Picture this- a really bad Western movie with evil vampires tying to annihilate a small Texas town, Victory. Oh yeah, it’s also a love story. Are you cringing yet? I sure was when I was reading this book.
Alexandra (Alex) Gordon comes home to Victory from Washington D.C. after learning about the death of her father. The town is constantly being attacked by vampires (only the town doesn’t know that they are vampires yet). Cody Fox comes to help out with the vampire problem in Victory, as he has a reputation with dealing with “diseased” people.
I’m sorry to say that the plot was boring and predictable and the chemistry between Alex and Cody was non-existent. There are a couple of loose ends in this book, which is not surprising as the sequel to this The Night of the Vampires is coming out the end of November 2010. I’m still on the fence if I’m going to read that one or not. I didn’t like this book, but Heather Graham/Shannon Drake is one of my favorite authors and I may give her another chance in this "miniseries."

Great concept for a book, wish I had thought of it.
This was a short book, 298 pages, so Graham missed a lot of character building because she squeezed in so much plot. Consequently, I didn't warm up to the heroine and couldn't decide what she even looked like, let alone what her background encompassed...the only reason I gave it 3.99 stars.
Obviously, this is a 1st in a new series.
The 1st chapter jumped right into building the plot. The mood is suspenseful, dark, eerie, uncomfortable, without the author revealing her explanation for the gothic feeling scenes. Great writing which left alot to this reader's active imagination. Reminded me of the old suspense horror flicks that concentrated on building the atmosphere so well, then left the horror building to the audiences' overstimulated imaginations to decipher. I must add that I read it VERY late at night, no one at home but me, a dark house except for one light on by my sofa, and, the weather was perfect for it; storming with high winds and heavy rain. After I started reading, I thought, "am I going to get suckered into checking to see that I locked all the doors, avoid my uncovered windows, strain to listen for weird sounds all night?"
The opening scene takes place in 1838 in the Republic of Texas, then jumps ahead in the 2nd chapter to New Orleans, 1864, then moves again to the town of Victory, Texas where most of the story plays out.
Yes, it is a Paranormal Historical Western and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I can't decide if it's a 2.5 or a solid 3
I read this book in my ealry days of highschool and I remember it been very good but now that I re-read it....let's just say i was disappointed. I came to the conclusion that back in highschool I had to find ways to entertain myself being at a boarding school and I had only started getting into reading. So I can say I was still finding my style and was still growing.
The first chapters of the book confused me and bored me to death because i couldn't recall those scenes but as I continued to read it all came back to me and it was an okay read in the end.

A red hot passion that leaves you wanting more.
Summer 1864
We meet Cody Fox, a recovering confederate soldier who has a medical degree. He’s called into an office of a Union officer, where he’s asked to go to a small town, where several brutal murders have been happening.
Then me meet Alexandra Gordon, who has dreams of a psychic nature. She can see thing that may happen. With those dreams, she returns back to the farm her father owned, to hunt for her father’s killer.
Upon arriving at the boarding house her father once owned, there’s a dozen shot’s in the streets. Shaken everyone in the house, makes a run for the basement, though do not make it. A bunch of outlaws come in, taking everyone over to the saloon. Once in there they gather everyone up in one corner, robbing the place. Enter in Cody Fox and Brendan Vincent, who frightens the outlaws off, though knowing they’ll be back. Alex offers them a room at the boarding house after they explain they’re there because Brendan had family in a town near by, but hasn’t been heard from. But there’s something different about these outlaws and Cody knows it.
Through the days Cody teaches the town how to defend themselves against the outlaws, and then investigating the towns around them, since everyone in those towns have disappeared into thin air. There are several attacks on the city and the neighboring ranches and Indian reserves. Armed with Alex’s dreams Cody, Brendan and Alex seek to destroy whatever is now haunting the city. Not only do they have to deal with whatever is haunting the city a love grows between Cody and Alex, though Cody fights it. There’s something different about him and he does not want to bring Alex into his world, though Alex wants him.
This book was a good read. Suspenseful and gripping. The love between Alex and Cody shows, making you feel it. Heather Graham did a wonderful job writing this story, making me wish there was a sequel! I give it a four!

I've been reading Heather Graham books since I started reading romance, oh so many years ago, and have enjoyed most of them. This one was no exception. However, as I was reading this book I recalled why I haven't read any of her vampire books in awhile. I always get so tense reading her vampire books because I am waiting for the bad thing to happen. I know it is there, and I just don't want it to happen. I guess in my vampire romances, I want a bit of levity and in her vampire books, there isn't much.
This was a good story but left me so tense for most of the book I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. I liked the book and the story but I had to put it at 3 stars because I was waiting for the axe to fall after every page! Although, in actuality, the ending was a bit anti-climactic and rushed. In fact, I thought for a moment we wouldn't get a resolution in this book. That was how quickly the ending battle scene came to the story.
I'm not sure if the other two books in this series are tied with this one. I hope so because I want to know about Cody's father.
The love story between Cody and Alex was rushed as are most of Graham's love stories these days. At times Alex annoyed me and almost ended up on my TSTL shelf but since it was only a one time thing, I let it slide. :) I just don't feel that deep of a connection to the hero and heroines of Graham's recent books. However, I keep reading, hoping that I'll find that shining star that reminds me of my earlier Heather Graham reads.

I actually give this 2.5 stars. It's an interesting concept, wild west meets evil vampires and a sexy vampire hunter comes to town and rescues them all the while falling in love with a spunky girl. But the execution leaves alot to be desired. It's an entertaining story occasionally and Cody Fox the vampire hunter is an intriguing character. He is the most fully developed. There is an ominous air throughout the story that gives it a pretty creepy feel. But the writing is sporadically flat and cliched and the other characters also come off as flat.

You might think this was about werewolves but it isn't. Vampires, the wolves howl at night when the vampires come. A women is alone in her cabin her husband is on a cattle drive when she hears the wolves howling and she is afraid. Her husband is there to protect her. They make love and he's gone.
The next day the sheriff comes out to the ranch to tell her her beloved husband is dead but she doesn't believe them. When they show her his possessions she believes. The man that has been coming to her at night was dead. She sells everything and heads for New Orleans to have her baby. That was the prologue and then the rest of the story takes place in Texas during the Civil War. Vmpires are trying to take over towns and the people are trying to fight back. This is an exciting and an unusual take on the genre. Evil vampires, good vampires and 1/2 breed vampires it a wild ride and I bought 2 more book in trilogy. Love this authors works!

Not what I expected but oh so good
I did not read the blurb I just bought it bc it was by HG. So, I was blown away that the story took place in the 1800s and was western in theme. The saloons, Native Americans, Civil War…not usually the themes of the books or romances I read. However, leave it to HG to throw in som vampires, wolves, the questions of morality and we have a great story that moves at a fast pace and includes themes of small town relationships, family ties, love, paranormal and the what makes something good or bad. A start to an interesting series!

“Ho-hum” is the best word to describe the storytelling of “Night of the Wolves”. The author did a great job of describing romantic passion scenes & the heroine’s prejudice against her stepmother was interesting. Almost no effort spent in character development or displaying the diverse powers of the vampires. For the most part, the vampire attacks came in form of giant bat-birds & the majority of battle was via bow & arrows. Not very exciting. The most evil vampire, Milo, his “bark” was worse than his fighting ability & his death was almost anticlimactic.

Night of the Wolves isn't Shakespeare, but it is a quick and fun read. I enjoyed that this vampire story was set in Texas during the civil war. I found the characters to be well rounded and likeable, which keeps me turning those pages. Alex is a strong, brave female character. I found myself rooting for her from the very start.
Oh, sometimes, I really hate when you get to the end of a book and find out there is a second book. This time, I bought the book.

This was brutal, as in hard to finish. It seemed like half the story was about the sun coming up, and a page later describing its descent. You got too much description about shadows and things flying around.
Not nearly enough character development. It could have been a great story but it was more of an outline with filler. I suggest a pass.

I have to start with that I love Heather Graham's writing style. I enjoyed the start of this short series. I love trying to figure out who is bad and who is good. Alexandra and Cody characters were wonderful. There are a lot of stories from the American civil war about werewolves and vampires. Enjoyed how the two themes were blended.

Once this book got going, it turned out to be really good. Once about a quarter of the book was read, I couldn’t put it down. Vampires usually make for a good story and this one didn’t disappoint. I’m eager to start the next book in the series.

I have been reading Heather Graham novels for over 30 years. This was somewhat reminiscent of her Alliance series written as Shannon Drake. Not quite as suspenseful, nor a sultry seductive romance but it still go a 5 star rating from me. It was an easy, intriguing read with enough mystery & romance to keep me interested til the end! Definitely going to read the next in this series.

This is different from what I have read before. The characters are great and it has a kind of love overcomes all vibe to it. There is a lot of action and suspense as you would expect from her books.

good book
I don’t usually like westerns, but this western with a vampiric spin is the exception. I enjoyed the story and characters. I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.

Had a really hard time reading this one. Having a female character that keeps running back into danger repeatedly gets really boring. The concept of the story was great but it just did not have the creative juices to keep you interested

Good vampire story!

GREAT STORY
I am not very fond of vampire stories but this one was really good, especially the part where her father but a good vampire.

On a little Heather Graham kick - found a bunch of her old titles at the library. This one was good. An interesting premise and setting. Vampires are taking over small towns in the West in the Civil War era. So sort of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer, but not. Alexandra comes back to Texas from Washington, DC (and meeting the President) after her father dies to discover that the everyone in a little neighboring town has died/been killed and everyone in her town is on edge. They think it was Indian raids. Then Cody and Brendan (the real vampire-slayers) come to town. Of course, not everyone believes them about the vampires. Several more people are attacked. Cody discovers that Alex's father has become a vampire.
The vampire attacks scenes were great - they mostly come in as huge bats. Although Alex is being seduced by the head vampire using the night breeze. It was all pretty spooky. Loved the garlic, holy water, silver bullets, all the old tropes.
Based on the prologue, we find out that Cody himself is a vampire because his father came back to his mother after he was turned but didn't kill or turn her - just got her pregnant. Alex has thought all along that her father must be a "good" vampire because he was such a good man and he's never seen among the ravening hordes. So with that she's perfectly willing to marry Cody and keep house for their brood of baby vamps while he goes off to rid the world of the bad one. The end.
