In Cherokee Parks latest release, Colt’s Chasing a Shadow, Parks expands on the life of Colt Raines, a Confederate veteran trained in the art of dealing death that all began with the short story Colt’s Almost Home. Although now a peaceful rancher with a small place in East Texas, his skills and sense of right and wrong are still in high demand, which brings Jacques Devereaux in search of those services. Devereaux’s daughter and grandson are in trouble, held for ransom by a vicious killer, the leader of a band of men like him who have been gathered for the sole purpose of robbing trains and banks, and leaving a trail of bodies in their wake.
As Colt takes on the job, he begins his pursuit where the criminal was last seen, Abilene, Kansas. Always seeming to be a step behind, Colt chases him into Colorado, New Mexico, back across Colorado to Wyoming, and finally to Lincoln, Nebraska. Colt manages to free the daughter and grandson and get them to apparent safety, but that is only the beginning of the fight to save them. The closer Colt gets to his quarry, the more bodies begin pile up, both friend and foe, until he finally manages to injure the elusive pariah and slow his movements. Still, the villain manages to escape once again, again leaving bodies in his wake. But his escape is only momentary, as Colt Raines, the relentless pursuer, ends his reign of terror on the plains of the Old West.
One of the most rewarding stories I have ever had the opportunity to read. There was never a dull moment from page one until the final paragraph. Mr. Parks is on of the most innovative author's I have ever had the opportunity to follow, and I have never found any of his books to be anything but great.
Five stars and more, is all I can say. I have been hung up on top many continuous series of different authors and have failed to read many Cherokee Parks novels, but that will definitely change immediately.
This story was definitely impressive, and the storylines were excellently written and the characters were perfectly selected. I was hooked immediately and did not put the book aside until the final exciting episode.
It appeared there will be a follow-up and I will begin an immediate search for the next thrilling story of Colt and his Crew. Great family oriented storyline, even with the "death and destruction" invoked by Colt and his followers .
Recommend this book; Most definitely! Do yourselves a favor and follow Colt through some of the most rewarding stories you will ever have the opportunity to read and digest!
This man Colt Raines is a man who has a strategic mind. He isn't afraid nor does he underestimate his quarry, because doing that will or might cause your death. There psychopathic parents and their son whose received a double dose of evilness. We are introduced to the tribe of Romani Gypsies, who aid Colt in his hunt for the evil Farkas, aka Shadow Man, who had practically an army of men who he had carry out robberies in different town's and States. You all need to read these stories of action that start Colt Raines, and his spotted mule Jethro who accompanies Colt on the jobs he takes. Colt Raines illustrates how many men in the West earned additional monies by going on jobs that he felt were worthy of his skills. This particular job he had to kill Farkas or he would he would murder Colt's family that's how dangerous and evil this man was. Nothing but a bunch of crazies, who Colt killed and all that death bogged him down both mentally and physically. The Gypsy lady Olga, took care of him cleansed him spiritually so that he didn't carry all that evil back with him to his family. He needed her help and she helped him.....
I really like Colt. He is most certainly what has been called a "man's man". I can assure you that smart women like strong enough who are gentle when it is appropriate. A decorations up, Mr. Parks.
Took some forms I did not expect. Reveled characters and development of the story kept the suspense of the plot open to several possible endings. Fast read.
