Tall and skinny, with short sandy hair and freckles, Alexandra is a bit of a tomboy and not very confident when it comes to men. Could this summer be a turnaround for her?
Writer/Editor Kate Petty (born Katharine Chapman) was the innovative author of more than two hundred books for children, including fiction, nonfiction, and picture books. Her award-winning pop-up books with illustrator Jennie Maizels and her collaborations with the Eden Project in Cornwall, England, are among her most popular works.
Alex is the tomboy out of her friends and doesn't think she has a chance of finding any romance. She is entering the tennis tournament as usual and to her surprise, boys comment on how she looks different. She tries to work out who would be best to have holiday fling with but her heart has other ideas.
I quite enjoyed this and liked the fact Alex is different to the others. Petty did a good job making fun of the posh tennis families who invite everyone to parties and also portraying the awkwardness of your first period and how brutal brothers can be.
I read this when I was 12, and I think this series of books is actually quite informative and insightful for younger teenage girls. They cover real issues, real feelings, and real characters. I would recommend that most young girls, between ages 12 - 15, should give these books a go.
