Can a family bond stand the test of time?

Lady Tiliani Forelli is the epitome of the She-Wolves who raised her, an adept archer with a mind of her own. It is long past time for her to wed, but she deems each young lord who comes to bid for her hand lacking. With battles upon their border, and rumors of war growing louder on every front, Lady Forelli’s decision could secure her kingdom’s peace...or bring about its destruction.

Centuries later, history major Luciana Bettarini takes a summer job alongside her twin, Domenico, as a period actor at Castello Forelli in Italy. As incoming college seniors, this might be their last chance to spend meaningful time together, so she’s soaking up every minute. But when Dom’s theory that their lost Bettarrini relatives have traveled through time becomes potentially real—and they might be able to follow—Luci fears they’ll be forever divided.

Oh my word. How can I explain what this book meant to me? It felt like coming home after a long trip. Medieval Italy, the Forellis, the swoony men, and unusual ladies feel like home. Feel like family. My high school reading was marked by The River in Time series and to have one of my favorite publishers (Enclave Publishing) partner with the author who showed me the joy of non-magical (mostly 😉) fantasy had tears coming to my eyes.

Estuary was coming home. Finding family. Returning to the embrace of an old friend.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the author/publisher through Celebrate Lit. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

An intriguing time-travel romance!

Time travel tends to add a cool element to a book, and Estuary was no exception.

Both Luci and Tiliani were well-developed, sympathetic characters, and I enjoyed reading about their respective romances and adventures. Seeing Luci adapt to living in the historical time period was quite interesting.

The plot kept my attention given all the action scenes, battles, and high stakes. Estuary is pretty connected to Lisa Bergren's River of Time series. I read that series a while back and have to admit I probably would've enjoyed Estuary more if I remembered more of the River of Time series.

I wasn't a fan of how it seemed to me that only the women from the modern time or with modern beliefs were presented as being strong. I just can't buy that all those historical Italian women were wimps.

I appreciated how Lisa Bergren kept both the romance and language clean. On a side note, the cover is stunning, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the next book in the series looks like!

Overall, Estuary was an entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and time-travel romances.

Estuary is a novel that sweeps you right back to the vibrant and dangerous world of the Forelli's that we so know and love. Immediately, you are surrounded by characters that feel like family, and, once again, you are experiencing the sights and smells of medieval Italy through the amazing storytelling of Lisa Bergren.

I was so very thrilled to have had the opportunity to read an ARC of this book prior to its release date because honestly, I don't think I would have been able to wait until June. All opinions are my own, and I am not required to leave a five-star review... I'm leaving one because it was freaking amazing!!

I really don't have anything negative to say about this book. It just hit all the marks for me, and then some. If you have read the book blurb, you know that this story follows the lives of the next generation of Forelli's, Gabi, and Lia's children, specifically Lia's daughter Tiliani. You are also introduced to Gabi and Lia's cousins from the current day, Luci and Nico. They, too, have the ability to travel back in time.

Throughout the book, the story is told from the POV of Tiliani and Luci. However, you still get to see our beloved Marcello, Luca, and Audri, as well as Fortino and Benedetto. Not to mention the children of Rodolfo Greco. Specifically focusing on Giulio and Ilaria. (Giulio is shaping up to
be the new Marcello. Wait! I take that back. No one can replace Marcello. Just note that Giulio is a very F.I.N.E hero!) At first, it felt a little odd reading Lia, Gabi, Marcello, and Luca as secondary characters. We spent five amazing books (yes, I am counting the two novellas put together as one book) reading from their POV and having them be the heroes and heroines of the story. So, them being secondary characters did take a little getting used to for me.

As stated, Lisa's writing/storytelling is just phenomenal. Everything feels so real and raw when the characters find themselves in perilous situations. which, for the most part, was a good portion of this book. The tension that builds throughout the story as unrest settles at the Forelli's doorstep, and assassins are on the loose, is captivating to the mind. By the time you reach the end of the book, the situation turns so dire that a full-out war is only restrained by a thread. Our beloved heroes and heroines find themselves in rather difficult positions that leave us guessing until the very last second. Naturally, it wouldn't be a Lisa T. Bergren time travel series if she didn't leave you on a cliffhanger, desperately waiting for the next book in the series to be released.

Side note: I just want to say thank you Lisa for taking pity on your River of Time tribe and continuing this amazing series! I will never stop book pushing it!

As memorable and lovable as the original series. These characters already have my heart so fully. Also each the romances are so gosh darn sweet in their own right. Tiliani and Valentino being star crossed lovers, agh! I will be buying the second and third, immediately.

I was a little worried when I heard there was going to be a follow-up up series to The River of Time. I wasn't sure if it would prove to be as enjoyable, given that Gabi, Lia, Marcello, and Luca weren't in the spotlight anymore. I have to say, though, this book did not disappoint. I loved the characters, especially young Giulio Greco. I found myself just as immersed in this story as I was with any of the books in the original series. At first, I was totally there for Tiliani's pov, given that she's a bit more familiar, being Luca and Lia's daughter. Surprisingly enough, it didn't take long for me to come to love Luciana's pov just as much, maybe even more. Admittedly Guilio didn't hurt that.

Another thing I loved was that it was really fun to read characters that are my age. If the characters had been teenagers, like Gabi and Lia were in the original series, I'm sure I would have loved it just as much. Being in my early 20s, though, it was nice to see characters with a bit more maturity than teenagers would have. It's also really cool, because when I read the River of Time Series, I was the same age as those characters at the time. That's obviously more of a personal thing, but I enjoyed that aspect.

Overall, this book blew my already (mostly) high expectations out of the water. I can't wait for the next installment and may have a hard time finding something new to read for a bit. I'm afraid I may be slightly obsessed with this story and the awesome new generation of Forellis, Betarrinis, and Grecos, for a while. Now I just need 2024 to hurry up already.

I am SO excited to be back in Italy with the 'She-Wolves'. If you haven't read the River of Time series...now would be a good time to do that. I highly recommend reading that one before this one. You'll thank me later because every single book in that series is un-put-down-able and incredible.

Fast-paced, swoony and romantic in all the right spots, action/suspense, intrigue, betrayal, friendships... you name it-it's probably in it. Do not miss out on those.

Now that we're caught up...Estuary did NOT let me down. I got all those same vibes and even a level of humor that was really fun with our female main character.

I love the historical aspect of this book. I come away learning so much about this time period-which isn't one I read about a lot but wish I could find more of.

I cannot wait for more from this series and will be first in line for anything coming from this spin-off series. After finishing this book I 100% want and need more of it!

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Content/Trigger: Time travel, family problems/loss, war violence (some injuries are mildly described), kidnapping/capture, history rich, kisses.

ESTUARY is the start of a new spin-off series from Bergren's other time-travel novels. The characters are likable and easy to relate to and the setting interesting as two siblings travel back in time where some distant cousins have made their home. There was plenty of adventure, some fighting, mystery, an inspirational element and romance.

I really liked both Nico and Luci as well as Tili. The story is told from the two young women's POVs (Luci and Tili). They both end up having quite a bit laid on their shoulders as they seek answers and the direction their lives should take. I liked seeing the time period through both of their eyes and how the way was paved from Tili's mom and aunt for these girls to be strong and somewhat independent when at the time women were expected to be more subservient to the men. The romance was slowly developed and definitely a strong aspect of this story. It was also sweet and I liked the relationships that developed. The faith element was weaved throughout. The plotline was engaging as there wasn't a whole lot of downtime before someone was trying to cause trouble. I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next for these characters. Just be warned that there is a bit of a cliffhanger. There's a tough road ahead for them and for peace.

I also had a few things that I thought could have been done a bit better. There were several phrases that were redundant or repeated making it seem like there wasn't enough substance and so the same information, thoughts or questions had to be repeated to make up for it. I would have liked a bit more immersion in the time period with more explaining who everyone was, as I did have some issues keeping names straight, and overall more descriptive details. There were a few things that seemed too easy in a few of the fights and the part with assassins (how could some people be in so many places in such a short timespan without people (particularly of this time period) catching on sooner and doing something about it?).

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was an overall enjoyable start to this new series set in this time-travelling Medieval world. If you enjoyed the previous series from this author or romance-filled Medieval stories with strong heroines then this is definitely a recommended read.

Content: Some violence and innuendo, but would count this as clean.

Two years ago I binge-read the River of Time series in a week and a half. I was so sucked in and invested in the characters, the drama, and the world Lisa Bergren created. When I heard she was coming out with a sequel series I was beyond excited to return. And Estuary did NOT disappoint. I devoured it in less than two days. Fans of the original series will adore it. And I don’t even think new readers would be lost (though they would certainly want to go back and read the others immediately). Of course, I should have known it would end on a cliffhanger (as the first series routinely did). But where the first time I could just grab the next book right away… now I need to wait. My only “complaint!”

It was nice to have a little more maturity this time around of main characters in their 20’s. As much as I enjoyed Gabi and Lia before, sometimes their being teenagers drove me the tiniest bit crazy(being in my 30’s). Not so with Luci and Nico and Tiliani, all of whom I loved almost immediately. I appreciated the faith elements skillfully woven into the story, perhaps more-so than the first series. As Gabi and Lia were not raised with faith but gained it in their series, Tiliani was raised with it and Luci relies on it, both seeking direction and support from God. It was a nice addition right from the start this time around.

I’ll just be over here, anxiously awaiting book 2 and the answers to all my questions from the last couple chapters. Don’t let the thought of a cliffhanger cause you to wait to read this… read it ASAP so we can all impatiently wait together!

Wow! Lisa T. Bergren has outdone herself yet again! River of Time is one of my favorite series of all time, and I have been a die-hard member of the River Tribe since 2011! Torrent was the first book I ever pre-ordered from Amazon! I was excited when I heard we were headed back to Medieval Toscana, and Estuary most definitely did not disappoint! I loved getting to know Tiliani and Luciana, and it was such a joy to spend time with them and the whole new generation Forellis and Grecos! It was such an interesting experience to see our beloved characters from the original series acting as mentors and wisdom-imparters to the character in this book, loved it! This book brought so many fond memories from the original series, and I now want to go back and re-read them yet again! It’s such a special thing to get reacquainted with characters you have a shared history with!
One thing this book made me realize is how much I have grown as a person and in my experience of life in the 12 years since I met Gabi, Marcello, Lia, and Luca, as well as how much these books have impacted me through the years!
This book had all the action, suspense, intrigue, chivalry, and romance I have come to expect from Lisa T. Bergren’s books! Though, I must admit that the cliffhanger ending left me wishing that Oceans of Time would be rapid-released all in the same year like its cousins Waterfall, Cascade, and Torrent were! I cannot wait for book 2!
I loved Estuary and highly recommend it! You could absolutely start with Estuary, but I think the reading experience would be all the richer if you read the River of Time series first.

I gotta be honest, time travel is not my favorite genre. But Ms. Bergren tells such a compelling story. But Lady Tiliani Forelli and Luciana and Domenico Betarrini became as friends to me as I read their struggles, both political and of the heart. The drama and tension—and the stakes—were high, urging me on, page after page.
I may have developed a fiction-crush on Sir Valentino Valeri, and rooted for his romance with [SPOILER.] My skin crawled at Aurelio Paratore’s proposal, anxiously awaiting a solution and a way out. I held my breath when Luci [SPOILER.]
And I anticipated the twins’ return—or not—from medieval Italy.

Exceptionally well-researched and very well-written.

Italy in the 1300s with its complicated city-state political structure is so very difficult to understand and follow. These people were all Christians, even the same denomination, yet the fought and assassinated and tortured. One certainly can't say religion was at the heart of all this violence. People are just burdened with sin.

I enjoyed learning about a time frame I knew only a little about. I enjoyed the characters. I am not a fan of books that leave me hanging, even to keep my interest. I also don't know if I'll search out the next book if only to protect my heart from all the terrible things that factually did happen.

But I know a good book when I see one.

I was feeling the need for a fluffy read, so I listened to this while I worked.

I had read some of the previous series, and this one was very much like them in that I found the plot & setting engaging, the characters okay (but somewhat annoying at times), the faith content a little too here-and-there, and the romance, well… cheesy cheese whiz! 😬

I just can’t do sappy romance… or a lot of YA drama, and so a lot of this book just made me cringe.

But overall, the story was engaging. I loved the medieval Italian vibes. It was clean- only kissing!

I feel like this is a good, safe choice for young teen girls to read, but really I don’t think it has a whole lot of draw to me beyond being entertaining. Just not a personal favorite, folks!

Though it did end with a cliffhanger, so I kinda wanna know what happens next! 😭🤪

This book was a delightful and effortless read. Returning to the world of the “she Wolfes” was enjoyable, although it didn't quite match the depth of the original series, which I hold in high regard. Nonetheless, I found myself thoroughly immersed in the story and characters. The development of the romantic interests was particularly well-done, with nuanced dynamics and tantalizing tension between them. The moments of longing and eventual union were portrayed with skill, adding an extra layer of satisfaction to the overall reading experience.

This is basically Waterfalls 2.0, but with less romance (in my opinion, anyway) and more themes on trusting God with our lives. It's always hard for me to get into the beginning of a Bergren series, but she always has me frantically searching Libby for the next book in the series by each story's end.
If you have not already read the Rivers of Time series, you can jump right into this one without reading it, but the entire original series will be spoiled for you, so I don't recommend it. ;) Highly recommended for fans of the original Rivers of Time series.

I ADORE Estuary! It is every bit as good as the River of Time series, which is one of my favorites. The Betarinni twins give the story a fun twist that I never saw coming. The dialogue, the story, everything comes together so well and I just want to read it all over and over again. Looking forward to more books in the series!

What an incredible start to a new time-traveling series by Lisa T Bergren! I have not read the River of Time series so now I need to go back to her first time-traveling series to get the background scoop. My lack of previous knowledge about the Betarrinis and Forellis did not interfere with my understanding of the plot or my complete enthrallment with the book and the characters. The backdrop of 1372 Toscana, Italy was beautiful, dangerous, and engaging. The history of medieval Italy and the constant warfare among the city-states were fascinating to "live" through as first person voices of present day Luciana and 1372 Tiliani guided the story. The battle scenes were realistic and action-packed, the romance slow and tender, the faith thread present and grounding.

And the characters! Luciana is careful but fearless in her loyalty and Domenico, her twin, is bold and passionate. I loved the fierce warrior brother-sister duo Giulio and Ilaria and can't wait for what will happen next with them. Valentino was a swoony hero - mighty warrior in battle and loyalty yet gentle and compassionate as a healer. Tiliani and Valentino are star-crossed lovers from warring clans while Luciana and Giulio (and Domenico and Ilaria possibly, though we haven't seen a whole lot from these two) are star-crossed lovers from different time periods. The ending is a cliff-hanger and I'm bouncing on my toes for the next book to release!

If her Gifted series is any indication of what's to come, I'm totally excited about the adventure that will come my way in medieval Italy through this series. I received the book from the publisher via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Fast-paced, dual-timeline with heart-pounding battles and sweet, slow-burn romance!

Story is told through the viewpoints of Luciana Betarrini from present-day and
Lady Tiliani Fortelli from 1300s Italy.

At first I got a little tongue-tied with all those Italian names, but after I got all the characters straight in my head, things took off! So thrilling following twins, Domenico and Luciana, on their quest to find out what happened to their relatives who seemed to have disappeared without a trace.

Highly recommend if you love time travel and historical fiction. Beware— there is a cRaZy cliffhanger!!! Already anticipating the next book, and this one hasn’t even released yet.

Exciting start to the Oceans of Time series. I received an eARC to read and review.

Genre: Christian Fantasy, Romance
Format: ebook arc
Release: June 2023

This is an arc that I received as a gift from the publisher and author, but my review is completely honest and entirely mine.

𝚜𝚢𝚗𝚘𝚙𝚜𝚒𝚜
After their cousins’ disappeared, Domenico becomes convinced that they’ve time traveled. His twin sister, Luciana, isn’t quite as certain. Still, they travel to Italy for the summer so that Nico can look into this mystery. While sneaking along their ancestors’ tombs, they discover a set of handprints painted inside. Like any curious person would, they placed their hands on the stone. Suddenly, they’re in 1300’s Italy. After finding their cousins, Gabriella and Evangelia, Nico and Luci must quickly learn the ways of their family’s Castello in order to avoid death. Will they choose to follow their hearts and stay with the people they love whilst risking their lives, or will they choose to return to safety and travel back to the 21st century?

Daughter and niece of the infamous She-wolves, Tiliani is anything but an average Medieval maiden. She’s well beyond marrying age, having deterred most men because she insists on fighting alongside them, and, like her parents and aunt and uncle, she believes in marrying for love. Which is why it was such a shock to learn that her father gave the enemy, Aruilio, permission to court her. Will she choose to wed Aruilio for the sake of her Castello, or will she risk her family’s safety for the love of another?

Okay, so normally, I don’t think I would have picked up this book. Not because it doesn’t sound interesting, but because I’m usually deterred from books with people on the covers. I am SOOOOO glad, I didn’t let that stop me. This book gives so many Outlander vibes, but 𝒸𝓁𝑒𝒶𝓃 Outlander vibes. 👌🏻 The Dual point of view was so much fun. Luci’s modern-day narrative so wonderfully juxtaposed Tiliani’s 1300’s narrative. There were several moments where I laughed out loud. There were even more moments where I swooned. Guilio? Hello! This book now officially has my favorite book couple.

Thank you so much to Enclave Publishing and Lisa Bergren for allowing me the honor o f reading this arc. I am definitely preordering the hardcover so that I can have a physical copy of this book.

If you're going to judge a book by it's cover, you'd do well choosing that option with this book! This book is actually a quick read, but I was on full time grandma duty which lent very little time to reading for the whole week.

Having only read the author's contemporary stories, I wasn't sure what the transition to fantasy would be like. I know she's written in this genre in the past, I just hadn't read it. Turns out, the author is one of those people who can smoothly transition from one genre to another.

While this would probably be considered general fantasy, I think it fits well with ya fantasy. Really, anyone who enjoys the genre and time travel will want to pick it up.

In present time we meet Nico and Luci, college age siblings, who are in Tuscany for the summer. They know about some family members who disappeared, but none of the family knows what happened. Their search leads them to some crazy times ahead!

Then we're immediately thrust into 1372 Toscana where we meet Lady Tiliani Forelli and her family. It was impressive to see this time and place come alive through the author's writing! You could feel the tight bond the family had even though they were a mishmash of members. I really loved seeing them through Luci's eyes. It's that tightness one dreams of when they've never had it.

SO many things happen along the way through the story. The family and those who live at the castle are on the brink of war. Events keep popping up to throw the Forelli into a bad light to the cities around them. People being held for ransom, forbidden love, new love, the wisdom and strength of the She-Wolves, and hard choices come up for each of the characters. There's also a pretty fascinating twist with some of the family members.

Thankful that there's a good thread of faith in the story and the wisdom shared by Gabi and Lia with Tiliani and Luci.

The only cruddy part of this book? Having to wait for the story to continue in the next one! The end is one heck of a cliffhanger. GAH!

*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.

If you loved The River of Time series by this author buckle up, because there's a new She-Wolf in the pack! The first book in The Oceans of Time series does not disappoint. I loved every minute of it! I loved every character in it(well, not the bad guys!).

Luciana Betarrini and her twin brother Domenico have wondered for a year where their cousins disappeared to. Nico thinks he knows the answer, but it is so far-fetched and impossible...isn't it? When Nico and Luciana find themselves 700 years in the past Luci is ready to return home. But Nico is excited for the prospects this new/old world can bring. Fighting battles and being kidnapped is not Luciana's idea of fun and she is ready to return to her world except that she's becoming attached to her family. Being a part of a loving family is something that Luci and Nico have not experienced in several years. And then there is the handsome knight Giulio Greco who captures Luciana's attention like no other man has been able to do. Tiliani Forelli's family is hoping that she will marry Aurelio Paratore to bring an alliance to their two countries. Not everyone is in favor of this union though and intrigue and danger lurk around every corner.

So so good! I loved The River of Time series and to be able to see how Lia and Gabi have faired was such an exciting prospect to me. I devoured this book and have found myself missing the characters after closing the last page. Which, by-the-way, leaves us on a cliffhanger gasping for answers!

How soon til the next book comes!

I was so excited to read this first book in the latest trilogy by Lisa T. Bergren. I really enjoyed her River of Time Series and was thrilled to know that there would be 3 more books to come in the Ocean of Time series. I rarely pre-order a book in advance of publication, but this time I was happy to. There is some time between when the two series are set, but readers of the first series will be delighted to re-discover the "she-wolves" and their progeny.

Time has moved on since the days when the black death threatened to wipe everyone out but times which had become peaceful now seem unsettled. When twin brother and sister cross through time to search for their relatives who had disappeared off the face of modern day earth , exciting things were bound to happen. I couldn't put the book down until it was done and then all I could do was wonder how long fans will have to wait for book number two!

Estuary is what I would call a clean romance geared to a young adult but still very interesting to this senior citizen. It was fascinating to watch the younger leads adaptingvto their new circumstance. They moved from being quite childlike in many respects to being mature adults as the story moved on. I can hardly wait til book 2 surfaces.

How soon is too soon to re-read? Estuary is an incredible sister series to the timeless River of Time volumes. As much as I enjoyed catching up with favorite characters, the new cast quickly captured my heart. Strong She-wolves who know their own strengths and who follow the Lord's guidance to their partnering Knights. I now must find a way to travel through time myself so I do not have to wait for the release of book two.

Update 3.22.24: I enjoyed the story even more the second time. It's so much fun to follow the adventures of the new generation of characters while nostalgic to meet up again with beloved characters from the original series and see how their stories move forward together.

Luciana and Domenico Betarrini are very curious about the mysterious disappearance of their family members from Italy. There are all sorts of rumors about what happened to them, and Nico is convinced they traveled through time and he wants to do the same to find some Medici treasure to bring back and make a mint on. Luciana is willing to go along with the plan if only to get him to shut up about it. They find jobs at a restored castle near the archaeology site as period players for the summer. And neither is prepared for what they find.
In the past, Lady Tiliani Forelli is the daughter of one of the She-Wolves. Her father is urging her to consider marrying Aurelio Paratore and forge an allegiance with their former enemies. Tiliani isn't sure about Aurelio but she's trying to give him a chance because they may need the alliance. Someone is dressing up in Forelli colors and attacking other families. Can they clear their name before all out war comes upon them?

For those who have read The Rivers of Time series, Tiliani is Lia's daughter. Lia and Gabi and their husbands are very much alive and are part of this story. If you haven't read The Rivers of Time series, you might want to before diving into this, at least books 1-3 (4 and 5 featuring the guy cousins are optional). If you plan on reading those at any time, this book contains huge, major spoilers. For those who have read the original, it will be fun to meet back up with the She-Wolves and their families. As in the first generation of time-travelers, this new generation finds themselves quickly involved in pretty much non-stop action adventure with touches of romance once they arrive in Medieval Italy. This book does not resolve the conflict going on with the other cities or capturing the people who are framing them, so that and the dilemmas of hearts going on between various couples are to be resolved in a future book. (If you don't like unresolved plots, you may want to wait to read this until the next book comes out.)

Notes on content:
Language: None
Sexual content: Luciana is captured at one point and her captors discuss how she might be good for childbearing. She is not attacked or anything, and the captors don't get crude. There are a couple m/f kisses.
Violence: There are some battles which do result in injuries and fatalities. Bergren makes her characters feel the sobering nature of war and the weight of taking others' lives. The good guys do not take pleasure in killing others and only do so in defense of self or others they are responsible for.
Ethnic diversity: Italian and Italian American.
LGBTQ+ content: None
Other: The freedoms and constraints women faced in Medieval Italy are highlighted. The Forellis are still grieving many they lost in a plague.
