A light breeze in the morning ripples the sparkling blue sea, as the quiet day unfolds under the Sun's warm rays on the Aegean coast until the guns roar. The Greek war of independence continues for the seventh year of 1827, death, destruction, massacres no quarter given and none received, the struggle unending the blood too. Jules Verne with new, better translations in English shows he was a talented writer not a children's author, since this story is far from that. The Greek people's vicious efforts to gain freedom at all cost and this is a prime example. Patriots who aren't, traitors that care for wealth not bothered by foreign domination, money gives them power and comfort, the rest of the Greeks can find their own salvation. Unfeeling pirates flourish in armed conflicts as affluence can be acquired by reaching out your grasping hand and nobody will stop you, too scared. A mysterious man the captain of the Karysta, a Sacoleva, a small Ottoman cargo ship during the 19th Century returning to his native village Oitylo in the Peloponnesus but why, in these treacherous times? His mother Andronika is not happy, hatred in her intimidating eyes seeing her only son, curses him to be accurate but why? A Greek by the named of Nicholas Starko, however can he be trusted... of course the villagers know him well and he is prosperous and the poor here don't care how. Hadjine Elizundo a beautiful , lonely daughter of vastly wealthy, but dubious banker Elizundo, meets French Lieutenant Henry (Henri) D'Albaret. It becomes clear they like each other a whole lot and the gentleman is a volunteer, like many other Europeans fighting in Greece, voracious rival Starkos is not pleased. Sea battles led by D'Albaret against pirates and Turks, reveals to the reader the tenacity of the Greeks and their allies interminable resolution to win. This ancient land the center of the earliest civilization on the continent a symbol of democracy, literature , philosophy and of course independence, must be this again. A well researched book about the savage, brutal war and how some take advantage for their own enrichment. Fine scenes of desperate ships fighting above the ocean surface around the Hellenic archipelago, in order not to descent below it. The novel may be obscure even to fans of Monsieur Verne, nevertheless quite interesting.

A novel about the accession to independence of Greece in the 19th century, seen through the story of Nicolas Starkos, a Greek pirate.
Romance is without much action, but the size of the characters and political events are very well treated.
That's a novel to discover another face of Jules Verne.

It was interesting to read a story taking place during the greek revolution but sadly many points were predictable and the many details and descriptions about the the ships and navy kinda bored me!

The first time that I read this book, I was 14 years old, or maybe younger. It made quite an impression on me back then ..

Many years have passed since that time, and I have forgotten most of the book's plot. I only remember that it was about pirates and that it took place on the trubled times of the Greek War of Independence on the Aegean sea. So, due to the positive memories I had for it, I decided to revisit this book. Here are my thoughts on it!

While reading the first pages of the book, I became aware of something that would continue until its end. There is lots of information about how ships work, nautical terms and extensive descriptions of ports, islands and costlines. Those were not as a harsh read as it seems. Maybe that's because I'm familiar with some of the things that Jules Verne was talking about, and so I did not lose my interest on what I was reading. I have to admit that they seemed to be quite unnecessary though.

Between those descriptions, Mr Verne shared some information about historical battles and events that took place during the times of the Greek Revolution. Those might seem quite interesting to a reader that has historical interests and some of them are also useful for the plot of the book. Then we, finally, start to learn some things about the main characters.

Do not expect to find something special on that aspect. Our protagonists are simple, one dimensional characters with clear motives and desires (except for the villain of the story). Their origins stories are interesting, but they were not enough for me to empathize with them. Yeah, in my opinion, the book fails miserably on that part.

The overall story of it, is one of its pros. It is simple, but entertaining at the same time. Lots of its parts seem to be predictable, but I still felt a strong desire to see how this thing ends. There are some twists on the last part, but do not expect to find moments like the "no, I am your Father" from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back ..

To sum this up, I thing that Jules Verne's: The Archipelago on Fire is a fine read, but you are definitely going to need some patience to get through some parts of it. After my revisit, I found out that I am no longer as impressed for it as I was when I was young. The plot and the characters seem to be too simple for me. I can justify Mr Verne for some of those cons. This is a short book and so, there is not enough space for a writer to create complex characters and unpredictable and engaging plots. But then, I think that he should have spent the space that talking about nautical terms and describing ports takes, to develop the characters of our protagonists even further. Not the best book in the world, but it deserves a read and who knows, if you are at a young age, you might become astonished by it, just like I was during my childhood ..

(26) L'Archipel en feu (The Archipelago on Fire, 1884) (1 volume) 62K words

The 26th Extraordinary Voyage takes place in Greece and the Aegean Sea. While most of Verne's Voyages are set at the time they were written, this one tells of (fictional) events happening during the Greek War of Independence, around 60 years before the publication of the novel. It is the first out of four historical novels within the Extraordinary Voyages (the others, all of them written during the following five years after this one, are "North Against South", "The Flight to France" and "Family Without a Name").

First read or reread?: First read for me.

What is it about?: On the 18th of October, 1827, a small Levantine vessel piloted by Captain Nicholas Starcos returns home to Vitlyo, an ancient village in the Peloponnesus, only to be denied entry by his widowed mother. At the same time Lt. Henry d’Albaret, along with many other young men from France and the rest of Europe, has joined the cause of Greek freedom in the war against the Ottoman Empire. While he is recovering from a wound received in battle, d’Albaret meets Hadjine Elisundo, his banker’s lovely daughter. They fall in love and make plans to marry, but Starcos, who holds a devastating secret against the girl’s father, demands her hand in marriage.

Although a historical novel is a new side of Verne, the author had already told a war story in "Michael Strogoff". Also, "The Steam House", even though it does not take place during a war, was rooted in a previous war, and Verne showed his didactic nature there by telling the reader many details about the Indian Rebellion of 1857. "The Archipelago on Fire" is also like that, being a war story and also an opportunity for Verne to tell the reader about the Greek War of Independence. In a modern writer, these asides would be considered strange, but as we know for Verne this is a feature. Ideally, the reader goes along for the story and also to learn something.

I have noticed a certain tendency in this part of Verne's career to tell stories with more dramatic depth. For example, in "The Vanished Diamond" there were some tragic consequences of the disappearance of the fabulous jewel. Here there's also dramatic depth in the story of Nicholas Starcos and his conflict with Henry d’Albaret.

I can't say there's a similar depth in the characters. I like Verne's characters, but he is not one for character development. His characters tend to be static. There's usually no hero's journey in his novels that leaves the protagonist changed or transformed, except perhaps for younger heroes like Dick Sands from "A Captain at Fifteen", who necessarily matures as a result of the sudden responsibility placed in his hands and the adventures and privations he goes through. So, in this novel, d’Albaret and Starcos do not evolve and learn new things about themselves. This is one of Verne's limitations as a literary writer, although on the other hand it leaves him free to concentrate on what he is interested in, which is the plot and the documentary element. After all, you can tell good stories with static characters, see for example the Sherlock Holmes canon.

As an adventure novel I thought "The Archipelago on Fire" was successful. Although it's not action all the time, it has the pathos that the story requires and the pace is good. Some reviewers of course complain about the historical digressions, but well, this is Verne, not Tom Clancy. On the minus side, the ending was a bit easy, in the sense that the villain allowed a situation that he had under control to get out of his hands.

The twists are not very surprising here, you see them coming, but I still read it with pleasure and wanted to know what would happen next. I also got an overview of a war I knew almost nothing about, even though two centuries ago it captured the imagination of many Europeans, who had sympathy for Greece's struggle for freedom, as the cradle of western civilization. Lord Byron, for example, was one of the philhellenists who took up arms in support of the Greek revolutionaries, and he would die in the war some years before the start of this novel.

The novel is mostly set at sea, as the hero is given a ship with the task of cleaning the Aegean of pirates. It's not the first time we have pirates as villains in Verne's novels, but here there's more focus on piracy than in any other of the Extraordinary Voyages so far. There's also plenty of strong women featured here, even though their deeds are not the focus of the novel.

Enjoyment factor: I enjoyed it. It was an entertaining adventure with a historical setting. At this point in Verne's career his most popular novels were already a thing of the past, but he was still very readable.

O sea. Me impactaron algunas revelaciones.

Y he aprendido mucho de barcos. Creo.

Greece, 1827, six years after the Greek Revolution has begun. The Greeks are fighting against the Turks who have been ruling greek territory for about 400 years. An obnoxious pirate comes between a couple in love, soon to be married. The pirate's mother disowns him, ashamed of his connections with the Turks. Ships are roaming the Aegean Sea, either fighting for or against pirates and enemy ships. Lots of descriptions of Greek landscape and name-dropping of islands.

This is definitely not one of the masterpieces Jules Verne is famous for. As a Greek, it was easy for me to follow details on Greek history and geography that Verne proudly uses to show his knowledge of the country. Yet, someone who is not familiar with these elements might find these details boring and useless concerning the story and the characters. I would not recommend it to someone who is not somehow involved in Greek history. Besides, the characters don't really evolve over the story. Predictable ending.

I have read this when I was a kid. I was very impressed not by the story. As it isn't the known kind of adventures that Jules Verne wrote but by the language of the book. I found this book and I re-read it and when I turned to the second pages to find out who translated to Greek, I found out that it was the GREAT writer Nikos Kazantzakis!
I'm so impressed! Great book!

Greece has freed itself from four centuries of slavery. As a newborn country, Greece is fighting piracy and slavery markets of the Aegean is a priority. Great Britain, France and Russia are set to put an end to the naval domination of the Ottoman fleet off the Greek coasts. Against a historical backdrop, in British-held Corfu, a naval adventure unfolds in the archipelago that is literally ignited by the firing of cannons and pirate onslaughts. At the same time, a French Lieutenant is in pursuit of the pirate Nikolas Starkos, who is seeking to find his beloved Angelina,

I knew nothing about Greece and now have learn a part of her history. It is amazing to me that slavery was in Greece. It was exciting for me to learn about the Pirates of the Aegean Sea in the 17th century, including the Greek War of Independence. I want to know more about this historical time. This graphic novel 'is based on Verne’s novel. It has been expertly written and the panels add to the story.

Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review or any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

DNF (Did Not Finish) Η επίμονη προσπάθεια που κάνω να διαβάσω κλασσική λογοτεχνία συναντά συνεχώς προβλήματα.

This adventure novel was first published in 1887, 137 years ago. Yes, it is old, but in the book, everything at once, very lively, colorful, and incredibly interesting comes to life as soon as you open most of the first page of the book and immerse in this great reading!
This is an example of classic adventure literature from the master of the literary word, beloved by everyone, Jules Verne.
This work is one of the historical novels by the author, dedicated to the liberation struggle of the Greek people against the Turkish yoke. French volunteers and even... sea robbers help Greek patriots.
I have read this book for a long time ago, read it with great enthusiasm and with full immersion in what is happening in the story, and I have remembered it forever.

I was between 3 and 4 stars but i will give it 4 just because I really admire the fact that before the age of internet Jules Vern could collect info on any subject and make a story our of it. The story is not very complicated but interesting and as always has a happy end. Touches a subject I had not realized ie that even in the 19th century people in Greece were sold as slaves abroad.
