Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

The Cell saga wasn't my favorite. Personally, I thought Freeza was the apex, as a cosmic villain who could destroy planets and took the premise as far as it could go beyond the earth.

Then the next saga was immediately followed up by time travel. I get it, was cool when Trunks showed up all of a sudden and foreshadowed the next bad guy being that much worse. But after that, it just became a continuous series of telling not showing after that. I just didn't buy it. One character would level up, then we're told "The next android/the next form of Cell is even more powerful" and they couldn't defeat him, until the next next character leveled up. Again and again. But basically the fighting only consisted of the same thing, shooting fireballs and punching and whatnot.

Like, what did it even mean to be so much more powerful when villains could explode planets now?

However, this storyline did work in the sense that Cell was formed out of all the villains who came before. That made it seem like this was to be the finale, that the epic Dragon Ball saga was ending in a satisfying way. Even Cell's origin story with the Red Ribbon Army--who were the first 'serious' villains in the entire series--it was nice how that tied it all back to the early young Goku stories.

In the end, Goku passes on and passes the torch to his son Gohan who awakens yet another hidden power, the next generation of hero emerges, and he saved the day. If there was ever to be a fitting ending, this really should have been it. And, yes, Cell did look cool.

At least, that should have been it. But then Toriyama couldn't stop and it kept going with the next kind of unnecessary arc, another time skip was coming up and Majin Buu...

Ahh, whatever. Call me sentimental ;) The first half is great, and I'd happily give it more stars if it ended there and then. The mistakes of the children, payed for by the parents - don't we know it ;). Thankfully, our mistakes don't mean the end of life on Earth and the destruction of the planet. Well, this one's squarely on Gohan and his blasted Saiyan blood reveling in fight. Goku once again turns out to be the only hope, but at least Gohan learns something from this experience. I'd love this volume so much more if Toriyama hadn't decided to redeem Gohan there and then, bringing Cell back to life once again and giving an altogether weak ending to what could've been a very powerful volume.

Plus, the time-travel in DB is so all over the place it's actually as bad as the MCU - and that's saying a lot.

But at least the Cell saga finally ended. I had higher hopes for this, and it turned out to be a much weaker Freeza copycat.

Yaaaaaay, the stupid Cell storyline is over!!

In the fight for the fate of the world, Cell goes to full power but he’s no match for Son Gohan who’s on some kind of mega-super-hyper-steroids Saiyan level. So Cell, being a sore loser, does something desperate and not one but two main characters die as a result. The world is saved though!

I took a week off of Dragon Ball Z thinking that maybe I was overdoing it and that’s why I wasn’t enjoying the series as much as I usually do, but, after this book, I think it’s just the whole Cell/androids storyline that’s been boring me.

The tension and excitement with Gohan and Cell’s final battle just wasn’t there. Gohan’s so impossibly powerful that there’s no challenge even though Cell keeps coming back at him. It becomes tedious to read as you know Gohan’s gonna beat him, Akira Toriyama’s just drawing it out to fill up a book. And the way Gohan beats Cell once and for all was totally uninspired.

Then – the deaths. First off, the little intro paragraph by Toriyama that prefaces each book? It contains a major spoiler so you know the character that’s going to die about 100 pages before it actually happens – nice one, Toriyama (though the cover is kind of a giveaway too)!

But though it’s a major character, death in Dragon Ball is even more of a joke than in superhero comics from Marvel/DC. The instant that character dies, they appear in the afterlife, totally intact, with a halo above their heads. Death is more of a minor inconvenience that any kind of finality!

There’s also the coda where Trunks goes back to the future to defeat the androids and Cell, which only further underlines the mess Toriyama made with the whole time-travel trope. If Cell died in the past, what would he be doing in the future? Because there are multiple timelines co-existing at the same time, blah blah, blah, and I can’t even be bothered explaining it again – that part of the story was simply complete and utter NONSENSE!

So the big fight is dull and unexciting, the deaths are ineffective in eliciting any sense of sadness because nobody really dies in this series, and the only thing I felt when the book was over was relief that this arc was over and done with!

Volume 19 is Toriyama on autopilot, tying up loose ends and setting things up one last time for the final arc: Buu. I’m praying to Shenlong that the series ends on a high and the next six books are much better than the last six have been!

Finally, that damn Cell storyline is over! What a drek it was. Everything that was wrong with the Freeza arc was tripled in this one. Recycling of old ideas and plots, pointless character deaths and resurrections, huge plot holes, and in Cell's case there was also a convoluted time travel subplot! I disliked almost every volume in the Cell arc, and I say it with confidence this time: Cell is the worst DBZ storyline, bar none. He was a boring, predictable, insufferable villain, and he even surpassed Vegeta in being the most annoying character in the world of Dragon Ball. I am so glad he's finally gone.

Phew... only seven more volumes to go, and I hope that the final arc is going to be great. Toriyama was obviously running out of steam by this point, after writing the manga for more than a decade, and it shows — what once was a delightful and fun book has now turned into a tired mess. At least the ending must be good! Son Goku deserves a much better send off than this.

The wrap up of the Cell storyline features another death - this time a bit more serious since they can't be resurrected by the Dragon Balls. I think the time travel shenanigans gets cleaned up rather nicely.

Previously on Dragon Ball Z

(I) Trunks who is the son of Vegeta and Bulma come from the future and help Goku in order to guarantee a better future.

(II) Goku fights with Cell but easily discovers that while Goku may use up all of Cell's energy, his son Gohan is the only one who can destroy him.

(III) Cell tortures Gohan's friends and family in order for Gohan to achieve Super Saiyan 2 which he becomes successful but now Gohan is a force to not be reckoned with.

That is what you missed on Dragon Ball Z!

The previous volume in my opinion was epic because we got to see Goku kicking ass but also giving the reins to his son to replace him and become the next saga of this series. Between that and the drama with Cell building up it allow this volume to succeed as we conclude the Cell storyline and the fighting scene between Gohan and Cell.

When reading this volume I entered with no expectations because sometimes the type formulas that Akira Toriyama has used in the past may not necessarily be applied for this epic fight and I am grateful for pursuing these thoughts.

We finally get the fighting scene with Gohan and it is intense. Gohan from my perspective has finally grown up and with this new sense of being a Super Saiyan I believe he mirrors exactly to his father in the God-like appearance when they are about to obliterate an enemy in this series. Gohan is no longer acting on childish whims and by trusting in his powers and his loved ones he was able to turn Cell from fantastic evil villain to a wild animal with rage.

Because of this transition, Cell has become like Trunks who turned into Super Saiyan 2 and was only fighting based on rage meaning it leaves open spaces to attack and somehow in Cell's blind rage, he throws up Android #18 making him now incomplete. With that information Cell becomes fatter and fatter turning essentially into a bomb that can destroy the entire Earth.

In order to protect it Goku sacrifices himself and transport Cell to Kaio-Sama's place and they all die. Unfortunately for Goku, his death was in vain because when Cell exploded himself a piece of himself was still intact an as long as his "cells" are alive he can immediately regenerate so Cell heads to Earth again to kill everyone.

Since Cell has part Saiyan in his blood, this huge fight with Goku and Gohan has made him practically invincible and kills Trunks instantly. When Vegeta witness the death of his son, the connection between the love and bone of father and son appears and Vegeta goes into a rage that we have never seen before reaching new levels in his abilities as he tries to destroy Cell. Vegeta is no match for Cell.

Gohan and Cell fight it off again but with the one move that may destroy them both which is the Kamehameha. Cell believes he is indestructible and launches the attack and Gohan performs the same attack but the difference is he has his father with him in spirit and having this new level of confidence and just giving everything he got his Kamehameha becomes superior to Cell and finally the Earth is saved from this evil monster.

Now that Goku is dead and the gang is alive, Dende and the gang summon Shenlong to grant them their three wishes. Yamcha makes the wish to bring back Goku but Shenlong announces that once a person has died, they cannot be resurrected. The wish then becomes if everyone who has been killed by Cell be resurrected and the wish is granted.

Kuririn has a major crush on Android #18 and asked if she could become human because he knows that she is not completely evil and Shenlong tells him that because they are bio-organic robots and all this weird science stuff its a completely gray area and cannot make them human but he can remove the bombs that are inside them which Kuririn wishes for.

Android #18 was not anticipating this to happen and wonders why Kuririn performed this task but its quite obvious that he is in love with her and I feel like because no one ever did something this kind for her especially when she didn't ask for it she develops feelings for him but doesn't make it obvious which I completely love and stay true to the characters.

Everyone mourns now the death of Goku because he was one of the best characters of all time let alone in this series and they cannot believe he is completely gone. I love that mini scene where Vegeta is completely angry because his wish to beat Goku is ruined. Since everything was resolved Trunks now leave this world and go back to his future.

I love Akira Toriyama for countless reasons but what I didn't expect was he included a bonus story of what happens when Trunks returns to his present world and how he deals with the Androids and Cell. Trunks is a new and improved hero because of his countless training and learning the ways of martial arts and combat. Having that ability he can now mourn the death of those who has perished in his timeline and seeks vengeance and successfully kills Android #17 & 18.

The last time travel he was not expecting Cell and because of that and his lack of training he died and let Cell come into the past world to destroy Goku and the gang. Now that he knows what to expect he prepares himself to fight against Cell and actually wins. He has finally brought peace on Earth and I love everything about this story.

I felt heartbroken now that Goku is dead and I wonder how they are going to bring him back alive because I know before as I was reading and now that this isn't the last time we see Goku and the Gang fighting to restore peace to the universe. I love this series and cannot say goodbye so until next time stay tuned for another episode of Dragon Ball Z!...

It would've been much better if the first half of this volume was the end of the previous volume as we see Cell's ultimate fate. The second half looks to wrap things up with multiple timelines and sets the tone for the future of the world under a new guardian.

End of the Cell Games! I think this is probably the most interesting arc because of everything that Gohan achieves. I also really really like Future Trunks. It’s a much better experience to read Dragon Ball over watching it, in my opinion, just because everything is so much more concise.

“You can do it!! Believe in yourself!! One last time- show me the power we made together!”

description

Just finished Dragon Ball Z, Vol. 19: Death of a Warrior, and what a ride it was! This volume brings the Cell Saga to an intense and emotional conclusion. Gohan finally steps up, showing off a power that rivals the best of the best, and his battle with Cell is nothing short of epic.
The twists and turns in this volume kept me on edge, especially as the Z Fighters face some of their toughest decisions yet. The artwork is as dynamic as ever, and the emotional depth really adds weight to the action.
I know the Cell Saga has had its ups and downs, but Gohan’s journey in this volume really hits home. The wrap-up with Future Trunks ties everything together nicely, making for a satisfying close to this arc.

This was a fantastic read. The story just gets better and better. Also, the characters are amazing and I love reading about the heroes that are in the Dragon Ball franchise. In the volume, this was the conclusion of the Cell storyline. Gohan is beat Cell; however, Gohan does not kill him fast. Therefore, Goku sacrifices himself and transports Cell to King Kai's planet, killing them all. However, Cell did not die. He comes back to Earth as Super Perfect Cell because he gains the Super Saiyan cells from Goku when he died. Goku helps Gohan defeat Cell in the Kamehameha wave. He also got helo from Vegeta. Cell is defeated. Also, there was a storyline based on Future Trunks' storyline and that was interesting as well. This was another amazing installment to the series. I can't wait for Volume 20. Overall, an incredible read.

10/10:
Genuinely one of my favorite volumes in all of Dragon Ball so far. There’s so much emotion and raw power unleashed as a result of those emotions that I can’t help but to feel them alongside the characters.

The death of Goku and Gohan reaching his full potential was awesome, but I particularly like how Gohan held strong no matter what. Not only did he choose to comfort his mother, but he knows he can reach Piccolo whenever he needs a father figure.

Then you’ve got Vegeta risking everything after Trunks was killed. For a Saiyan who has been considered heartless, I’d say he loves his son.

For volume 19 of Dragon Ball Z, the final battle between Gohan and cell begins. The story in this book is moderatly emotional as well as extremly tense. The power of Gohans emotions are completely relatable and completely show the real potential of his power through friends and family.I enjoyed how Akira was able to put such sadness, but still keep the tense mood that his fights retain. I found real no problems in the book and found it a great book to read for all fans of Dragon Ball Z or any anime fans in general.

To me, this is Dragon Ball Z at its best. My favorite DB manga volume by far, and my favorite manga volume in general by even farther. It always really moves me, and although the Buu Saga is good and gives characters more development, I would have also been happy had this been the conclusion.

Goku who is The father of Gohan was finished with the fight of cell and was beginning to think with all the time and strength he had wasted that he cant beat cell, Who is a villian who absorbed to android robots. He made a deal with Goku and his friends that if one of them can beat him he will leave earth and never return. If not, He will destroy the earth along with the rest of the innocent humans of their world. Goku trusted his son on this battle with cell and believes he will win this fight with him. Goku chooses his son cause he is holding back some unbelievable power that himself couldn't match. Gohan agrees with this and accepts cell's match. No one believes a kid like gohan can beat a monster like cell. But with the faith of his father Gohan believes he will win this battle. With a shocking scene Goku gives cell a senzu bean. (A bean which heals and give strength for training and battling). The FIGHT begins as Cell throws the first punch and he misses which causes gohan and him to go at it. Cell begins to get angry and ends up hurting gohan, Others are wanting Goku to do something because if not Gohan will die. But Goku has other plans and that was having faith in his son. As Cell begins to continuously attack gohan, Others still believe he will not win. Then out of nowhere gohan is still standing and still wants to fight. Cell stands in front of cell in shock that he is rarely hurt. So cell starts to speak with gohan and says i will not fight you anymore until you are on your full power, and gohan hasn't reached that yet so cell begins to get bored and had something up his sleeve. He then begins to have 7 children that were deadly dangerous to Goku and his friends. By this Cell believes gohan will get angry and reach his full power. Goku and his friends are getting hurt really bad by cell's minions and gohan is scared and doesn't know how to unleash his power. As cell says his finishing words for gohan's friend, he tell his minions to "kill them". As soon as gohan heard those words his rage was coming really close. Then android 18 asked Mr. Satan to throw his head across the field to see gohan and told him to let his rage go. "It is not a sin to fight for the right cost" 18 said, and that made sense for gohan. Then cell had other plans and killed android 18.Suddenly a dove passed by gohans brain and he has begun to let his full power loose. Gohan became the first fighter and first saiyan to become a super saiyan two. With using his power gohan begins to kill all of cells minions. As cell sees gohan in his full power he begins to pick up with gohan where they left off. Gohan begins throwing as many punches to cell and dodging all of his hits. This has caused cell to loose alot of energy and is now no match for gohan. Goku began screaming at gohan to finish cell of but gohan was being stubborn. And by this cause He gave cell one last chance to kill him, and that was to blow himself up including the earth. Gohan immediately realize he was wrong for messing cell when he had the chance to kill him. But he failed and goku had no choice but to sacrifice himself to take cell away from the earth. But something came up, Goku ended up with king kai the ruler of the other world. But cell was supposed to be there also but he wasn't; So that means cell was not destroyed and went back to earth stronger than ever. Vegeta ran after cell and tried to blow hm up with his special power but that was no match for him. So with one hit cell threw a blast at vegeta but gohan became a martyr and saved him from his death. Cell began to become tired of the tricks and wanted to finish off the earth for good. He began to do a Kamehamehah which is a power technique from goku . With that he blew one at gohan and gohan too gave his kamehamehah; But he could not do this by himself but with the help from his friends they tried to create a diversion to distract cell from his battle with gohan. And with one more shot Gohan was told from his father Goku, "Now your chance take the shot son and finish him." Gohan blew the strongest and most powerful kamehameha with the help from his dad to defeat cell and was gone forever. Gohan and his friends gathered all around to all go home with the rest of his Family.

And with that, the Cell Saga is over? I put the question mark there because honestly it didn’t feel like a whole lot was going on in this arc. Maybe this is because I read it so much quicker than the past two but once Cell got introduced everything progressed so linearly that it just blends into itself.

That being said I do really like the conclusions of the arc. I LOVE that someone other than Goku was the one to defeat the villain (even if Gohan’s father was a big help) and this really solidified Gohan’s character in the story of Dragon Ball. With Goku’s death and all the visual reminders of their connection afterwards, this arc really does feel like a passing of the torch for protagonists, even if I’m left unsure how long that shift will last. Yeah Goku’s dead, but we all know how little that means in the story. That being said I did actually really love his farewell in this book and however unlikely it is, I do kind of hope he stays dead, even if just for a decent amount of volumes.

I really liked all the farewells at the end of this arc as well. It’s clear that we are about to hit a time skip before the Buu saga and this leads into that well. All the little waves and byes between different characters is pretty heartwarming and weirdly seeing this made me sad that the series is coming to an end soon. For as big as the ensemble is, I enjoy each of their personalities and dynamics a LOT. But easily the most important moment in this (besides the panel of Gohan resembling Goku in the Sky) is Trunks and Vegeta’s final interaction. I’m really curious on if he will come back in the next saga, or if he will be replaced with the present baby version as post time skip I imagine Gohan will be a lot older. While there is some pretty interesting stuff that Toriyama could do with this were Baby Trunks now has to live up to his future self, I will miss Future Trunks a lot and I can’t help but feel he was under-utilised in the end.

We also end this with Trunks going to the future and beating the androids. It’s a fine fan-servicy moment but we really don’t need it for 2 whole chapters. I would have much preferred maybe a couple of pages of silent panels to tell this story and not drag it out, but maybe Toriyama needed extra time to plan what’s next.

The rest of this stuff is just peak Dragon Ball. Gohan delivers easily the best Kamehameha in the entire series and his personality change post-transformation is actually pretty engaging contrast. He has come a LONG way since the Freeza saga.

Cell returning after death was also kind of eh, but at this point I’m used to it and it led to the Goku+Gohan Kamehameha which is one of the peaks of the Cell Game arc, so I can’t be too annoyed.

And yeah, that’s the Cell Saga complete. I’ll admit it’s definitely a step down from the previous 2 and underwhelming in retrospect. It starts GREAT and so promising, but the middle act comes off as pretty generic and is definitely where Dragon Ball’s formula starts to show its flaws. But it does turn that around with a great conclusion to get me back on board, even if I do wish the Cell Game was built up a bit more and felt more consequential. In the end we only really got 2 match ups (Mr Satan does not count) which isn’t exactly the return-to-form tournament that I was hoping for. But also it makes sense considering how inconsequential 90% of the characters would be against Cell. Honestly would have much rather a proper tournament to determine who the strongest fighter is who would then fight Cell. But overall that’s nit-picky and for what Toriyama is going for its decent execution.

Uhhh I also like Vegeta. Great book 👍 time for Buu.

And we've reached the end of the Cell Saga! This was originally supposed to be the actual finale of DBZ. It was definitely a nice little wrap up at the end, but I'm personally glad they continued the series and the characters get an even better send off in another 7 volumes.
Gohan is super charged and showing impressive strength and awesome moves. However, much like the others who've gone super before him, the Saiyan instincts take over and he's too arrogant. After wiping the little cells out he gives Cell a run for his money but doesn't obliterate him just yet. Cell actual vomits out 18 and becomes weaker as he fades to his Semi-Perfect form. Desperate, Cell decides to self-destruct taking the Earth with him. Goku isn't having this though and with a quick goodbye uses instant transmission to bring him and Cell to King Kai's world and blows everyone up there...including Bubbles. :/ But Cell still maintained his core in the blast and uses his Saiyan DNA to get stronger and return to Earth. Gohan is about to give up but he hears his father from beyond giving him the strength for a super kamehaha wave that zaps the rest of his strength...and finally defeats Cell. Goku tells everyone not to revive him and everyone is restored, even 18. Vegeta vows to never fight again, Tien says he'll never see anyone ever again...and Kuririn admits to having feelings for 18. Trunks returns to his timeline, defeats the androids and the Imperfect Cell. Happily ever after!

This was such a fun volume! A great wrap up to such a crazy saga and an awesome progression of everyone's individual characters. It's very clear why this is so many fans favorite saga.

Despite myself not interested in Dragon Ball Z I do have a large amount of respect for the franchise.

As I said before in my review of Dragon Ball, this kickstarted the trends for later Shonen manga and that's something to admire about the entire Dragon Ball series. Shonen manga series have taken elements from the Dragon Ball series and use it for inspiration for their own work like battles, art, character design, and plot. I feel like I was a bit too old when I was first introduced to the starters of Shounen and Shojo. Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon were introduced to me a bit too late after I had started reading & watching series like InuYasha, Ouran High School Host Club, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Code Geass.

Again, I still think it's an admirable franchise despite my personal feelings towards it. (I don't hate it but I didn't love it either) It's extremely popular worldwide and for the anime to still be watched and loved to this very day I think that says a lot about it. There are many things to like and admire about it because of the legacy that it brought with its creation.

While I don't love Dragon Ball Z, it has done a lot for a very popular art form and will continue to be great and loved for years to come.

Volume 35: Chapter 409-420
Arc 20: Cell Games Saga

Gohan transformed in Super Saiyan 2 and easily get the upperhand in the battle. Cell vomitted Android #18 and reverted back to his uncomplete form. Desperately, he inflated himself and once his body exploded, the whole Earth also will explode. Goku teleports Cell and himself to Kaiō planet and Cell destroyed there along with him.

But, Cell didn't die. His core is not destroyed so he still can regenerate. Cell become complete even without Android #18 and also he possessed the same power as Gohan and teleport like Goku. Cell attacks Trunks and Vegeta counter attacks. But he was easily knocked down. Gohan saved Vegeta and broke his left arm. Cell used overpowered Kamehameha. Gohan counters it with Kamehameha and managed to totally destroy Cell.

Shen Long was summoned and everyone who killed by Cell were resurrected. Goku wants to stay dead as he was the reason a bad guy show up. For the second wish, Krillin wish for the bombs inside Android #17 and #18 to be removed. Krillin falls in love with Android #18.

Trunks return to the future. He managed to destroyed Android #17 and Android #18. He also mamaged to kill Cell before he managed to go to the past. Peace have been restored in the future.

Mostly great, entirely iconic.

The only reason this isn’t a perfect volume for me is the decision to botch Goku’s sacrifice. It’s a meaningful and deserved one, considering he was ultimately responsible for just about all of this. But in about 20 pages, Cell is alive again. Not only does he recover into his perfect form, even though he just spit up 18, but he also learns to teleport just from touching Goku? Makes no sense and it feels like such forced tension.

But if Cell stayed dead then we wouldn’t have the best beam struggle in the series, by far. A climax that builds and builds until it explodes in such a memorable fashion.

Another little nitpick- why does Vegeta sulk and vow to never fight again? Of course he breaks his vow, and it seems so out of character. This is one of the reasons why this could definitely work as the end of the series. (There are chapters in this volume literally called “Finale” and “Farewell Warriors”) I’m glad it wasn’t, but we all know that there is some annoying shit up on the horizon.

A good volume that felt almost like it could have been the end of the whole series. Everything during the Cell Saga is wrapped up here. Definitely a fun run of the manga. Deaths at times feel meaningless in this series though as everyone seems to come back to life anyway. But I really did enjoy the strength of Gohan in this volume. He had his time to shine and it was awesome. I'm not sure if it's coming later or not, but I keep waiting for this amazing character development of Vegeta and I just haven't got there. I like him as a character, but he is certainly not my favorite character like he is to so many people.

Not sure how to rate all these volumes. Like this one was good but it's like there was a bunch of fighting and action and things exploding and Hercule being an idiot and it was fun. So yeah, struggle with the reviews on these. But I am having fun and enjoying myself. Entertaining nearly ever time.
