Volume 3 of Tomb Raider King is where the series finally starts to feel like its own entity rather than living in Solo Leveling’s shadow (pun intended). While tombs are still very much part of the narrative, I’m enjoying how this volume leans harder into the connection between mythological deities and their relics. This concept was introduced in earlier volumes, but it landed far better here and felt more thoughtfully explored.

That said, Seo Joo-Heon remains… a lot. He’s overly cocky and firmly sits in morally grey territory. He does what he wants, when he wants, and has very little concern for how his actions affect others.. as long as he wins. Personally, I’m not a fan of this aspect of his character, but I can absolutely see why it would appeal to a younger audience. This kind of unapologetic, dominance driven MMC is very much catnip for teenage readers.

Where this volume really shines for me is in the side characters. I was far more invested in them this time around, especially Irene, whose character finally starts to get more depth and presence. She feels less like a background piece and more like someone with her own agency and importance in the story.

And honestly? I felt genuinely sorry for the conman artist Jaeha... That man cannot catch a break.

Because this volume continues to move away from constant Solo Leveling comparisons, I found myself enjoying the story more, particularly the growing tension between Joo-Heon and the American government, who believe they can simply control everything through power and dominance. That conflict added a layer of political intrigue I didn’t expect but actually appreciated.

Overall, this was a stronger volume for me. If the series continues in this direction, developing its lore, deepening its side cast, and leaning into its own mythology, I might finally stop comparing it to its predecessor… eventually.

Jooheon is smart and resourceful, but the hunt for relics is ratcheting up. I can only imagine the chaos that’s going to happen as things start to get more and more intense.

This volume is packed with action and the expected tropes. The enemy list, skills, and mocking titles grow. The series continues to introduce intriguing ideas without fully exploring them. Radical government control, devastating illnesses that can wipe out a third of the population, and child exploitation for business profit are themes worthy of breathing time and that just isn’t given. Like most magical systems, there is a cost to using supernatural abilities in this world. Although variable based on power/class and the chosen control method, the relics’ anti-human stance tends to make these cost severe. And yet, our protagonist’s special buff negates this immediately and now seems to be working on those around him. Worse it forces a physical relationship time and time again between Jooheon and Irene in a gross ecchi way. So, what should create sacrifice and constraint is thrown away as inconsequential or humorous. This pattern repeats. You can’t use modern tech in tombs, except when you can. The tree of life is the most powerful medical tool except now it needs a companion relic. There are specific entrances, challenges, and rules… unless that is inconvenient to our story. Readers must give a certain dream logic to plot points and events. If you enjoy the unpredictable thrills and cheeky commentary, you’ll find it here. I wish Jooheon was more antihero and less villain but that’s a personal problem. (2.5 stars)

Summary: Jooheon is hired by Edward to retrieve a map relic but runs afoul of the other US team sent on the same mission. He foils the CIA, steals some more artifacts, and sends a forgery to Edward. As expected, General Kiera Clark demands compensation and he’s able to sabotage her collection. Meanwhile Irene Holton has been learning the basics of dominance and affinity to control the parasitic hand of Bankruptcy. They travel to Turkey to remove it but instead find its counter (Hand of Midas). Jooheon uses his restoration abilities to carve an escape route from Clark’s destructive powers, but they discover the Holton’s have an advanced case of relic disease and the controlling Pandora agency has formed three years earlier than the previous timeline.

I love the unpredictability of this series. Kept me on the edge of my seat.
