An excellent history of Mexico using Marxist historiography. Cockcroft appropriately anticipates the contemporary school of anarchist historiography with his discussion of the state in Mexico. Although a little dated due to purely Marxist economic determinist analysis, this is an excellent summary of Mexican history which agrees well with more contemporary analysis by authors using the Gramscian dialectic. I would recommend the relevant chapters to anyone focused on a specific period in 20th C Mexico, and this is required reading for anyone wishing to study the Mexican Revolution and the post-revolutionary state consolidation by the PRI.
