I’m really surprised by the high ratings this book has received. I enjoyed the build up but found the end extremely weak and was frustrated by the huge amount of unanswered questions left open.
As a seasoned crime reader I know the formula old fashioned or rookie crime writers use and I also know that good modern crime writers are aware of the formula end either avoid or subvert it. Barton does neither. Basically this book follows the old formula that the writer builds up a few obvious suspects (in this case Craig, Janet, Reese) and the reader knows they won’t be the killer because it’s to obvious. At the same time the writer builds up other characters as friendly down home kindly honest folk who couldn’t possibly be suspects. And if you know the formula you know immediately that they did it. This story follows that formula exactly and I found it predictable.
There were inconsistencies. Why would Frances who was obsessed with bloodlines and the Thornton legacy have been tempted to pass off another man’s child as a Thornton? It doesn’t seem credible. There was quite a promising subplot about Adrianna being a child adopted under murky circumstances to replace a dead biological child. I was hopeful that it might prove to tie up the loose ends about Craig’s parentage and the all important bloodlines if it turned out the adopted baby had genuine Thornton blood which was why their mothers were so dead set on Adrianna and Craig marrying to restore the bloodline.
As it was that subplot was just wrapped up by saying the first Adrianna’s grave had been found. No explanation of her death or how the adoption came about or the background of the biological family of Adrianna and her blood sister Kendall who also features. It’s also completely implausible that the two mothers Frances and Margaret who are obsessed with bloodlines would have schemed to marry two children with no real genetic link to the Barrington or Thornton families to carry on their supposed bloodlines.
The end felt rushed and the various red herrings the author created, including baby Adrianna, were unsatisfactorily explained. Ending really let it down.

This was my first Mary Burton book but it won’t be my last! This story drew me in and had me hooked from the start. The story unfolded at a great pace and the cast of characters was enjoyable. The mystery and suspense was just what I was looking for- not at all predictable and completely eerie. I was hoping for a bit more on the romance side but the main focus was on the suspense of catching the serial killer. Still, the romance is set up from the start, things just didn’t take off until the end. In the end I wasn’t necessarily surprised by who the killer was but I hadn’t guessed it. I was engaged in this story the whole way through! I definitely want to read more from this author!
Women beware…There is a serial killer on the loose. So far three women have gone missing. There is the aspiring artist, high school senior and the stripper.
The authorities have a suspect on their radar. The issue is that this person is suppose to be dead. His name is Craig Thornton. He and his fiancé, Adrianna were to be married but a drunk driver crashed into them, causing Adrianna to lose her baby and sending Craig into a coma that he never woke up from. Now someone is leaving Adrianna a written message. It is signed by Craig.
Detective Gage Hudson latest case brings him to the doorstep of his former lover…Adrianna. He and Adrianna used to be a hot item. Detective Gage doesn’t believe Craig is alive but current evidence does have him starting to wonder. Gage will do anything to protect Adrianna, even if it means sacrificing his life.
Dying Scream is the third book I have read by this author. While I have enjoyed every book of Mary Burton’s thus far, I didn’t quite like this one as much. The plot wasn’t bad but it was the characters that I found lacking. I couldn’t find myself engaged in the characters. The relationship between Detective Gage and Adrianna was a gallant effort. I liked Gage. He made a good male lead. Adrianna got on my nerves. She seemed like she was better than everyone and when the time called for her to be strong, she wilted. Dying Scream didn’t leave with screaming for glee. Though, I do plan to check out Mary Burton’s next novel.
I've owned a copy of Dying Scream for a while and finally got around to reading it.
The prologue opens with a shocker, giving me a chance to understand what the killer's motivation is. Once we get into the first chapter, it swings around a different path.
Giving the illusion that its about domestic abuse, that Adrienne is trying to resettle her life and her husbands and his family are dead.
Unfortunately the synopsis says one thing, while the prologue reveals the card too easily. I feel like the author should've scrapped the prologue if they wanted to keep the mystery, otherwise reveal the twist in the synopsis cause the two feel mismatched in the story.
By page 100 I started to skim over pages, it felt like the author was repeating minor details, such as clothing, mundane human tasks and household items. There's only so many times I can read that throughout a book.
One thing that did frustrate me was the way flashbacks were done. I was always under the assumption that the number one rule of flashbacks was they were done in italics. Unfortunately this book doesn't do that, which means you'll read a present scene and suddenly your left re-reading a scene because you hadn't clocked that it was a flashback.
Because there was too many characters to follow, when the twist of the killer was revealed, I had forgot who that particular character was and ended up losing interest.
The final chapter feels too rushed, it's as if the author forgot about the twist and put it in barely 10 pages.
Than the epilogue was essentially a recap of the book in three pages.

The killing just won’t stop as a ruthless psychopath revisits his greatest obsession—but this time, a Richmond, Virginia, homicide detective is determined to stop him in his bloody tracks . . . An aspiring artist. A high-school senior. A stripper. Three missing women with only one thing in common—wealthy Craig Thornton knew them all. For that, they paid the ultimate price.
Review: I read the first two novels two years ago and I completely forgot about this last and final book of the series. It is just as good as the first two books from what I can remember. As always the suspense was superb. The mystery was also on point. I definitely did not figure out the villian. That came out of nowhere. The characters were on point. No complaints. I found it to be a well done, well written Mystery suspense.
I didn’t know this was a romantic suspense book when I first started it. I guess I really should read the back blurbs and potentially the spines. At least it wasn’t full of romance that overshadowed the suspense piece. Most of the book was pretty much cookie cutter but I admit that I had no idea who the murderer was or who had killed the bodies found buried in the yard. But the killer did make sense in a twisted weird kind of way.
3.5 stars. A decent read with a little twist at the end. Some unanswered questions though. I don’t know if it’s just the kindle version but the formatting was a bit wonky. It would switch POV in the middle of a chapter with nothing to notate the change.
OK book. The only good scenes were Tess Kier, Alex Butler, Jacob and Kendall Warwick scenes. I especially liked when Gage was with Kendall/Jacob scenes the best. I wish there was a scene where Tess & Alex eloped or at their reception (Epilogue). Gage is an idiot; his obsession with Craig Thornton being a killer overshadowed other scenarios. Then there's the fact he's willing to make the woman he supposedly love miserable just so he can charge Craig with abduction and murder. It was proven Craig may be a lot of things but he was NEVER a killer. Gage have been chasing the wrong person for years; the real killers roam free to do what they like never having to worry about getting caught due to Gage's obsession on the wrong man. Janet is a total bitch. Willing to throw Adrianna under a bus just because she discovered Rhonda and Craig have been making and selling forgeries. Why couldnt's she just tell the truth? I'm glad she got what was coming to her: death. She deserves it.

The plot twisted and turned and kept me guessing, but there were some inconsistencies that pulled me out of the story. For example, in one scene, the heroine was going through storage containers. She finished a barrel of baby clothes and was working on a barrel of books. Someone entered the room, and she put down the baby sleeper she was holding. I had to go back and re-read to confirm that she was supposed to be working with books. A small detail, but distracting, especially when there were several throughout the book.
Readers who like to read complex plots about sick, vicious villains will find this book fascinating.
About the book, When Craig’s widow, Adrianna, begins to receive cards and flowers from her late husband, she assumes it’s someone’s cruel joke. Then grisly remains are found on the Thornton estate. Detective Gage Hudson believes the bodies are linked to Craig. But the biggest shocks are yet to come. A psychopath has resumed his work, each death a prelude to his most cherished target. The only way to stop him is to uncover a family’s dark past—and a twisted love someone will kill for, again and again
A new Author for me, Very good, well written, I'll be buying more of this series, I highly recommend her books.
I dont typically read these kinds of novels, but the ones I have read in the past were all written by men so it was really nice to read one by a woman. It felt like it prayed on all of my worst fears in the most realistic way. The characters all had depth and uniqueness to them as well which I enjoyed. I was shocked that I actually couldn't put it down! The pacing was really good it was really captivating.
Our favorite characters are back again in this follow up book to Dead Ringer and I have been sucked in from the start. There’s no slow build up in this book. Kendall and Adrianna have had a rough life up to this point and they finally are feeling like they can move on. They each want to succeed in their own careers and they are starting to build a sisterhood from scratch. From personal experience; I can attest to how hard it is! The Colonies is a historic home that has been in the Thorton family for around 150 years and at last it is being sold to someone with no ties or relations to the Thorton family. Adrianna has had a rough couple of years. As she is tying up all the loose ends and releasing her emotional goodbyes things start to fall apart even more than ever. What are you supposed to do when the past that you’ve started to let go of won’t let go of you?! Mary Burton did an outstanding job on this book. I was shocked when I finally read who the killer really was! Great book and series to anyone interested in this genre!!
This has been an incredible series, and this book was no exception! A complex, twisted, suspenseful story that will hook you from the beginning. I have loved the characters in this series, the dry humor, unique stories, and the intriguing twists and turns that made it impossible to put down. It's definitely not a series that you'll want to miss! There's also another story in this series that isn't listed with the others. Christmas Past involves Nicole and David Ayden, and if you're like me and love this series, you are going to want to read it. If you haven't already read this series, I would highly recommend that you start from the beginning. It will give you a better understanding of the characters, the connections, and the dynamics between all of them. They're all absolutely fantastic stories, and you definitely won't be disappointed! I would definitely recommend this book, series, and exceptional author.
I would love to see so much more from this series! Hopefully one day!
While reading this book, I was thinking about this review. I was convinced I was reading an episode of Criminal Minds --you know, where you know who the killer is at the beginning and it's all about law enforcement hunting them down. I. Was. Wrong. I literally had no idea who the killer was until it was announced. That being said, I felt that once we found out who the killer was, the story went completely left. I mean, it was rushed and kind of unbelievable. I love when novels push limits, but it still has to make sense. That's my opinion though; maybe it does make sense, I don't know any psychopath killers to really know what would've been done/said. I'm rambling now but overall, the book was entertaining, some boring cliches but a good solid book nonetheless. I'd read another by the author.
Ok book, not good as predicted. The majority I didn't like. The only scenes I liked were Tess Kier, Alex Butler, Jacob & Kendall Warwick scenes. I wish there was a scene of Tess & Alex eloping or their reception party. Gage is an idiot; his obsession with Craig Thornton being a killer overshadowed the fact that he maybe innocent, that he may be being framed, & he's willing to make the woman he supposedly love miserably because of it. It turned out to be true: Craig Thornton was NEVER a killer as Gage thought he was, & he wasted all that energy going after the wrong person. Janet was a total bitch, using the media to frame Adrianna, just because she discovered Craig has been forging painting with Rhonda Minor, instead of telling the simple truth. I'm just glad she got what was coming to her. She deserved to die after what she did.

Adrianna Barrington has sold her late husband’s family estate. As part of the deal, she has to remove the family graveyard from the property. The foreman in charge of removing the graves tells her unmarked graves have been located. Detective Gage Hudson had been asking Craig Thornton, Adrianna’s late husband, about the disappearance of Rhonda Minor, a woman Craig had been associated with. Gage thinks Thornton killed her and now he wonders if she is in one of the unmarked graves. If one of the graves is Rhonda’s, who is the body in the other grave? He has to act professional around Adrianna but it is hard as he is still in love with her. Their romance ended when she decided to marry Craig. Suspicion buzzes around Adrianna but Gage knows she hasn’t killed anyone.
When I started reading this book I was really enjoying it, I was also interested at the story in the first few chapters, but towards the middle of the book I realized that I was not connecting with the main characters, I started to lose interest in the story, and although the ending was 100% unpredictable it just didn't stir anything in me,, it didn't shock me, it was like.. oh? It was him all along? (yawn).
I am disappointed because I was really enjoying the story at the beginning, but the writer kind of lost me along the way. I do recommend this book for a summer read or to pass the time.
As always, Burton is light on the romantic plot, though this one has more than most of hers. That said, it was still more tell than show. The murder plot was interesting and kept you guessing, but the culprit wasn't on my radar at all. I suppose that's both good and bad; in this case, I felt the red herrings were significantly stronger than real clues. The biggest drawback for me was the characterization, especially of Adrianna's mother She not only seemed to change based on the story's need, but seemed different than I remember in the previous book. All in all, potential unreached. 2.6 stars.
I love Mary burtons writing style and how she takes you straight to the story, while also giving you a back story to the characters and they wasn’t made perfect the had flaws which made them more realistic. My only complaint is I wish we got more time at the end to explore and enjoy finding out who the killer was, sometimes I find the ending is wrapped up to neatly and I found that again the characters got there happily ever after. But all that being said Mary burton is a fantastic author and I will continue to read and love her books
Unfortunately, this is the first book I read in this series. Even though it is a stand alone, I like to read them in order. I felt I was missing something between Adrianna and Kendall. The story is good and I didn't figure out the murderer before it was revealed, which is always a plus. I really liked Adrianna, she was strong but had a lot of stress on her. I loved Gage, he was caring within his role. I like this author and will go back and read the beginning of the Richmond series.
Like all of Mary Burton's books in this series definitely worth the read. I enjoy trying to figure these out before the story ends and in this case I had two different scenarios and one was partially correct. That's what I like about Burton's writing, I have had to wait til the end to get the whole story. I like most of the characters and story lines. Always just a little twist to shake things up.
I've been reading one Mary Burton book after another and so do enjoy them. Some I REALLY enjoy and some i like just because it have me something to do. The plot lines do tend to get tedious after a 9/10 books in a row. But Mary Burton know's her stuff and can always create an enjoyable experience, even if your jaw isn't dropping because you've seen the twist coming.
The same theme runs through Ms. Burton's books. There is usually a love interest, or they've been together before. Now, they want to get back together but don't know how to tell each other. Move on! There are three missing women with one thing in common. They all knew Craig Thornton. Adrianna, Craig's widow, starts receiving cards and flowers from Craig, who is dead. How can Craig be killing women from the gave? Or, is he really dead?
My first book by Mary Burton...I loved it...the characters, the story, and the writing....I enjoyed the chemistry between Adrianna and Gage and between Tess and Alex...this book was a page turner for me. I thought I knew the killer but I got it wrong...lol...I will read more by Mary Burton...my new romantic suspense author.
Mary Burton is one of my favorite authors and I plan to read each of her exciting, captivating, mystery stories. This is a story of women in danger. Many of her stories have darkness to curl your hair, but they all end on a positive note. Highly recommend her very well written stories.
I did not realize this was the middle of a series until I was about half way through it. I never found the first two of the series so I have no doubt I lost a lot of the subtext. It was decent for the middle of a series of which I knew nothing. I still have a copy and if I stumble across the first two I may pick them up and reread the set.
I've had this on my shelf for 10 years and I am not sure why it took me a decade to read it because frankly it was a page turner. When widow Adrianna Thornton begins to disinter the family gravesite she does not expect extra bodies. But Detective Gage Hudson is not surprised. Woman who had contact with Craig Thornton ended up missing. But Craig was dead himself. If he didn't kill these woman, who did? Adrianna out of jealousy? Doubtful. As other women go missing, Gage realizes he has to find the killer before Adrianna becomes the next victim. This was a classic mystery. It's graphic without being too gory. I figured out who the murdered was but getting to the motive was still interesting. A very solid story, entertaining without being overly memorable, solidly good, not great. Happy I read it.
One of those keep you on the edge of your seat page turners that you just cannot put down. This is my first novel that I have read from Mary Burton and I honestly cannot wait to read some more of her works. Fabulous use of dark humour and some great characters, what is not to love. Highly recommend!
