Used by more than one million students around the world since its original publication, this introductory philosophy text makes accessible a wide range of philosophical issues closely related to everyday life. Emphasizing personal and immediate questions, the authors approach introductory philosophy through basic human questions rather than focusing on methodology or the history of thought. The text presents vital questions of contemporary interest in an overall framework of enduring concepts, interweaving coverage of various topics in art, history, and education. It covers a variety of types of philosophy in depth, and both western and eastern perspectives are represented. Ideal for students who have no background in philosophy, Living Issues in Philosophy, 9/e simplifies technical language wherever possible; unfamiliar terms are clearly defined upon first appearance and in the end-of-chapter glossaries. Additional pedagogical features include exercises, chapter summaries, and annotated bibliographies at the end of every chapter. The text also features photo biographies of major philosophers and short excerpts from philosophical classics.
This is a comprehensive review of major schools of philosophy down through the ages and well-known philosophers. One should approach this book as an overview and introduction to specific philosophies they would like to explore in more detail elsewhere. The real value in this book besides the broad overview is the plain-talk that allows most any reader to understand the basics of all the discussed philosophies. And that's saying a lot because many philosopical books are like wading through ancient molasses on the verge of complete solidification! Academics only need apply.
Not me and probably not you, either. So this book is more approachable and can help one start to develop their own personal philosophy which is a stated goal of the book. The book is also intended as a textbook for a philosophy class, so there are discussion questions at the end of each chapter, handy for teachers, self-teaching students, book clubs, and discussion groups. The version I read was copyrighted 1964, so there were some dated elements such as referring to readers and humanity in general using only masculine words and pronouns. Women readers may want to seek a more recent version (1995, the most recent version I found) or just think "man/woman," "he/she," "humans," "person," "people," "they," etc. when coming across a rather jarring sentence like "In the past men could expect to live under relatively fixed conditions..." The word, "people" in place of "men" would be more appropriate today.
Amazingly, a lot of the social, ethical, and moral concerns of the present time are discussed in the book but don't expect anything that has exclusively developed philosophical and morally in the last 50 years to be covered, but the author, Harold Titus, came close! A good start to understand the discipline in any case especially if you read the more recent edition. So in spite of the slight quaintness of the edition I read, I'm giving it 5 stars.
