Hot, Bothered, and In Over Her Head! After finally dumping her no-good fiancé, decorator Rachel Fortier hightails it out of D.C. straight for Cajun country. But her grandma's Louisiana bayou cabin on stilts isn't quite the grand estate she imagined. Throw in a pet alligator named Useless and Remy LeDeux, the smoldering-eyed pilot angling for her family's property, and Rachel's in for a passel of trouble-especially since their chemistry is hotter than the Atchafalaya Swamp in July. With his Tante Lulu itching to marry him off and Rachel's rifle-toting grandma ready to shoot Remy the second he sets foot on her land, the sexiest bad boy this side of the Mason-Dixon Line will need a special kind of voodoo to convince Rachel she was born for the bayou. This book is rip roarin’ hilarious from the get-go! You will laugh so hard that your chest will be in agony, you won’t be able catch your breath for how much you’re laughing and your eyes will be red and puffy from crying so much because it’s so unbelievable funny! From mullet-head hairstyles to witchy ol’ grannies this story can only put you in the very best of moods. But this is no light and whimsical romance! The characters are exceptionally written and the romance just makes your heart skip a beat.

The story is set in Louisiana and you feel like you’re roasting there as you read, the Cajun men are sexier than sexy with their Harry Connick Jr drawl and somebody-kill-me-now charm! The secondary characters add so much fun and love to the story that you just can’t help but feel like you want to hear more from them--no filler here which is so refreshing.

As for the romance, it’s steaming hot as soon as the h/h meet –love at first sight! No stepping lightly with sexual tension build-up either. Remy and Rachel are two people you’d never in a million years think would have anything in common. She’s a Feng Shui decorator and he’s a retired air force pilot. Well opposites certainly attract here—they combust actually! Some of the things he says to her will have you melting in a puddle as he lays on the famous Southern charm and then sometimes he is so mean that your heart just breaks for Rachel which goes to show how great this story is.

If you want to laugh like there’s no tomorrow, say awww a whole bunch of times, feel like your part of this close knit family and read about some hot and sweaty sex then this is your next book :D

**warning: don’t read this book in public --you’ll look like an idiot sputtering while trying to keep the laughter in ;-D

How do you not love an author who has the same philosophy as you do? Sandra Hill says "I consider the Cajun backdrop to my books a character in itself." I have always loved it when the author can take a location and make it live just like one of their characters. It adds so much to the flavor of a book. I am a reader who values the unique and quirky, the off beat and the humorous, especially in a romance. These books are full to the brim with all that and more, with a little help from St. Jude, I'm sure.

When D.C. decorator, Rachel Fortier, found out her plastic surgeon fiancée had the big snip without telling her, that was the final straw for her. So, what's a half-Cajun gal to do but have a bonfire! Then she leaves taking one of his most prized possessions with her and heads for Bayou Black near Houma, LA and a visit with a grandmother she only recently found out about. Granny Gizelle is not at all what she expected and the mini-Tara home, well let's just say that wasn't as expected either.

Remy LeDuex needs to buy 10 acres of land from his witch of a neighbor, Gizelle Fortier, to expand his helicopter business. For some reason Gizelle has a nasty dislike for Remy, probably because of his father. When Remy and his brother, Luc, show up at Gizelle's door to have it out, he is struck dumb by the vision that greets him at the place. For a confirmed Cajun bad boy bachelor, he knows he has met his match, especially when she takes a look at the disfigured side of his face and doesn't bat an eye.

Sad to say, but the road to true love for Rachel and Remy is anything but smooth, but with a little help from Tante Lulu, St. Jude and the whole LeDuex family, it does indeed lead to true love.

Hilarious! I was sad to put this book down. Wonderful characters, story and writing. Something sexy about tall, dark, and canjun! Tante Lulu (aunt) was a hoot! Many of the secondary characters were just as colorful and really added to the story.

This book put a smile on my face. Another in the favorite category.

Wavering between 3-3.5 stars
This was much better than the first. In the beginning of the book h dumps her fiancee who is obsessed with her weight and appearances and goes off to meet her grandmother for the first time. h/H have a insta connection going that culminates into some hot times between the sheets and inst-love. Of course h's trust hang-ups and consequences from H's accident twelve years before get in the way. I did feel h over-reacted to H's confession especially since they had been together only two weeks but later on when they go into hiding they do get to know each other. Honestly, I was glad in the end when the h made the H work to regain her trust since he had put his fragile male ego before her feelings. All in all not bad.

Tall, Dark, and Cajun: An tantalizing and humorous contemporary romance book that will transport you into the wonderful magic of the Louisiana Bayous. This book is pure comfort and satisfaction, Creole Style. 5 stars! Donc très magnifique..WARNING: this book may give you the urge to smile like an idiot, eat lots of great warm comfort food, and hoot with laughter.

Overall Feelings
This is my first book by Sandra Hill as well as my first forage into this series. What a wonderful new experience it brought me. I was looking for nothing but a bit of fluff, a three star read at best.Yet, here I go and stumble on a GEM!

-Characters-

Rachel Fourier: Rachel Fourier is at a pivotal point in her life. We met her as she, with the help of her two amazing bffs, is burning every sodding peace of exercise equipment her now ex-fiance gifted her with. While he is not presented as one, I consider her ex, David, to be an emotional abusive partner. He played off her insecurities making her feel inadequate about her body. He gave her work out schedule, over 10 thousand dollars worth of vitamins and work out equipment. He's a class A jerk. When he does something she can never forgive. Rachel realizes that she is sick and tired of being...sick and tired! She dumps him and high tails it to Louisiana to live and meet her grandma. I really liked Rachel. She is not a perfect heroine. There were little aspects about her that i did not like, however, those little things I didn't prefer made her come alive. In real life we can't like everything about a person. Why should romance novels be any different? In the over all, she is a great dynamic character. She's got a raging libido, hilarious thoughts, and appreciation for the different. She was very vulnerable and laid it all on the line more than once. She got burned and bit more than a couple times in this novel but she didn't give up on love.

Remy LeDeux: WHEW, what.a.man. He is sex on legs wrapped in a big 'ol Cajun bow. He's got swagger for days and a boyish charm to him that is quickly endearing. Remy is a lovely hero, he is not some big brooding hunk of mystery. He is fallible and where's his emotions for all to see. Remy is severely scarred over half of his body courtesy of a bomb in Iraq during his air force career. He has naked pain from his disfigurement. Despite his scarring, he was not some mean and holed up brooding creature like every other scarred hero. He is just a vulnerable man who let it all lay on line when he met his match. This hero was so utterly refreshing and different and is easily in my top group of favorite male protagonists. How readily he communicated his emotions despite the utter fear that gripped him was one of the sweetest things I've read. It was such a blessed moment to read his reactions when Rachel didn't give a rats bottom about his scars! His sexy as all get body and lilting creole speak peppered with french and funny sayings was HOT! Sandra Hill knew what she was doing when she created Remy.

Side Characters
I wont go into detail to heavily because explaining them all would use up all my remaining characters. However, Hill has a jumble of amazingly complex and funny characters that add to the creole charm of this hot southern romance story. Meddlesome Grandmas, Sexy and Sweet Creole brothers, a cheese doodle eating Gator... The side characters are just like a big pot of Jumbalaya. Odd looking but fits together to making something delicious.

Setting
The book is set deep in the Louisiana Bayous. Sandra Hill paints a beautiful area that feels almost untouched by the subterfuge of the modern world. I felt like this place was a completely seperate world. The creole language incorporated in this book was great. I was salivating as the various creole dishes were used througout this book. Not to mention, I found so much beauty in the swampy land of gators and spanish moss covered trees.

Steam
WHEW. I hate to be so crass but...the sex was superb! The scenes were sweltering just like the Louisiana heat. And speaking of that southern heat, IDK how they managed to do it during a heatwave with no AC...but hey it had me sweating! However, the sex was more than just some thrown together lust fest. Real emotions emerged as well as truth. It was really beautiful.

In conclusion
This book was exceptionally written. I'm living off a huge romance high right now. I can't wait to read the rest of these books. It is jam packed with humor, love, and Family. I'm so happy I stumbled upon this book because I haven't been this utterly happy from a book in a while. It delivered depth with out dragging my heart on a rat race and threatening to give me literary stress induced premature grey hair. Also before i forget, The epilogue was GREAT. Sandra Hill gives the readers a true HEA. It was beyond heart warming. This book reminded me of the Princess and the frog, with its jolly creole music ,food, and bayou charm. The southern charm in this book is effervescent. [image error]

I honestly don't understand how this book could have a 4 star rating. I'm a big fan of Sandra Hill and loved Frankly, My Dear because it was cute and FUNNY. This book that was supposedly "hilarious", didn't even make me chuckle or smile once.
The setting and second characters were great ( the eccentric grandmas are usually a must in light chick lit), but the Cajun slang was laid on too thick for me and the characters fall in lust by page 1, and in love by chapter 3.
There was no witty banter or any sort of conversation between the two. Their conservations usually go something like.
Her: " Feng Shui bla bla, we should paint your room red bla bla"
Him; " Red as in sex? You must want the D."
Her: " Omg, YES, I do want the D but no."
And that's about it.
I still love Sandra Hill and think she THE MAN, however this book just didn't cut it for me.
Recommend it to someone who wants to read something reeeeally really light.

Resumen de la historia

Opinión

Tengo debilidad por las historias que se ambientan en Louisiana, o al menos esa Louisiana llena de pantanos, cocodrilos, mosquitos y humedad que me pintan. Simplemente me encanta.

This was cute and sexy but didn't knock me over with hilarity as I was expecting having heard this book was supposed to be laugh out loud funny. But humor is a subjective thing. The arguments and the conflicts were a little forced but overall it was an entertaining book and Remy was certainly a yummy cajun.

Honestly, this book was so contrived and sexually-based that I didn't finish it. There was no real explanation of why the characters liked each other, aside from pure sexual attraction. That's fine if that's the "romance" you're looking for, but it's not the kind that I prefer to read.

2.5 stars

I really liked Remy he had a sense of humor, caring, and a tortured hero. I could not stand Rachel though and that’s why I give this book a 2.5 star rating. She was so annoying, demanding, and selfish, unable to see things from Remy’s perspective. Who really believes that someone is going to spill every secret they have to someone they have known for a few days? Rachel does and then she acts like a toddler when she finds out he hasn’t laid his entire life story out her her in 48 hours.

I disliked the heroine too much to be able to enjoy the book.

I loved the hero, Remy, and much of the book was a fun read. But, I don't recommend it because of my dislike of Rachel.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
I hated the reason she broke up with Remy. The author should have used another reason to break them up. When she finally agreed to have sex again at the cabin, it was after three days of denial. I didn't like that she made them wait three days before having sex. Then when he came to her after two weeks to try to get back together, she wouldn't have him. Also, I didn't buy the ending. She was mad at him for several reasons. Then after she saw him go onto the stage, she all of a sudden forgets the past and goes off with him? It was not a reasonable resolution.

DATA:
Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: not counted, but at least three. Setting: the bayou, Louisiana, and a small part of the story is set in the Washington D.C. area. Copyright: 2003. Genre: contemporary romance.

I liked this story - good humor, great chemistry between the H/h and although it was part of a series, I didn't feel confused or lost at all.

The chemistry was the greatest selling point - the weakest was the conflict between Remy and Rachel. Rachel has some issues with her weight because of her idiot fiance (and fyi 5'10" and 140 lbs isn't overweight) and that irritated me. Remy's burns from an accident he suffered while in the Air Force was more believable but I loved that Rachel saw past it. I thought that would be a believable obstacle to overcome but the author throws in an argument about an alleged "secret" (which I would question) between them that felt much more forced and less organic. I didn't believe the obstacle they had to overcome and as a result, I wasn't as invested in the outcome. I knew they would get their HEA, and the obstacle was more of an annoyance than believable for me. Otherwise, I thought it was good and I would be open to checking out other books by this author.

There was a time, somewhere around the middle of the book, when I thought I would be giving it a two star rating despite being initially offended by the potrayal of Louisianians and South Louisiana, however, toward the end of the book I was just so annoyed with BOTH of the main characters that I was simply glad to be finished with it. This was my first and most likely last time reading anything by Sandra Hill because I didn't care for most of her characters and I found that what plot there was was just there to fill in spaces between the sex scenes.

The first half of this book was so delightful and funny, I couldn't stop reading. I thought the heroine's argument against the hero in the second half was a bit overblown. She blames him for exercising discretion in the personal parts of his life, but she does the same. The second half was a bit rough-going for me but it all led to a touching HEA. I will read more from this series and author. I LOVE the Cajun setting.

This was such a wild, FUN ride. The setting was so incredible, it came alive. The hero and heroine fell in lust and then love on first sight but it really worked for this story as everything was just MORE in the book. It's pretty sexy but some parts definitely read of its time (2003 release) which is not necessarily a negative thing. Not my last Hill book as I'll be binge reading the rest of the series!

After living in Louisana for 4 years and loving every minute of it. I had to buy this book. I was not disappointed.
This book is really funny. Just the main characters are good enough but with the supporting cast of characters, it is a blast.

First off, lemme just start by saying how much I loved seeing Luc and Sylvie again. I realize this is Remy's story, but it was nice seeing the two of them happily married still with a family of their own. And speaking of, it's nice to know they didn't waste any time with the babymaking. ;) Also nice was seeing feisty old Tante Lulu, as well as the return of Luc's cabin. :)

And now that that's out of the way, let's talk Remy and Rachel.

Remy wasn't quite as sexy as his big brother Luc, but then, not everyone can have Luc's swagger (although Remy did have some of his own with that slow, sexy smile of his). Though, he sure knew how to rock a bed (and a massage table apparently), and he certainly managed to melt my butter, to steal a phrase from Steel Magnolias. ;)

Together, he and Rachel had some pretty steamy chemistry, even if they did hop into bed together after knowing each other for just a couple of days (and never mind the fact that Rachel had just gotten out of a long-term relationship prior to meeting Remy).

By herself, however, Rachel was nigh on unlikeable. While I commend her for leaving her a-hole fiancé David, her reaction upon arriving in Louisiana and meeting her grandmother was a bit on the snooty side. Though, her reaction to Tante Lulu, I felt, was even worse. Yes, Tante Lulu didn't like her at first, and yes, Tante Lulu is a crazy old bat, but she's still a senior citizen, not to mention Remy's great-aunt, so to have Rachel call Lulu crazy and threaten to hit her with her purse (even if the scene is played for comedy) is just appalling to me.

And then there's Rachel's reaction, or rather overreaction, to Remy's 'big secret'. While I don't think Remy should've been so sensitive about the issue, his feelings on the matter were at least realistic and understandable. Rachel, on the other hand, just blew things out of proportion by getting upset at Remy for not telling her sooner. Never mind the fact that he'd never even told his own family, nor that the subject had only really come up after they'd known each other only two weeks, after having spent some time with his three nieces. In fact, Rachel herself was unsure of where she'd stood up until that point, so for her to accuse Remy of betraying her trust and taking the choice away from her like David did is laughable.

Again, the two had chemistry, and the love scenes were certainly steamy, but Remy and Rachel's relationship just wasn't as developed as it could've been (and certainly nowhere near as developed as Luc and Sylvie). Bottom line, Sandra Hill can write some smoking hot heroes with love scenes to match, but her heroines sure could use some work.

Overall Verdict: 7 pet alligators out of 10.

Received in exchange for a honest review.

Loved Remy. He wasn’t perfect. He was surly at times, didn’t look perfect but it was his imperfections that made him so irresistible. He didn’t put on airs and was working hard and a great guy.

Granted he did have a wee bit of a feud with Rachel’s great great aunt-who is a absolute hoot-and that adds some serious entertainment to the story.

Rachel is a wee bit stuck up at the beginning. I love what she did with her ex though. That was awesome. I also loved how she saw beyond the scars Remy has-both inside and outside. She saw the man he was. Even when he was being a idiot she saw him for him. She goes to Louisiana to get away and find family and finds so much more. She finds herself and love. She finds a sassy side, a independent side and she sees that she isn’t always right on things. For instance when it came to Remy and talking to her friends.....

together these two have some great chemistry. They complement one another as well. Remy helps Rachel see beyond the stuck upness she tends to have and gets her out of her comfort zone. Rachel helps Remy to see beyond his scars and see that love heals you. They are understanding and patient with one another but also respect one another.

Their story gives us both views and Remy’s is a hoot. Watching him get driven crazy by Rachel and her family but also seeing him fall in love is so so wonderful. We get funny moments and sexy moments. Entertaining moments and wonderful family times as well. A story with some danger and excitement but lots of heat and has you glued to the end.

I've read Sandra Hill for a long time. She has a quirky way of writing which sometimes take a little getting used to, but fits her stories just fine and this was no exception. I did chuckle at times throughout the story, which again, is expected. The storyline flowed well and the characters are fully developed. I do have one quibble and most readers probably wouldn't be bothered by it. Early on in the book, Rachel's Granny Gizelle is said to be "working on the spindles" of a loom, making a rag rug. Looms do NOT have spindles. It's also mentioned that the loom is on the front porch. Unless that front porch is enclosed, a loom is not going to be out and exposed to the weather. Not even in the bayou of Louisiana. Looms are valuable tools. It's either going to be inside the house/cabin or in a barn, NOT on a front porch where it's exposed to the weather.

Messy but fun, 3 stars.

The plot was of a hell of a mess but the 2 main characters were likeable. The side characters were likeable but extreme stereotypes for Cajuns & Louisiana in general.
Some of the language is outdated now in a bad way.

Not enough food descriptions! If you’re going to be including Cajun characters at least have 1 food scene per chapter.

Not enough Useless the Gator. Did enjoy the red bow. Where was our scene where they fed him marshmallows? Gators love marshmallows.

Ok also, how was not a single character a lineman, oil rig worker, or shrimper?
No one came back from time off to do some seasonal fishing.

The one storm scene in LOUISIANA didn’t even have them with a hurricane party Or guessing where there’d be floods OR guessing how New Orleans would fare OR worried about their family back in the bayou.

Yet another delightful book by Sandra Hill. I initially discovered her via a chance read of a book from her Viking I series. I enjoyed it so much I looked for more of her books. Tante Lulu appears in the Deadly Angel series in a "cross-over" plot. I enjoyed the story set in Louisiana, and decided to add Sandra's Cajon books to my "to-read" list. Having read Remy's story I am about to start Cajun Cowboy. I still need to go back and read Luc's story. Sandra Hill's combination of the story itself and the humorous quips keeps me reading!

This is Remy's story, an Air Force Veteran who was burned down one entire side of his body, face to foot. He has hidden the fact that this event made him sterile, as if he could be any less of a man as a "beast." Rachel is a transplant Yankee from southern roots, who was treated poorly by her now ex-fiance and can't get over the pain a clueless male can inflict. When she looks at Remy, she doesn't "puke" at seeing is burn scarring. Can they find a way to meet in the middle of their pain and idiot ideas to make a romance and great sex bloom?

This series can be a bit silly in places...

Though at times this book ( in fact the series ) can be a bit silly. The humor is hit or miss. I simply don't care because I love Sandra Hill's books. Of course, her Viking books are the best and should not be missed Any of her books are worth the price to own. After all, why do we read romances, to begin with? Escapism plain and simple. So if an idea seems far-fetched who cares. As long as the story flows, there are few grammar mistakes, and the characters are relatable then all is good!

Good read

I've read every Cajun, Viking, and Jinx book Sandra Hill wrote, but in paperback. I'm now reading in e-book. The humor is laugh-out-loud hilarious. Tante Lulu is a pip. This one is about Remy, who was badly burned in the Air Force. And Rachel, who just dumped her 5-year fiance and found a grandmother in Louisiana. It's list at first sight and they both right it tooth and nail. Will St. Jude lend a helping hand. Read to see.

Rachel breaks up with her fiancé and heads to Louisiana to meet her Grandmother and cousin that she didn't know about. Remy is a retired Air Force pilot that was injured in Afghanistan and doesn't want to become involved with anyone. Tante Lulu has St. Jude working on finding Remy a bride. Throw in some drug smugglers, the DEA and Remy's meddling family and you have a funny love story.

When Rachel dumps her clueless fiancé and flees to the Louisiana bayou, she expects peace and quiet not a shotgun wielding great aunt, feuds with the LeDeux family, and a scarred Cajun pilot who makes her heart race. Between Feng Shui-ing his houseboat and dodging alligators (and her ex), Rachel might just find that love shows up in the most unexpected places.

There were so many hurts on both sides. Most of this book is very good about showing you what happens when two fragile insecure people decide to get involved. The is of course the ending of a romance novel.
