series to any of my friends. I am so glad I waited for the full series to start. I would not survive the wait for the next book!
This started good, and I enjoyed Laelia. Her mates are a bit of a mystery. She only feels the mate bond with Joel, which is weird because there are some good potential candidates around her. Will the mate bond snap in the next books, or is it going to take long? Or not happen at all? Don't know. The plot is interesting, a bit of a Hunter Games meet shifters vibe. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. Let's hope it continues to be interesting.
Wow, this book was an amazing read that has all the parts that make for an easy and enjoyable read. It moves along at a pace that makes for an easy and enjoyable read that is perfect for the flow of this story. The characters are amazing and no matter what happens you cannot help but love them. This book needs to be read and at the top of your TBR list, there is no doubt about it.
This book was definitely not what I expected but I loved it anyways!! Laelia was taken in by a wolf pack but she is not what she seems but they love her anyways. She faces hard moments, love and support and there’s a bit of spice too. The first in a series, I thought Erin did a great job setting up the world for future books. I can’t wait for book 2!!
Erin has astounded me yet again . Laelia found as a baby by a werewolf .. and brought back to the pack . Accepted and loved by the pack and raised as their own .
But the plot thickens
I have been spellbound from start to finish . The most incredible shifters story .. nearly as well loved by me as the war and deceit series ! A must read . Thank you so much for being blessed to receive a ARC xx
