Miffy dreams about getting her first bike. Find out who she plans to visit and how fast she will ride. Miffy Rides a Bike reminds children of their own experiences.
Miffy goes for a bicycle ride and we see the sights she passes. In this adventure Miffy visits her Aunt Alice, gets wet in the rain and even falls off her bicycle. This is quite eventful by Miffy book standards, but at the end of the story we realise this is just Miffy imagining what it would be like to ride a bike because at the moment she is too young!
I just read this book right now. A super sweet Christmas gift from my sister. The book was funny and relateable because I cycle everywhere now! My favourite line was "And then I'll pedal up the hill. That part is steep and long. But even so I'll manage it for by then I'll be strong.". This was very impactful because I always get angry when I'm cycling and my legs hurt but next time I will try and think about how much stronger I am getting. Lovely rich illustrations.
A very weak story but carried by some of Dick Bruna's very best illustrations. Kept the book pleasantly great.
One of my favorite summers I was living in my apartment basically by myself. Most of my friends had gone home after the semester. One of my friends left his bike. He gave me permission to use it those couple months.
I would ride a few miles to a park off a gravel road near a soil processing plant. It had a large dirt road that led to a few acres of grass and heavy foliage. There was a large tree in the first open field and I would ride there, rest my bike against its trunk, eat my packed lunch and read for hours. I would take long naps there, in the open, completely alone except for the birds and other small animals.
Near this tree, maybe a quarter-mile away, was a sand-bank into a creek. I'd go there the same, with a book and lunch, strip down into shorts and swim for a long time. There was a large tree at a deeper point of the creek which you could climb up and jump off from, into a cold pocket of dark water.
There was one section of the creek you'd have to swim through to get to this diving hole and it boasted a fast current. It would take a long time to fight against this, as if both feet were off the loose rocks underneath you'd be swept backward. And one time, battling upward, a large dog, maybe a golden retriever, was floating down toward me at a great speed. Noticing this, I positioned myself to where it would come, basically tackled it so we both wouldn't launch downstream, held it with both arms and my chin barely above the water, and trudged forward.
At another sand-bank on the opposite side of the creek I'd enter, near that large tree, stood two helplessly worried adults. They shouted when they saw me and the dog. And happily met me at a calm, shallow part of the water to take their dog.
I rode the bicycle back to the apartment listening to DOOPEE TIME by DOOPEES. The sun had quickly dried me off. My hair felt extra curly. I was wearing my Marc Jacobs tee-shirt.
When I got back I made a large lunch with fresh vegetables and ate it on our porch.
Mooi!
I have read only the Slovak edition by SUGARBOOKS, 2011- the translation was not very good in my opinion. I did not like it , the rhythm felt unnatural when read aloud. Hopefully other translations are better. The pictures were simple but very likable.
Dick Bruna, SUGARBOOKS, s.r.o. (2011)
Miffy is still too young to ride a bike. But she is not too young to dream up how it will be! Both spheres - reality and dream - are painted in the vibrant colors that are typical of Dick Bruna. Most of the book is about Miffy's future bike ride. Especially remarkable are two pictures, having Miffy riding her bike through a thick forest, slices of her becoming invisible because of the vertical lines formed by the trees. Another picture differs from the accompanying texts as it shows a bike accident (as a possibility) whereas the text states everything went well this time. This prepares kids for reading comics with different messages communicated by words and images.
Our 6 week old loved this book- she actively was staring at each illustration. The bold, simple colors and illustrations are wonderful for her age. The rhymes make it fun for parents to read. As she gets older, the pages provide little details to talk about, like different colored flowers. This book will definitely grow with her and will remain an option on her bookshelf.
The Miffy series is me and my 4-y.o. daughter's new favourite book. She asked me to read it every night this past few days. The art style is cute and simple, the story is very enjoyable for a toddler to read.
Pure fluff, featuring a bike and cookies. Like, a bike fantasy / daydream as experienced by a mouth-less rabbit who is really a human girl. I had hoped this was about Miffy learning how to ride. Nope. Cute anyway.
this is obviously a lovely book. can reading books meant for 5 year olds in dutch count towards my reading challenge? i look forward to finding out if so (if anyone calls me out)
The simplicity is thoughtfully brilliant. Exact and perfect for a young toddler. This is my 21 month old's favorite book.
Miffy is the original and Hello Kitty is a Japanese rip-off!? There was a Hello Kitty store in the mall when I was young so with this news I am seeing my childhood through a new lens. When I first saw the book I thought it looked Japanese, turns out it is the other way around, this is the look of the Netherlands's Dick Bruna. Deceptively simple, well designed and cute!
