Outdoorsman Andrew Keith relates three trips at unique points of his life: down the Mississippi River to New Orleans; through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, eventually to Hudson Bay; and through the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence Seaway. From the solitude of the deep wilderness to chance encounters with strangers who offer shelter or a meal, from windblown days exploring unspoiled islands to frightening spills in whitewater rapids, from the sight of wolves and polar bears to the scent of salt marshes and pine forests, Keith describes a geographical and spiritual journey.

I walked in to Drury Lane Books, Grand Marais, MN and saw this book on display. Ever since reading “Mississippi Solo” by Eddy Harris years ago, I have harbored a secret dream of canoeing the full length of the Mississippi River. I jumped that chance to read another memoir of my coveted river trip. When I found out that this book contained a narrative for three river trips, I thought I would just read about the Mississippi. However, as I started reading, I was pulled in to each trip. Ended up devouring the whole book in short order. Wonderful book. Highly recommended.
