When Katherine meets enigmatic and dangerous Hunter she learns her world may not be exactly as it seems. Teaming up with a ragtag group of tenuous allies, Katherine and Hunter must come together to take the first steps in defeating a powerful evil, finding friendship, family, and love along the way.
I am still dipping my toes into this fantasy pool, trying out a new genre & if it works for me or not. Books like this are definitely my buddy from now onwards.
So the story starts with a little human girl working in a coffee shop & living with her best friend Emily who works at a library. Our Katherine's life takes a deep turn after she experiences weird sensations without her thought. And when she gets to know the reality of convention members, she's awestruck. The orcs & her love Hunter gets along this rocky path along with the King of Souls to accomplish goals to save their kingdom from the King of Vexx.
Overall, I loved all the characters & their bonding. All are fun in their own way be it Graug or The Wolven. The spice is also really great & imagining a man armed with weapons calling his girl Princess is an instant turn on from my side btw.
So I'll totally recommend to read this romantic fantasy book. It's book 1 & now I'm heading to read book 2(Looted). Bye (•‿•)
Side Quest is the story of Katherine, Hunter, the Wolven clan, and Graug of the dead fields. Katherine is a human girl working in a coffee shop next to a convention center where she meets the interesting wolven clan and Graug. One night she experiences awful feelings and is filled with dread without knowing. Enter Hunter, the Lost Prince of Kesh, who claims to be her mate. With Emily's help, Katherine's roommate, they begin a quest of Elora's Treasure Hunt to find three stones that will help them defeat King Vexx. Along with the King of Souls, they make three trips to another realm to find the stones.
I was granted this ARC by the lovely J.Lofton. She's very sweet and talented! I really enjoyed reading this book. The adventure they embarked on was fulfilling, to say the least. I enjoyed reading how the Wolven clan bickered and the love they had for their leader, Hunter.
I also loved how much love and respect Katherine and Emily had for each other. It spoke of lengths about the trust that two people have in each other. Hunter and Katherine's spicy scenes were hot!! I loved how he always called her princess and made her breath quicken with small things.
All in all the book was great but I felt at some points that it was rushed. I wanted more details about when Katherine found Emily in their apartment after the attack on Kesh. I also felt like Hunter and Katherine's emotions were mainly derived from their connection of being mates. I didn't see much loving interaction between them at the beginning, especially when Hunter told Katherine that she would be able to help him find Elora's treasures. Later, he tells her that they're mates, but it wasn't his main reason for reaching out to her. I get that he didn't want her in his life before they defeated Vexx, but it still felt as if he only wanted her because she would help them.
Through all that, I immensely enjoyed reading their story and can't wait to finish Looted!
I wanted to love this one because it is marketed as a quick cozy, fantasy with romance/spice, however, the book is only 180 something pages and I feel like a lot of them were wasted on over-explaining minor details and actions rather than developing character relationships (especially between the FMC and MMC).
I did not expect heavy world building when going into this book because of the fact it is incredibly short. However, there was not enough information to really understand the plot. Suddenly the FMC is befriending Wolven she originally thought were cosplayers and a man, who she is incredibly attracted to upon meeting him once, and setting off on an adventure that she knows nothing about. I felt like I knew more about her job as a barista and her roommate's cleaning habits then I did about the plot of the book.
Overall, the writing has potential, but is a bit wordy and repetitive and needs more.
3.5 ⭐️. This was a fun and spicy, cozy fantasy. I really enjoyed the premise of the book and the adventures of the second half. The spicy scenes were also written well. I struggled a little with the transition from the human world to the magical one. It also would have benefited from more editing/proofreading. Overall, I did enjoy this story and will be reading the sequel.
Side Quest is a fantasy romance about a human working in a coffee shop whose life is changed by some customers who she thinks are just dressed up for a convention. This unlikely group goes on through many adventures together forming friendships and finding love along the way. J. Lofton did an excellent job building the characters and creating investment in the story and plot. I loved how this book progressed and there was a good mix of adventure and spice throughout. The ending of this book was everything I could've hoped for and more. Not only did the storyline wrap up in a very satisfying way, but she successfully made me anticipate the second book. I highly recommend this book if you want a quick and exciting read.
What a wild ride. This story takes you from the mundane world of a coffee shop (little pockets of heaven that they are) to the fantastical world of magic and mayhem.
We meet our heroine serving coffee to a diverse bunch of nerds. Who then turn out not to be what they seem. We’re introduced to the soul sucking bad guys and the fight to save the fantasy world begins.
I loved the characters, particularly the orcs. Thorne is delightful in his viciousness but then I have a weakness for the ruthless ones. Hunter is a little one dimensional at times but I think his character will grow as the story develops further. The author did us over on one character but im holding out hope there is more going on there than it seems. The spice was simmering away as well plenty sprinkled throughout the book. I think I would have liked the tension between the Orc and his mate to have been stretched a little more (plus more details please!) but that’s just my particular love coming out.
Thoroughly enjoyable fantasy romp that I look forward to following into the next book.
This was an ARC copy of the book received in return for this honest review. Also the author is my friend. However I’ve known her long enough to be brutal if I really didn’t think it was any good. It is very good and I’m incredibly proud she trusted me with her 1st book baby.
Light spoilers… I wanted so desperately to like this book. It came recommended by someone with book tastes like me. I love the banter of characters in this book and over all I think it had a lot of potential to be really good! The side characters are great!
It just needed… more. We spent more time getting to know Katherine in the first 15 pages then we do between her meeting Hunter and saying I love you. Also, it feels like Hunter only wanted to find his mate because she became useful to him. Hunter wasn’t someone I wanted to be my next book boyfriend. He was very bland. I wish there was more background on characters and that Katherine got a character arc I think she deserved.
The spice is good! If you’re looking for more spice and less world building you’d like this book! The right is good and fast paced. Something is always happening. Again, I think it just really wasn’t for me.

Maybe I gave up too early in the story but this was a romance novel wrapped in a veneer of fantasy. Just not interesting to me. I made it until the "we are destined to be together" scene about 40% of the way in. It needs a good proofreader because many of the errors are wrong versions of words or a word missed or added.
I absolutely loved this fantasy with touch of spice book! This was a new author and genre for me. I liked that it was more character based and not as much building of the two worlds together. However, I loved it so much, I ordered annotation supplies to reread and annotate! That means alot! I cannot wait to start the second book in this series Looted!
Excellent characters and an interesting storyline and an easy read. The only reason I gave it 3 stars instead or 4 pr 5 is that the sex scenes were a bit two graphic for my comfort!
Was this a 5 star book? Probably not. But did it give me 5 star vibes and make me happy? Absolutely. I was looking for a cozy fantasy-romance and this was absolutely perfect to me.
