Brannigan's Land #3

A Month of Doomsdays

Rate this book
From the greatest western writers of the 21st century, William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone, ex-lawman turned cattle rancher Ty Brannigan returns to fight for what’s his in Wyoming’s Bear Paw mountains using his own unique brand of frontier justice…

JOHNSTONE COUNTRY. TIME TO KILL.

Former lawman Ty Brannigan tries to rope in some skittish cattle rustlers at his family ranch—and uncovers a nest of scheming bank robbers. Looks like he’s going to need a bigger rope . . .

DOOMSDAY IS COMING.

Something fishy is going on with the beef at Circle P. After a quick-and-dirty shootout with a small band of rustlers, Ty Brannigan and his son Matt do another count of their cattle—and find they have fifty heads more than before. Seems the rustlers were hiding stolen cows from other ranches among the Brannigan herd. And that’s just the tip of the cowpie. In jail, the rustlers rat out their partners to the local marshal. They’re not just stealing cattle. They’re plotting the biggest bank robbery in the county’s bullet-riddled history. And this time, they’re going to make a real killing. . . .

Months in the planning—and just days away—the countdown to doomsday has begun. Ty, Matt, and the town marshall must race against time to track down the robbers before they strike—or innocent people will die. But the Brannigans aren’t afraid of danger. When the clock runs out—and the shooting starts—every man’s days are numbered . . .

Brannigan's Land is a rather new series from William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone. A Month of Doomsdays is the title of the third book in this series and I actually don't know if I will read anymore of these. I find the interaction between the characters in the family strange and Ty the father and ex lawman clumsy. He just stumbles around and it's the kids in the family that solves the problems many times. It is a western and I love those but my time reading is limited. Thanks to Pinnacle, Kensington Books and Netgalley for letting me read this one.

Thai notices one too many strays on the Circle P ranch. When he goes to rescue one and finds himself sinking in a bogg he sees two men watching and not doing anything to assist him. After Ty passes out it is his son Matt who rescues him it will not be his last run-in with these two owl hoots they are part of the gang ran by a guy named Raise Cooper their initial outlawing where as cattle rustlers but Cooper is waiting on his friend Dexter to come with the plans to rob the bank in Cutbank. All the local ranchers have put in to build a railroad so they don’t have to carry their herds for hundreds of miles it will save both time and money and the outlaws I have heard all about it and want it. The lawbreakers or the only thing Ty is worried about at the moment his son Greg is obsessed with the sunset kid A hero out of the dime store magazine and when Greg finds out about the outlaws he wants to do something to help catch them. Like most boys who are at the cusp of being a man he will have a few fumbles but in the end he just may prove he is just as brave and courageous as his dad Ty Branigan. Will Ty and the other ranchers lose their money? They’ll also have to deal with the sheriff from Cutbank who is an arrogant money Grubber and has no experience in up holding the law but wants all the glory and he cannot stand Ty and sword knife sheriff Chris who is also Tays best friend. This is another great western out of Johnstone country and the Thai Branigan series I love these books especially the ones with the Branigan family I believe them and the Jensens are my favorite Siri‘s as I said I love these books and highly recommend them this is a definite five star read it is action packed interesting and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I want to thank Kensington books and net galley for my free art copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

The third entry in the Brannigan series has me believing this is the weakest series currently being written out of the Johnstone Clan. This one does have a good plot of standard western characters. It comes across more as one where a family is shoved into it and unbalanced to whole. Much as the last two books did.

The characters are all bumbling about and no one seems to have a keen view of what they are doing. Having a 15 year old as the focus helps a bit, as 15 year olds tend to bumble about anyway.

The writing devise of having no one listening to the kid is too obvious. All to, seemingly, prolong, or pad, the story. Thing is, when realization dawns to characters it is too quickly embraced, resolved and done. Furthering me to believe this was needless padding of the book.

There are also far two many melodramatic, emotional elements dropped in that are out of place and don’t fit the rhythm of the tale. As with the last entry, was there more than one writer assembling this? Is the end the result of editor meddling.

As with the other two….

Bottom line: I don’t recommend this book. 4 out of ten points.

There is no such thing as a bad Johnstone western. Each series is built around main characters whose belief in the law and family is absolute, even if they've had to be reformed to get there. From Preacher, the original mountain man to the Jensen family to Perly Gates, to.....well, you get the point. Many times, characters from one series will show up in another as supporting hands. The communities are true to the era, clothing, guns, food and troubles are all what you'd find if you looked them up in the history books. No two stories are the same, each character or set of characters is unique and so are their stories. The writing is skillful, readers are pulled into the story and you will laugh and cry right along with the characters. I made the mistake of picking up a Johnstone western my uncle was reading. Ive been hooked ever since. Now I share them with my reading family and will continue as long as new Johnstones are released.

The Brannigan name stands for integrity and the willingness to fight for what is right. In A MONTH OF DOOMSDAYS, the Branningans will team up with like minded men to save their town from a threat to their very way of life.

This gritty western involves another saga of the Brannigan's Land Westerns. Ty Brannigan is out to stop rustlers, from taking his herd, and thwart a bank robbery involving invested money from him, and other ranchers to get a rail spur built to get their cattle to market cheaper. But the real story involves his youngest son Gregory and his quest to prove himself to his father, and the rest of his family that he's a kid anymore, and wants more recognition around the homestead and the lengths he's willing to go to prove himself.

Okay story. Did come across a couple mistakes. Example. Bad guy gets shot by a .410 shot gun and it blinds him in one of his eyes. Later he dies and both his eyes reflect in the moonlight. Also says a .410 won't kill a man. Doubt that is correct either.

Leaves you hanging at the end. No doubt to buy and read the next one. I'll read it if the local library gets it.

I am reading this series out of order. Really enjoyed this audio book. Took me a while to get used to the cadence of the readers voice. Liked that this western was tied all together through different sub plots. I borrowed this audio book from the Sacramento Public Library through the Libby app.
