Just the thing to hook into globe study for young children. The endpapers map is very useful. It's ideal because it puts names and places in front of them that will considered in depth later on and gives young readers some stories about places and times that will stick in their minds. The book covers sailing from before the Egyptians up to Joshua Slocum in about 1900. Included are: Hanno of Carthage, Pytheas, Leif Erickson, Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, Captain Cook, John Paul Jones, and more (even Robert Fulton). If only there were more history books like this (the others in this series are almost exclusively biographies).
My Step-up Book set had two subcategories: "Do the Strangest Things" and "Meet...." This was one of my favorite of the second type, because from an early age I was interested in faraway times and places. I liked learning about the early explorers. Looking back, this book is entirely Eurocentric and would be so politically incorrect in today's world, so it's probably a terrible choice for a child in 2019, but I loved it back in about 1980!
Never have I been able to articulate all these great seamen until I read this book. Simply written. I wish there were more men listed, especially African
