Eric McCaffrey has come face to face with the developers of Battlegrounds Online. They have shown up at his doorstep. He's used to seeing those faces in the game, not inside his apartment.

He knew the game had been physically affecting him. Turns out he was right and Hastech wants to run some tests. Battlegrounds Online was designed as a training simulator for the military. They want to know why Eric is being affected.

In game, his avatar, Zag, is given more responsibility. Even after failing an Operation for the first time, he's put in charge of a large fireteam for a major Op.

Through multiple Ops, Eric has been mentally and physically changed. When virtual and reality collide, the game leaking out into the real world beyond Eric's changes, he'll find more than just his life is on the line.

Born and raised in the granite state of New Hampshire, Troy is a lifelong and avid reader of comic books and novels (mostly in the fantasy, sci-fi and adventure/thriller genres). The ongoing serial storytelling methods of comic books and television has always fascinated him and provided inspiration for his writing. He’s always had a love of creating and world building and dreams of someday seeing his creations expressed across all media: books, comic books, movies, TV and even toys.

When not writing, Troy can be found outside hiking, kayaking or out back at the bonfire with beer in hand. Don’t expect to bother him during football season, especially when the Patriots are playing.

KU read

This suffers a bit from "middle of the trilogy" syndrome - not quite enough plot for a whole book, but a clear breakpoint for when the next book should start. So overall, some bits dragged, but it was worth getting to the all action ending.

We last left Eric/Zag having started up pick up "in game" skills in real life. The ethics and morality of the game being used as an experiment are discussed, but Eric compartmentalises and whilst he finds it uncomfortable, we skate over an awful lot of it ...I can tell you that ethics would have us up against the wall if we buried any consent in an EULA, without any right to ask questions and understand what you are signing up for (can you tell I work in research?!)

Of course, when the plot twist arrives However, the end of the book left me a little unsettled and with so many questions. Which I guess is the design as the author wants you to read the next book. :)

I think I'll pick up the next one if it's still in KU, but I definitely didn't enjoy this as much as the previous ones

Books one and two were both good and interesting, enough that when book three came out I picked it up immediately.

Now that the corporation who made the game is talking to him, Eric is learning more about what is happening behind the scenes. Not a lot more, but some. They want to test him to see his physical changes, how his memory holds up, and so on.

But before we get to that we have a mission. Zag is a team member, and while it's a decent mission filled with stealth and creative thinking, I would give it a B/B+ at best. It's not supposed to be the best mission out there, just a reminder of what's going on.

The second and by far longest mission I won't describe. Nor will I describe the ending. What I can say is that I enjoyed the series. It's open world but with a stealthier version of CoD, Medal of Honor, Battlefield, etc etc.

The editing is good here, and the stats are well done and grow at a very slow rate, ensuring no one is overpowered. All in all, a fun series that I'm glad I read. 5/5*

It all fits the mold of the story, just. . .

Leaves something to be desired. The twist is not bad, not can it be called out as unexpected given the source material, it just leaves the story feeling meh.
