Psychic M.J. Holliday finds herself in a witchy situation...
When M.J. and her friends travel to a small town near Edinburgh, Scotland, to film the first installment of their new cable TV show Ghoul Getters, they find plenty of spooky action in a series of supposedly haunted caverns. But when they discover the body of a maintenance worker, the cause of death is reminiscent of an old legend involving a witch's wrath...

I love this series in the beginning but this book i didnt like so much. The thing that turned me off was the fact that I love the relationship between Steven and M.J. and in this book it just disappears when it was fine in the first three books. They became distant and attraction between Heath and M.J grows more since her and Steven has hit a lull and by the end of the book you dont know where her and Steven are in their relationship. Stuff like that just bothers me when there is no reason given just that 'we are suddenly distant but look whos hot and waiting for me and im just gonna jump ship and you readers are just gonna have to take it'. Gilly kept this book funny as usual but the part when it came to stubbing Steven out i didnt like at all.

I feel that M.J.'s adventure is getting scarier and scarier!! This one is very much horrifying; M.J. and Heath have a LOT of bruises as proofs!! But anyway, this one involves life threatening witch-curse on Gil as well as some horrible plans to cover up murders!
And on another note, it looks like I'm going to say goodbye to Steven soon because the relationship between M.J. and Heath is getting more serious. I prefer Heath anyway, plus he's younger than M.J. which makes it another plus because it's rare to have the heroine slightly older than the hero.

Ghouls Gone Wild(Ghost Hunters Mysteries number 4)
Mass Market Paperback
Category: Paranormal Mystery
By: Victoria Laurie
This is the fourth book in the Ghost Hunter series featuring M.J. Holliday and her sidekick Gilley. I had read her first book in this series but managed to miss the others I’ll have to catch up on them later.
In this the fourth book in the series M.J. is forced to honour the contract she and Gilley signed and go to Scotland to participate in a reality show Ghoul Getters ,with a fellow medium Heath Whitefeather. This is not at all what M.J wants Stephen seems to be so distant and she is starting to rethink their relationship. He works when she’s sleeping so she hardly ever sees him and going far away is not going to help matters.
M.J is faced with something she’s never faced before a century old witch Rigella. Rigella is said to haunt the village of Queens Close haunting the descendants of the village and killing them every hundred years. As M.J. battles the witch who controls the hundreds of dead souls there she is confronted with the evidence that Gilley is a descendant of a Gillespie who lived in the village and therefore at risk but the witch has come back early so who is controlling the witch? As they fight to find the culprit M.J. finds herself drifting further away from Stephen and a new closeness with her medium partner Heath Whitefeather.
This book is a scary thriller of psychic attacks, physical attacks from the beyond and a person behind the scenes controlling what is really going on.It is violent in parts but how else can the writer display the fear that all in the book have of the witch Rigella. Interesting characters and in fact I liked Heath so much better than Stephen who I knew from the first book. This book is actually a notch above her first book in the series “What’s a Ghoul to do?” An interesting paranormal mystery read.
Victoria has outdone herself again! For me, this is the best book yet in the Ghost Hunter series. It was hard to put this one down. It has action the whole way through, and was enjoyable to the very last page. It give you a bit of a cliff hanger with her relationship with her fellow psychic Heath. This wonderful adventure in Scotland, intermingled with the tragic and cruel history of the plague, some tidbits of "helpful hints" for ghost hunters, a possible new love in her life, and a scenario with a mortal teaming up with ghostly witches, makes this novel a "must read" for everyone! Gotta say though, I don't think she should think about a relationship with Heath....Steven is more her type, I think!
Interesting premise, but I find the characters annoying. Gilley needs to be killed off. He is one of the most awful characters I've ever come across. Weak, shrill, whiny, and fairly useless, he brings nothing but annoyance to each story. The main character, a spiritual medium ghost hunter named M.J., would be a strong character if she stopped making googly eyes at nearly every male she comes across. It's as if everyone she comes across is gorgeous too. Isn't this supposed to be more of a mystery rather than some cheap harlequin novel? Gah!
I've sat down and read five of these books to date. And I know I've only myself to blame for doing so. I keep hoping Victoria Laurie would grow as a writer. Maybe she will, but for now I'm not holding out for it to happen.
M.J., Heath, & Gilley have signed a contract to make a television show, Ghoul Getters. First stop, Scotland! The team encounters a very powerful witch with a centuries long grudge, which leads to some pretty scary scenes. I like how these books pull off cute, funny cozy mystery with some pretty intense and scary hauntings. M.J.'s boyfriend, Steven, is absent in this book which is too bad because I liked him. Though I also like where this is heading with Heath. :-)
King Ghouls Gone Wild In this ghost mystery M.J. Holiday, a psychic medium, and her best friend Gilley Gillespie go to Edinburgh Scotland. They begin to film the first episode of their new T.V. show Ghoul Getters when they encounter the most powerful spirit they have ever met. With the help of Heath Whitefeather, another medium, and Peter Gophner, the shows producer, they fight off the evil ghost witch and her sisters. But when the witch tries to kill Gilley it is up to M.J. to figure out who called up this ghost and why. This book definitely deserves a big thumbs up! It combines humor with a sad tale of lovers and love lost. The twisting plot line keeps you guessing until the very end. With a pregnancy, car accident, three murders, and too many ghosts to count, the drama is taken to the next level. Especially when Gilley discovers that he is one of the ghost witch’s targets, his overly excited and scared character really makes for an amusing book. The unexpected experiences of the characters really compliments the story. For instance when Fergus, a man that M.J. originally despised, saves M.J.’s life he immediately seems to be one of the good guys. But this assumption proves to be very wrong. Ghouls Gone Wild is not all about catching the ghost it also incorporates the emotions and complicated feelings of the characters. For example M.J. had recently grown apart from her boyfriend Steven, so when she finds herself attracted to Heath she is confused and has a hard time trying to figure out what to do. Her battle with her emotions is made even worse when Heath expresses his feelings for her. Laurie’s down to earth comical writing style that doesn’t hold back makes this an entertaining and fun read. Her choice of words gives the book a suspenseful vibe but still keeps it light. The first person narration gives a certain feel that you wouldn’t get if the author just told you how each character felt. My favorite part of the entire book was when M.J. and Heath where being chased through the woods by the ghosts and beaten with brooms. M.J. then finds a man named Joseph, hanging from the tree. Although spooky and gruesome, the imagery and the unanticipated connections between Joseph and the other characters in the book make it a real turning point. Another favorite part, for me, was when Heath and M.J. find out that one of the murders was self defense while the other was petty and cruel, both where committed by characters that had seemingly been cleared early in the book for their kindness and inability to kill. One thing that I would change is the cliffhanger at the end that leaves you wondering whether M.J. dumps Steven to be with Heath or tells Heath that she can’t be with him because she still loves Steven. Whatever happens I sense a rivalry between the two men. I really hope that this is not the last that readers will see of Steven, his character gives the book a certain charm and it wouldn’t be the same without him, its like killing Hermione in the Harry Potter series. Over all this book has earned my approval, I can’t wait for the next book.
I thought this would be a cute and harmless book, which it kind of is? Parts of the plot definitely reminded me of watching Scooby Doo, although here the ghosts are real (and constantly referred to as "spooks," and also ride on literal broomsticks, all of which for some reason I found stylistically unpalatable). The characters aren't particularly complex or nuanced (this one gets upset and shrill all of the time, this one is kind of grumpy but comes through in a pinch, etc). I think it would have been more fun if there were more Scotland-specific details; aside from the occasional impression of a Scottish accent, this could take place anywhere.
But obviously that's not enough to explain the two stars. The villain is a witch named Rigella, and we hear a bit about how she used to be a healer and was executed by a mob that blamed her for the bubonic plague. They also sexually assaulted and killed her sisters and her lover! The good old days. :) But throughout the book, Rigella is only treated like a nasty criminal. There's absolutely no sympathy for her, no hint that MJ, the narrator, has any concept of shades of grey, any kind of self awareness, consideration for other people's feelings... She treats everyone as if they exist only to meet her needs. Which, since this book is so basic, is true, and it's boring.
In "Ghouls Haunt to Have Fun", Medium MJ Holliday had been one of 4 mediums called in as an "expert" on what seemed to be "haunted" objects for a TV special. Heath WhiteFeather and MJ were the only true mediums of that 4some, and the producer came to them with a pitch from the Bravo network to work on a new cable show called 'Ghoul Getters', which would have them visiting some of the most haunted places in the world. This novel takes them to Scotland, and MJ's childhood best friend and business partner Gillie Gillespie comes along. Some spooky caverns below a particularly haunted street where gruesome deaths occured centuries earlier, thanks to the Bubonic Plague. A mob of angry townsfolk at that time had chased a witch and her sisters into the caverns to kill them, and the strongest had cursed the descendants of those who killed her and her siblings. The witch makes an appearance, and causes some scary poltergeist activity, including a maintenance worker's death in the caverns. MJ and Heath must find a way to stop her before she takes anyone else's life! This was a page turner! I'm not a big mystery fan, but I love this ghost hunter mystery series! There's some really scary moments, but the characters and the situations they have to deal with are what keep me coming back again and again! MJ is a strong female lead, and Gilly provides a little comic relief.. and he's just so loveable, even though he can annoy those around him. I like Gopher the producer, too; and there's a bit of a problem for MJ when she's dealing with some inner turmoil in her personal life. I figured out part of the mystery... but where the story goes and how things are resolved was very nicely done!
M.J., Gillie, and their new business associate Heath Whitefeather venture off to Scotland to film a series of busts for Bravo channel's Ghoul Getters. They are working with Gopher, who we met in their previous outing, on this venture. While at their first stop, the crew meets up with a super-nasty grounded spirit named Rigella who is the Witch of Queens Close. Rigella was a local witch whose family was murdered when she was unable to heal all of the town's residents from a particularly nasty outbreak of the plague in the 17th century. At her death, she placed a curse on the town--focused primarly on a particular street and the caverns that underly it--and has returned every 100 years at which times she claims seven lives (in return for the seven sisters in her family who all lost their lives) from the descendants of the families she holds primarily responsible for her demise. Unfortunately, M.J.'s lifelong BFF and business partner Gillie is a descendant of one of those families. The creep factor is higher in this story than in any others in the series thus far, and no member of M.J.'s team escapes a major ass-kicking from Rigella and the hundreds of other grounded spirits that occupy the region.
Aside from the bust piece of the story is the complication that M.J. and her team are committed to two months in Scotland. That said, she must leave her African Grey parrot (Doc) in a friend's care and, far more potentially complicated, she must leave behind her boyfriend Dr. Stephen Sable and come to terms with her growing attraction to coworker Heath.
The storyline felt a good bit more complicated, the characters genuinely menaced, and the stakes a good deal higher than in previous outings in the Ghost Hunter Mystery series. I thoroughly recommend it.
The Ghostbusting show is on the road with MJ, Gilley, Heath and Gopher in Scotland. An extremely malevolent ghost witch terrorizes the busters but at the root of the problem is a murderer and an incredibly ingenious gadget that allows ghosts to take form and hurt people. Also MJ and Heath become ill and are in intense pain when ever it is turn on. Gilley turns out to be the smarty pants who figures out the why's and who's but MJ and Heath are the muscle that finally busts the ghosts. I have to admit that MJ's love life is what keeps me reading this series. Dr. Sable pursued MJ and just when they seem tight here comes Heath the handsome medium with whom MJ is becoming more and more attracted. Dr. Sable is drop dead gorgeous and has that adorable and sexy accent plus he is intelligent, funny and oh yah rich. MJ felt he was just a player and avoided the relationship for so long but when he became a partner in the business and was around all the time going on busts she finally fell for him. Now the good doctor is lecturing and doing his other job--heart surgeon---so he couldn't come on this excursion, and MJ is starting to feel a connection with Heath. Granted he is a medium so he has a connection that Steven will never have and this is Heaths primary job so he will always be around where as Steven has other interests that will always keep him separate from MJ. I hope there is another option out there for MJ because Heath just seems too convenient and not husband material.
This time the gang are in Scotland filming the show Ghoul Getters, when they come across a lot of paranormal activity, and some very angry witch ghosts. Usual murdery, mystery, ghosty story.
This book was still fun to read but a couple of things annoyed me. Gillie, as much as I like that him and M.J have been besties since forever, is sometimes so outrageously annoying. I mean, he set the whole idea up, for the money of course, and spends the whole time being whiny and scared.
The other thing was the Steven/Heath thing (don't read this if you don't want spoilers).
Ok, I get that M.J and Steven were having little problems, and he had to stay behind to work, but they are still together. I also get there are sparks with Heath. Either way I don't really care. What annoyed me was the whole "Oh my phone got burned with all of my numbers so now I won't be able to call Steven". I mean many of the other books have mentioned Gilley calling Steven - wouldn't have been so hard to get the number off his phone! Blah
I initially read this series out of order. I've recently been rereading it in order, and it's even more fun! The Ghost Hunter Mystery series is perfect for when you want a light read that's both a mystery and an adventure -- and when you want something that will make you smile a lot.
My old review: Even though I'm reading the series completely out of order, I'm loving Victoria Laurie's Ghost Hunter mystery series. In this mystery, MJ and crew are in Scotland to film some haunted caverns outside of Edinburgh. A ghostly mystery from the past is related to a present-day mortal danger. The setting and characters would have been enough to make this an enjoyable read, but I was pleasantly surprised when the mystery resolution turned out to be so satisfying as well.
Oh my this was one of the scariest books I've ever read. I know that sounds trite but it's totally true. Rarely does anything I read (or even see in movies) actually scare me but this book gave me chills and damn near heart-palpitations. Geez Ms. Laurie can really write a scary scene or ten.
This is the best book in the series (so far of course). I can't wait to see where Ms. Laurie takes M.J., Gilley and Heath next.
It could be me, but this one was just an okay read. Normally I love anything Victoria Laurie writes but this one seemed to be a big of a slog to read. Not bad, just not what I usually feel about her reads.
I’m so glad I picked this series up again after first discovering (and falling in love with) this author when I was a teen. Did I ever think on my Hawaiian vacation that I’d skip the ocean and the pool and pina coladas to stay in and read about ghost hunting?! ONLY FOR MISS MJ HOLLIDAY! Victoria Laurie, you’re incredible, this book is incredible, the pace is incredible, the story, the atmosphere, I love everything about this book and it’s so so so nostalgic.
M.J. Holliday can communicate with the dead and that ability has led her to a role in a cable TV series called "Ghoul Getters". For the first show M.J. and friends travel to Scotland to investigate some haunted caverns. This will be one of the toughest gigs M.J. and fellow medium Heath Whitefeather have ever been on - someone has let loose the witch that haunts the caverns and she is determined to harm the ancestors of the people that killed her and one of those ancestors is a dear friend of M.J.
"Ghouls Gone Wild" is the fourth book in Victoria Laurie's Ghost Hunter mystery series - a series that gets better with each book. The series seem to have really hit its stride now that it focuses on the Ghoul Getters TV series. M.J. is a great character - talented, a good friend (if a bit of a diva), and willing to face danger if it means helping ghosts to cross over. I'm glad the book focuses more on her relationship with Heath rather than Stephen because Stephen never quite seemed to fit into the series. I'm also glad that Laurie didn't have M.J. immediately switch her affections to Heath but instead fret over her growing attraction to Heath while trying to be loyal to Stephen. Her friendship with Gilley also helps shape her character as it does Gilley's - I love the fact that he is afraid of ghosts! The paranormal aspects are well done (with some cute nods to Harry Potter) and the book is a nice mixture of scary events in the past intermingling with scary events in the present. The mystery aspects are also well done - while it is not too hard to figure out who the bad guy is there are still some twists that the reader won't see coming. The book has plenty of deliciously scary moments that will make readers glad they aren't the ones doing the ghost hunting.
"Ghouls Gone Wild" is a nicely done paranormal mystery.
I enjoyed this book, it is definitely action packed. I'll start with what I'm not fond of, first even though I wasn't crazy about Steven, I think he deserved a little effort in this book. Second I have not been and really don't expect to be a fan of Gilly, I couldn't stand when my kids whined never mind listening to it from an adult. Now that being said what I do like is the addition of John, Kim and Meg, although they didn't have huge parts I think they added some stability to the characters. I like that MJ is strong with touches of fear, that makes her a little more human. I like Heath, I think he needs to put his foot down and stand his ground a little more, but he is likeable enough. I do admit as much as I can't stand Gilly's whining, he did deserve to do some since he seems to be the target of the witches. The mystery was great with lots of twists that kept me guessing as to what was going on, I really stayed on the fence until the reveal. I will definitely continue on with this series.
This is Victoria Laurie twisting her Abby psychic eye plots up a notch. In the Physic Eye mystery series, Abby (who gives psychic readings) has spiritual help from the other side to solve mysteries. In these Ghost Hunter mysteries, M.J. and her friends are ghoul hunters making a TV series to entertain the public with ghosties and ghoulies to scare you silly--and M.J. hopes to help to send grounded spirits to the other side. M.J. is a tougher character than Abby and the stories are scarier and most suspenseful. Their TV series takes them to Ireland to investigate a haunted mansion, wicked witches who return every 100 years with a curse, and the psychic agony of hundreds of people who died from the plague. Lots of actions and ghost-busting technology but not my favorite story. I like a little more character development and interesting setting. This isn't the first book in the series, so maybe I missed some important ground work.
Technically this series is paranormal mystery rather than PNR/UF, but this category is often included as a subcategory of PNR so there you go. The series is about M.J. Holliday, a psychic medium & ghost-buster and her flamboyantly gay business partner, Gilley. In each book M.J. and Gilly tackle a new haunting problem of some sort. In this book, they're in Scotland shooting a ghost-busting TV show when they run into the strongest and scariest ghosts they've ever encountered - a witch and her sisters who were murdered during the Black Plague. These ghosts aren't just causing mischief - they're out to avenge their deaths by killing the descendents of their murderers, of which poor Gilley just happens to be!! Can M.J. shut-down the witches and save Gilley before they get to him?
I love this series and this book was one of the better ones so far! I'll definitely be picking up the next one, "Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls" scheduled for release December 2010.
I really enjoy this series. I don't like, however, how the author does not really explain the progression of the relationships in the book. M.J. is suddenly Dr. Sable's boyfriend after book one. Admittedly, you can tell things are headed that way in book one, but it obvious in book two that things have progressed and have been going on for awhile. No explanation of why M.J. decided to go with the Dr.
In book four (this book)you can tell her attraction to fellow psychic medium, Heath, is growing. However, in book five (which I read before four), she has broken up with Dr. Sable. Obviously, hints are in the books regarding the way thing are heading - I'd just like more explanation regarding the relationships.
I enjoy the mysteries and ghost busting, though. In found this series entertaining on the whole.

Having successfully dehaunted the Duke Hotel in San Francisco and survived the demon that came through the portal, M. J., Gil, and Heath are ready for a rest. But the producer has a new idea - Ghoul Getters - a reality show for Bravo in which they travel the world, busting ghosts internationally.
Their first stop is Scotland, where they deal with leftover evil from the plague, a really wicked witch and her sisters, and some very real murders. With soem guidance from Heath's grandfather, the already departed Sam Whitefeather, and Gil's super computers research skills, they are able to find the trail to who let the witches out and how to put them back. Plus there's that little problem of Steven still being in the states and Heath being very close by that M. J. needs to solve.
This is the second of the Ghost Hunter Mystery series that I've read, and the last. I was a bit ambivalent about picking this one up (I don't remember disliking the other Victoria Laurie book I'd read, but don't remember being particularly impressed, either). I stuck through this one because I wanted to see how the mystery was resolved (not too shabbily, I'll give the author that). But I either didn't like or just didn't care about any of the character (not the mains, not the minors, and especially not M.J.) and was a bit annoyed at the way the author would decide a certain character was good and another evil even though she had people from both sides doing things that ought to have fallen into the shades of grey area.
This book was charming, clever, and addicting. I read this and never put it down. *whisper* I even read it through class today.
M.J. and her ghostbusting crew go to Scotland for their TV show and talk about spooky. So many grounded ghosts on one street and a can you believe it...witches! Not only does M.J and Heath have to deal with ghosts, but have to deal with ghosts that used to be witches.
Constantly moving, only sleeping when exhausted, this team go after the big guys and you have know choice but to follow because they've spell bound you into never putting the book down.
I strongly suggest this book . . . but of course, read the three ones before this.
M.J. and friends go to Scotland to film a new addition to their tv series. While in this small town, they discover a terrible crime and evil that happened years ago. Several families in this small town killed four sisters who were reported to be witches, and left them to die. The witches come back every 100 years and claim a victim from the families. For pay and retribution they select one of the descentants of the family. Gilly has found out his family comes from this small town and he is being targeted by the witch to pay the price for that year. The only problem she is 35 years early. Why is she terroroizing the village early and what called her back?
The Gang finds themselves in Scotland where a evil witch is coming after members of a mob that killed them among those Gilley. M J does all she can to keep her beloved best friend safe from harm. A relationship is building between Heath and M J and M J isn't sure what to make of it with her bf back in the states.
What an incredible journey. I was beginning to think the Witch was going to get them in a not good way. I was so happy when they were able to ghost bust. The book really left me wondering what was the status of the relationship with Steven, M J and Heath, as he showed up to talk to her. What a cliff hanger of an issue.

Ghoul Getters is just getting started as M.J., Gilley and the gang arrive in Scotland to start shooting. I'm still missing Steven after his departure in the previous book but, unfortunately, we can't always get what we want. Slowly, but surely, Heath is starting to grow on me. I absolutely adored the M.J. and Gilley relationship in this one and I envy it at times. I hope Ms. Laurie continues to add bits to this as the series progresses. As with the last three I tore through this like there was no tomorrow and I enjoyed it just as much.
This book is really upsetting. To the point that I couldn't enjoy the story as a whole. I don't like main characters who cheat on there partners. I don't like adultery, PERIOD. I try to stay away from books that include it. I keep telling myself that it's impossible slap MJ upside the head repeatedly for her actions, but I Can't help it. I really really really want to. Oh, and I never really liked Heath from the time he showed up, I knew he was trouble. By the end of the book, I could not even revel in MJ's forthcoming misery. I was too pissed. My heart bleeds for you Steven. arrggggg...
OK where's the next book.

Book 4 in the Ghost Hunter Mystery series. I'm not sure if its me or what but I think these books get better and better. This is yet another one set in Scotland. (What can I say I love Kilts and bagpipes!) And this one has a nasty ghost of a witch. I flew through this book quickly because once I started reading it I had a hard time putting it down. I definitely recommend this series if you like mystery's with a paranormal twist!
