The Message from Patmos

To the ordinary reader, Revelation is a very difficult book; it belongs to an apocalyptical literature to which the occidental mind is unaccustomed. It is far removed from our tastes and styles. The complexity of the visions becomes confusing and the meaning of its symbolism is not readily apprehended by those who have not gone deeply into the subject. We hope to make it both clear and interesting, and practical as well; for there is no book of the Holy Scripture however abstruse in thought, or mystical in meaning, or symbolic in presentation that has not its practical and spiritual values for the present day Christian. This we will find to be true of Revelation. But what does it mean? Is it historical, prophetical, or both? Is it past or future? Has it been fulfilled, does it deal with the present day world events, or with things yet to come upon the stage of the world's affairs? How are these questions to be answered?

I was not impressed. The author often presents his interpretation and states that it is obvious or undeniable but with little or no support. He shows a very dismissive attitude toward other views. He provides many responses to premillennialism but never addresses amillennialism. Much of the book reads more like a collection of footnotes in a study Bible rather than a commentary.

Clark is a contemporary writing partially in response to Scofield, which makes this commentary hold an interesting place in American history. His basic outline for the book of Revelation and his historical framing of the book is very helpful.

Decent and quite pastorally written postmillenial commentary that would serve as a good introduction to Revelation. I just wish he went into more depth. So much is passed over in silence or by simply repeating what Revelation says. Also has a lot of funny things to say about premil.

I'll be generous with three stars. I think that as a simple outline the book is pretty helpful. As a commentary it's just too thin and lacks any exegetical detail.

This is an excellent partial-preterist-postmillennial commentary on Revelation. My only complaint is that the exposition is too brief to be helpful in a few key areas.
