Take a step back in time and visit with the exceptional mothers of famous men like George Washington, John Wesley, Benjamin West, and Andrew Carnegie. Catch a glimpse of the hearts and character that shaped such unique greatness, and enjoy portions of history revealed.
I was challenged by this book as I read of one mother after another who made incredible sacrifices for their families without complaint, and who were industrious from sun up to sundown during times in history when modern conveniences were nonexistent. Never underestimate the powerful influence of a Christian mother on her children, especially her sons.
While the book did highlight the sacrificial love of the mothers, I thought at times it leaned more heavily toward the admiration and care of the men for their mothers. Still an inspiring read.
Why do some children grow to be highly respected and godly individuals while others amount to nothing more than wayward miscreants? It can arguably be stated that it is because of the loving care, or lack thereof, provided by their mothers. This book is a collection of short biographies focusing on the Christian character of the mothers of famous men. The author states in the introduction, "My purpose in writing this book was not to extol a few mothers but to pay tribute to the countless number of unselfish, devoted mothers everywhere." This was an easy read but nevertheless full of valuable information about the mothers who shaped men like Booker T. Washington, John Quincy Adams, and J.M. Barrie. The chapters were short and straightforward and perhaps a little underdeveloped, but it was a good cursory look at "Mothers of Famous Men."
