Hal Jordan, a fearless test pilot given the gift of a power ring, becomes the Green Lantern and protects the Earth against such villains as Sinestro and Sonar.
GL#16: Carol Ferris is abducted by the all-female race of Zamarons (coughyeahreallycough) in order to become their queen. She protests: Carol: You mean--leave the Earth!? But I can't do that! Zamaron 1: Then it is because of a man-creature that you do not wish to come with us? Zamaron 2: You admit you admire this creature? Carol: I'm in love with him! And he's not a creature--his name is Green Lantern!
GL#19: A little old lady, trying to phone the ASPCA, taps into GL's power ring instead. The explanation: GL: It seems she accidentally dialed a number that doesn't exist! But in doing so she put her telephone receiver temporarily in tune with one of the basic vibration-frequencies of my power ring! It was a freak occurrence that probably couldn't happen again in a hundred years... (Don't be tempted to try it or anything, kiddies!)
GL#21: Best editor's note ever. While fighting the super-magnetized villain Dr. Polaris: GL: A dazzling burst of light--like an immense aurora borealis*--blinding me! *Editor's note: a magnetic phenomenon, according to science!
GL#21: Marriage imperative strikes again. Carol prepares dinner for GL: Carol: I've prepared a special French-style dinner, Hal! I want you to be the first to know that father's decided to retire and turn over Ferris Aircraft to me...What a catch I'll be as a wife--for some lucky fellow! Hal (thinks): Woo--ee! She's starting to give me the business--using all her feminine wiles to get me to propose to her!
