Gosh, do I love a Bailey Weggins Mystery!

If you've never read Kate White's Bailey Weggins series, I've heard them referred to as Sex and the City meets Nancy Drew. Fitting, since the author is the former editor of Cosmopolitan magazine. I absolutely love these books. They are fun, light-hearted, and usually have some good twists to them. This one was enjoyable for me, and could absolutely be read on its own (though the character develops across books, so it is also nice to read these in order). It doesn't spoil any of the previous books in the series, so a reader could dive in to this one as a solo book.

Plot Teaser (Spoiler Free)

Lethally Blond picks up with our heroine Bailey Weggins still working for Buzz Magazine. Buzz is sort of a celebrity gossip magazine, and Bailey writes about celebrity crimes. But now Bailey is about to find herself involved in a celebrity murder case that hits very close to home! One of Bailey's friends and former paramours approaches her about a new TV show he is working on called Morgue. A friend and co-star has gone missing, and he needs Bailey's help to track him down.

As Bailey begins her investigation, she finds herself to be the target of some unwanted criminal activity herself. Bailey wants to help her friend Chris, but is she willing to do help if it means putting herself at risk?

The further Bailey goes down the path to finding out what happened to the missing actor, Tom, the more puzzling the mystery becomes. Did Tom run away from his life? Is he hiding out from something? Or is something more sinister going on? Bailey knows that if she doesn't help find out what happened soon, she may find herself as the next victim.

Reflection

I'm not sure what else there is to say, other than that this was a super fun book! With Kate White, I know going in that I'll enjoy the read. I often pick these books up when I'm in a reading slump, because they instantly draw me in and they move quickly and lighten my mood. I've heard some readers criticize these books for White's use of somewhat frivolous descriptors--Bailey may point out the type of shoes she is wearing, or the looks of other characters. While these may be shallow writing elements to some readers, I don't mind them at all and often enjoy them. They remind me of the YA books and fashion magazines I used to read. They also make picturing the characters really easy for me. They also don't really ruin the book. They are sprinkled in, but rarely a focus of any one part.

I'd recommend this book to any lovers of cozy mysteries, Cosmo magazine, Nancy Drew, or even just people looking for a fun, female-led mystery to read!

I am just going to kick this off by saying that I LOVED the audio of Lethally Blond by Kate White, it was done so well compared to book #4, and I loved every minute of it. It is narrated by Renee Raudman and she made a great Bailey Weggins. She sounded a bit like the narrator from Over Her Dead Body (Julia Gibson) which I loved since Gibson's voice was how I would think Bailey would sound. Raudman was just as perfect to voice Bailey and I thought she did such a great job with the audio for this book. As expected, Lethally Blond was a fun and witty book filled with sleuthing, wine, and drama. Not as expected, there was a really gross part of the book that I was not expecting. Look at you branching out Kate White! This wasn't a gory book at all, but one part will make you cringe, and I know I can't be alone here.

We didn't see as much of Bailey's neighbor Landon in this one which was a tiny bit disappointing as he is one of the minor characters I love from this series, but White keeps things interesting with plenty of action and other characters. I loved the complexity of the plot and the way Bailey slowly unravels the clues until we end with a flourish! There was a lot of action at the end of Lethally Blond, and I didn't have the perpetrator figured out which is always a plus. This series can easily read as standalone novels, but I am reading them in order as a personal preference. I have become so attached to this world and Bailey as the main character, and I hope White writes these books for many years to come.

After having an intense affair with a television star, crime reporter is going through the motions, when the star contacts her to tell her an actor from the show has gone missing.

They investigate, and things come to a pretty decent conclusion.

No TSTL moments that I recall.

Horrible, poorly written, poorly edited and proof read book. It is really disconcerting that a book by a woman who is the editor in chief of a major magazine would be written so poorly and contain so many error.

Hey Kate--the phrase is "wring your neck" not "ring"

I think one of the biggest issues I have with these books is that the author's main occupation has been as an editor. There were a lot of issues that should have been taken care of by a good editor. It's difficult to edit your own writing, that's something that is just a fact. But you also understand the importance.

That aside, it was what I was looking for: a Cheetos sort of mystery. I'd read the others in the series so far, and I don't expect a whole lot.

The other issue was the whole back and forth between the guys and it was just way over done. If she's so head over heels for one and not really all that into the other, why so much waffling? Especially when one of the guys was pretty much a terrible boyfriend... Some of the other "issues" were just junk to pad things out and it was just not that believable. Random friend spending a night at a guy's place and his girlfriend is randomly answering the other guy's house phone and pretending to be someone she's not? Unrelated to ANYTHING else.

The mystery was okay, though there was a good deal of telegraphing ahead of time for the reveal.

More plot development, less love life development, would've been nice. I want my mysteries to read like mysteries, not chick lit.

Lethally Blond is the 5th book in Kate White’s Bailey Weggins series. These are unique crime fiction stories because they are almost romantic suspense, but not quite. They are a cross between murder mysteries from an investigative reporter perspective and a Sex in the City TV show meets Glamour magazine.

Bailey works for the celebrity gossip magazine, Buzz, so we gets bits of that scene within the NYC setting, all while solving a fairly complicated mystery. We also get a lot of her personal romance (and resultant poor choices and fairly immoral decisions) in equal measure with her detecting and sleuthing.

The stories can feel a bit crass and even dated (take a look at the cover) but they are also somehow addictive. These are the kinds of books I pick up when I need a familiar go-to read, or something to get me out of a reading slump. They have issues, but are also entertaining and engaging, fairly layered, complex mysteries.

In this particular story, Bailey happens to get in touch with an old flame and up-and-coming TV star when he requests Bailey’s help in finding a friend and fellow co-star who has gone missing. Little does she know what all she’s getting herself into. It’s certainly more dark and grizzly than she first suspected and offers up a whole host of possible suspects in the crime.

As always, Lethally Blond is a quick, entertaining, easily engaging story. It does end on some cliffhangers and is not without its flaws, but I found it, and this whole series, lots of fun to read..

Bailey Weggins is now working as a celebrity crime reporter for Buzz magazine. Chris Wickersham a model and actor that Bailey had a short fling with last winter is back in New York. It appears he'll be the star in a show called Morgue about investigators in the New York City's medical examiner's office. As Bailey is wondering if they'll run into each other, Chris calls and asks Bailey to help him find his friend Tom Fain who coincidentally also has a part in the new show but didn't show up on set as expected and now more than a week has passed.

One of the many reasons I love this series is the sense of humor Bailey has been given by author Kate White. Bailey's sense of humor shines through not only in some of the moments she's talking to herself or giving herself another lecture about a guy but also in her descriptions about everything. Here are 2 of favorites from Book 5...
• ...killer views of Central Park, and a floor-to-ceiling limestone fireplace that you could roast a pig in.
• Locket had tied a Hermes scarf around her head and donned a pair of big round black sunglasses. In her slim yellow plants and crisp white blouse with three-quarter sleeves, she looked as if she were attempting to channel Jackie-O.
Anyone that likes a combination of mystery, crime, and romance all against the backdrop of Manhattan (New York) will enjoy this series!

Kate White is my female version of Stuart Woods. Sex, thrills, murder, suspense, money, food, secrets, and a general sense of walking around New York City... you know Elaine's (even though now she has passed.)

Bailey is not super rich like Stone Barrington, but works for a magazine and covers the rich who get themselves in trouble. Bailey Weggins is an amateur sleuth of sorts and when she digs, she upsets people even though her digging is just to write a story. Stars are always getting into trouble and Bailey always finds a juicy spin including this one supplied with two murders. Who wants to rub out Bailey this time? Who has she offended?

Love this series!!!! I just love it!

Bailey is such a different narrator. We definitely get a lot of her personal life and I was more invested in her love life than whodunnit in this instance! Her old flame Chris, who we meet in the second book I think, is filming a new TV series in NYC, and calls Bailey for help finding his cast-mate Tom Fain. Tom hasn't been seen for more than a week.

It's weird because White didn't write another Bailey book for years, but this one almost ends on a cliffhanger, at least in terms of her romantic interests. It felt very abrupt to me and there were certain pieces that didn't feel wrapped up

In my very humble opinion, this book is horrible. The editor should be shot on sight and the authoress should go back to grammar school. There were spelling and grammar mistakes that should have been recognized and fixed, instead I had a continuous desire to get out my red pen and start fixing the damn thing. The plotline reads like a twist between Star magazine and a bad film noir mystery. She basically takes in consideration the typical American's obsession with celebrities and wraps a loose mystery around it. I wanted to burn it after I was finished, but somehow I restrained myself. Thank goodness I didn't buy it or I would be pi**ed.

Bailey Wiggins is a journalist for Buzz magazine tracking down stars when unfortunate things happen to them. Morgue is a new show being shot in NYC and one of the stars is someone that Bailey once had a brief relationship. Out of the blue, he calls her to ask her to help him find his friend and castmate who has disappeared. Surprisingly, no one on the show seems to be too concerned over the fact that Tom hasn't been seen for a few days. As is typical of White's novels, there are plenty of twists, turns, excitement and action as Bailey attempts to find out just what happened. I actually would give the story a 3.5 and wish that Goodreads would allow that since the story does keep you engaged and in the dark until the end.

I just recently discovered this series of 'Bailey Weggins' mysteries, this book being the last in the series (so far). I absolutely LOVED this series. It is a light mystery read and this suited me just fine as I grew a little tired of some of the over the top, extremely graphic murder mysteries I had been reading. One critic describes this series as "Nancy Drew meets Sex and The City" and I fully agree. This series has a refreshing, contemporary feel with a murder mystery thrown in. I enjoyed Bailey's sharp, sarcastic wit, not often seen with most protagonists. I also appreciated the way the bit of 'romance' in the series was written. Rather than that soppy, ridiculous--we just met on page 10 and on page 50, you profess your undying love---this series deals with romance in a far more mature and realistic way. Hence, the Sex and The City comparison. Growing up, I devoured the Nancy Drew series, and maybe that is another reason I am so crazy for this series. It was like going home again, a blast from the past, a huge part of my mid-childhood. Having just finished the last book in this series, I feel as if I have just finished a GREAT meal, and now been told there is no dessert. I highly recommend this series to anyone who is in the mood for a lighter mystery, and anyone who grew up reading and loving Nancy Drew, a little cheesy dialogue and all.

Annoying! I hate books where the supposedly smart amateur sleuth, always a female, puts herself in danger because she doesn't figure out who the killer is in time. At least in this book, she saves herself but still so aggravating. This was a decent mystery until the conclusion when it was the crazy obsessive ex-girlfriend who killed then, of course. Character development is lacking and dialogue is only so-so. I didn't care about what happened to Bailey. I've read others in this series, probably 10-15 years ago. I couldn't remember why I stopped but I'm sure it was the stupidity of Bailey and always putting herself into danger. One more thing. She had a cell phone in her purse which she could have found when confronting the killer and called the police. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I will not read another by this author and do not recommend.

I was in the mood for a mystery and thought this sounded interesting.

I didn't mind the writing style but the story was really dumb. I couldn't believe that Bailey would put so much effort and personal risk into investigating the disappearance of someone she's never met ... and all at the request of a guy she had had a thing for six months earlier but hadn't seen since.

I don't think so.

Plus Bailey is a mere reporter of a celebrity mag ... yet everyone is answering her questions and giving her info as though she is a cop.

Plus she finds time to bang two hot guys.

The ending was blah ... I didn't care who dunnit by the time I got there.

If you can get beyond all this, you may enjoy this book. But I can't say I'd recommend it.

Bailey Wiggins is back. this time trying to decide between a new young love or an older, not so dependable kind of guy...oh and the mystery..its here too. Now Bailey is the crime reporter for the checkout line rag Buzz. When the star of the newest CSI type show becomes the topic of her own series Bailey keeps digging until she finds the truth, and almost ends up thin the script herself.

#5 in the Bailey Weggins murder mystery series by fantastic author Kate White did not disappoint. Another fast read because it's a page-turner! Once again, I was SURE I knew who the killer was, only to be, excuse the pun, dead wrong. If you enjoy light mysteries, this is a great series. Only one more book for me to go though. Bummer!

This mystery keeps you guessing all the way to the end. Although I have enjoyed the two previous Bailey Weggins books in this series which I've had the pleasure of reading, Lethally Blond kept me intrigued and guessing all the way to the end. And to be honest, I was wrong about who-dunnit so many times which usually doesn’t happen. So, kudos to Ms. White for writing such a captivating and engaging plot. The most interesting part of this mystery for me is how Bailey developed a genuine caring for the victim, even though she never met him, and how it kept her digging for the truth until it almost killed her. I look forward to finding the other five books in this series to get to know Bailey better as the main character and to see how Ms. White improves on her plot development. From book one to book five was off the radar.

I like the Bailey Weggins mystery series because they are fun, light reads.
In this one, Bailey is contacted by a man from her past about a friend of his that is missing. Of course, Bailey loves a good investigation, so she jumps right in. She quickly finds herself in a dangerous situation when someone finds out she is digging, but Bailey won't leave it alone. There's also a bit of romance in the story and her past BF Beau makes an appearance as well.
These books can be read as a stand-alone, but since there are some recurring characters, I think it makes sense to read them in order.

This was another winner in the Bailey Weggins series. I like how she keeps the series fresh by having the action move from the Buzz Magazine office in the previous book. Over Her Dead Body, to a missing persons story in this book. She is not writing the same book over and over like some writers. As in the previous book the ending was unexpected and fulfilling. Kate White has a great imagination and I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.

My first time reading a book by this author. I didn’t realize it was a series with the character Bailey Wiggins, but I’m hooked now and want to read more about her as the ending of this book left things hanging with her two love interests. She solves the murder but also some things left me questioning. I found the book full of twists and turns and it kept my interest! Looking forward to reading the next in the series!

Good little mystery with some flaws. The killer appeared out of nowhere and tied up the loose ends too neatly. And the main character spends too much time worrying about her love life....does he love me...do I love him...what about this guy?
