On the green skies and blue plains of Planet Namek, a war rages between two equally evil forces: Emperor Freeza, who wants to use Namek's Dragon Balls to become immortal, and Vegeta, last prince of the Saiyans, who has betrayed his former master in search of the same prize. Trapped between these two mighty enemies are the peaceful Namekians and Earth's heroes Kuririn, Gohan and Bulma! As Freeza's henchmen Dodoria and Zarbon trade blows with the ever-stronger Vegeta, the Earthlings put their own lives at risk to protect the Namekians until Son Goku's spaceship arrives. But can even Goku's new training regimen--under 20 times Earth's gravity--prepare him for what awaits on this alien world?
Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
The Namek saga of Dragon Ball entered popular conscious with its sheer length and tedium, infamous for this even today now that other stories have taken such drags to even greater lengths. But on this re-read, I'm positively surprised with how quickly things develop and how smoothly the story progresses. Perhaps the memes were actually an exaggeration? Or maybe it all just slows down as things go on?
Freeza and his cronies are collecting Dragon Balls on Namek while Kuririn and Son Gohan look on with horror, helpless. Meanwhile, Son Goku is on his way, training hard, and Vegeta is also on Namek, secretly collecting Dragon Balls for his planned insurrection against Freeza.
This one’s a mostly Vegeta-centric volume as he begins to take out Freeza’s elite guard starting with Dodoria. He learns the truth behind what really happened to the Saiyan homeworld but it also reveals something about Freeza - he’s afraid of the Saiyans’ power. This is also the first time super Saiyans are mentioned… But, as is often the case with Vegeta, his arrogance gets the best of him and his battle against Zarbon goes badly.
Kuririn and Gohan have some cool moments. Gohan heroically saves a Namekian kid called Dende from slaughter at Dodoria’s hands before Kuririn, equally heroically, has to use his wits to save Dende and Gohan. Thanks to a Namekian elder destroying Freeza’s scouters (those head-sets they use to, gah, measure chi power), they’re now unable to pinpoint the locations of the Dragon Balls, buying everyone more time for Son Goku to arrive.
It’s a fun book with a lot of cat and mouse scenes as Kuririn, Gohan and Dende make their way to the Namekian’s Great Elder trying not to be spotted by Vegeta, Zarbon or Dodoria, all of whom are much too powerful to take on in a head-to-head fight. Freeza has five Dragon Balls while Vegeta has one - they have to get to the last one before either of them! There’s also the delightful reappearance of some old friends at the Lord of the Worlds’ place.
Volume 6 is another great addition to the series but I feel it’s more table-setting before the real story begins with Goku’s appearance. Still lots of fun though and I’m looking forward to seeing how Freeza fares in battle - you know it’s gonna be awesome!
Namekians are being decimated by Freeza and his cohorts, and Gohan and Kuririn only watch in horror - but do they?
It's certainly interesting to learn more about Vegeta and his unquenchable thirst for vengeance. Seems like this guy is more than meets the eye (which admittedly isn't much ;)) and has depths beyond the perpetual huff of his. I like how his arrogance and constant scheming to get what he wants is juxtaposed with Goku's humility and willingness to sacrifice himself for the people and things he believes in.
Goku is still flying toward Namek and training for all he's worth, and I'm very much looking forward to the final confrontation!
Ugh, I just can't get into DBZ. I am very annoyed by the Sayans, and this planet Namek storyline has no end in sight, which I really don't like, too. Vegeta is hateful, those other evil dudes are even more hateful, and the whole story just got too depressing in a series that has been mostly joyous and fun for 16 volumes before that. Plus, Goku is hardly in the book anymore, and I'm not that big a fan of his after he grew up, anyway. I don't know, I struggled with the original Dragon Ball a bit at first, too, but by Volume 6 I really got into it and had a lot of fun reading. DBZ, though, still feels like a chore and no fun at all. Should I continue? Will the team finally defeat Vegeta and other guys and go back to Earth and start having at least some fun? I really miss that.
This was fun as we have the Z-warriors protect dende and Vegeta slaughtering the other Namekians and its a war to protect these namekians and both Vegeta and Freeza are searching for the dragon balls and the former gets into battle with Dodoria and then Zarbon but loses. Freeza wants Vegeta. Meanwhile Goku is on his way to Namek and the other 4 Z-Warriors are with Kaio-sama and training there and Krillin and Dende meet the Grand Elder of Namek. This was a fun volume and has a lot of things in it which serves to expand the plot and set up a lot of things which are exciting to come in the future like for instance Freeza talking about "Super Saiyan"///!!!

This volume sets up the massacre on Namek and how powerless our heroes are in the face of the new faces of evil. While Son Goku's journey to catch up and help his friends is only just begun, his training is clearly going to put him on a crucial path toward exceeding his current skills. Meanwhile, Vegeta shows more of his cruel ways.
The Namek's are in trouble. Freeza is going from village to village killing off their people all in search for the Dragonballs. Vegeta is getting in their way but he has some troubles of his own. I'm more ecstatic to see Vegeta in Freeza's presence and the mention of Super Saiyan's. Gohan was my hero in this story. He's starting to change my ind about him.
Everyone just kinda flew around Namek for 30 minutes. None of it was particularly bad. Just a generally slow volume. Gohan getting mad about the Namekians dying was a cool moment, and I kinda vibe with Vegeta's whole shtick. But otherwise, not a whole lot of character development went on.
Having Kuririn and Gohan dodge around planet Namel while trying to save as many innocent Namekians from enemies they know they cannot defeat, all while having a race against the clock before the villains achieve their goal makes for an exciting volume!!!
Previously on Dragon Ball Z (I) Bulma, Kuririn, and Gohan have traveled to space to reach the planet Namek to find the original dragon balls and resurrect their friends and the dragon balls on Earth.
(II) While this may seem like a simple task, we discover that Vegeta is also trying to capture the dragon balls and to defeat the leader named Freeza and his henchmen who Vegeta used to work with before he had gone rogue.
(III) Goku gets cured up by the senzu bean and hops on a spaceship to rescue his friends and family asap before anything horrifying happens to them.
That is what you missed on Dragon Ball Z!
In this volume we encounter our friends Bulma, Kuririn, and Gohan witnessing Freeza and his henchmen up close and personal in small Namekian village. Gohan and gang have the dragon ball radar and when they discovered the village, they noticed that Freeza has 4 dragon balls already and is seeking to claim the 5th one. A few Namekian fighters have arrived to defeat Freeza but were no match for these evildoers, and in return to save the village the head elder gave Freeza the 5th dragon ball but refused to help them find the 6th one.
Since Freeza is evil, he killed practically everyone minus a child who Gohan came to the rescue. By risking this it showcased Freeza that they are not Namekians, and that they are not the only one who wants the Dragon Balls. The time is ticking now and the gang needs to find shelter until Goku arrives. Meanwhile that drama is going on, Vegeta is successfully killing Freeza's henchmen one by one and they are all shocked to see how powerful he has become.
Vegeta gives us some insight into the Saiyan race which is supposedly after every fight if that Saiyan survives he becomes as strong as his last opponent. When looking back it does make sense because Goku fought with Master Roshi who was the ultimate fighter at the time. He obviously survived but now his power is equal to Master Roshi and then he fights Tenshinhan, Mr. Popo, God, and Piccolo and survived. By having hard training and fighting astounding fighters no wonder Goku is like Superman.
If Vegeta is the strongest fighter that Goku has fought so far, there is no telling how invincible he will become the next time he fights and that will practically happen soon. We barely get any Goku action which I kind of like for now because we get insight into Gohan's upbringing and the rest of the gang who didn't have enough time to make an impact into this series.
What was astounding is on the voyage to Namek, Goku gets into contact with Kaio-Sama and he discovers that everyone from Yamcha to Piccolo have arrived to Kaio-Sama's place to train with him and be able to kick Goku's ass. It was refreshing to see them in a positive outlook especially how awful it was to see them get killed. I have no clue if they will ever be resurrected but it would be nice to see our old friends again alive.
By the end of this volume, Goku still hasn't arrived Namek yet but Gohan and Kuririn become friends with the Namekian that they saved who is called Dende and they discover that the last person to have the dragon ball in the head elder who has the sole survivor of the destruction of the planet Namek. This elder is the one who is able to reproduce all these namekians and Dende takes Kuririn to his house to meet him and to ensure he captures the last dragon ball. Will Goku save the day and destroy Freeza and company or will we meet a new evil that has never been seen before? Tune in until next time on Dragon Ball Z...
This was a great read. This series continues to get better and better. This is an absolute thrilling ride. I really enjoyed the action and battles. Vegeta was a great character and in this volume, I saw him face his struggles as he is usually a fearless person. In this volume, Gohan was the main star because he saved someone. I have always loved Gohan because he cares for people a lot. It is very touching to see how he changes due to his emotions. Can't wait to see Goku and the others. Overall, another enjoyable read.

Despite myself not interested in Dragon Ball Z I do have a large amount of respect for the franchise.
As I said before in my review of Dragon Ball, this kickstarted the trends for later Shonen manga and that's something to admire about the entire Dragon Ball series. Shonen manga series have taken elements from the Dragon Ball series and use it for inspiration for their own work like battles, art, character design, and plot. I feel like I was a bit too old when I was first introduced to the starters of Shounen and Shojo. Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon were introduced to me a bit too late after I had started reading & watching series like InuYasha,Ouran High School Host Club,Death Note,Fullmetal Alchemist, and Code Geass.
Again, I still think it's an admirable franchise despite my personal feelings towards it. (I don't hate it but I didn't love it either) It's extremely popular worldwide and for the anime to still be watched and loved to this very day I think that says a lot about it. There are many things to like and admire about it because of the legacy that it brought with its creation.
While I don't love Dragon Ball Z, it has done a lot for a very popular art form and will continue to be great and loved for years to come.
Yeah ok this arc is showing HUGE potential. Super fun read (easily the quickest of the Z run so far) and the focus on Vegeta is making for some pretty engaging storytelling.
This one’s a short review mainly because I forgot to write one and am about to start volume 7 so am just trying to get the thoughts I remember out of the way.
I’m impressed by how different Freeza feels as an antagonist compared to Vegeta. I will admit I was initially worried that they would offer very similar conflict, but this saga overall does feel like a whole new thing which I like. But It probably does help that Vegeta’s character development is further contrasting them as the conflict between them becomes more evident.
Krillin and Gohan stuff was also great and them trying to survive on this alien planet while hiding from impossibly strong foes until Goku arrives is surprisingly tension filled.
To be honest, I don’t have much to say because it’s just a consistently high quality volume. Really great Dragon Ball stuff. I love you Toriyama.
Freeza is being built up really well as a central threat, and I continue to praise how refreshingly expressive he is for a villain in a genre all about strength.
I loved the panel of all the dead allies talking to Goku. But most importantly THE GOAT PICCOLO IS BACK ! OH HOW I PRAYED FOR TIMES LIKE THESE !
The chess game on Namek is underway, and it really is exciting.
I forgot how great Dende’s introduction is, we already have such a solid foundation of Gohan as a character only a few volumes in. VEGETA is still such a cold villian, and seeing him interact with the Freeze force is really interesting. You don’t feel remorse for him, but at the same time, we can understand his feelings of oppression and betrayal. There’s so many moving pieces on Namek, and you can really feel the pressure closing in all around our heroes. But this is another prime example of the themes of Dragon Ball persevering. Kuririn and Gohan is not the duo that we wanted, but it works so well because they only really have each other. Even in the face of unspeakable terror, they will always fight for each other and for the little people like them.
The only reason this one isn’t rated higher is because I know how good it gets pretty soon, and I don’t love how Zarbon transforms to clap Vegeta. I feel like the power scaling just keeps getting more and more messed up and it bugs me. The same issue applies to the Great Elder’s potential unleashed thing. Really lame and lazy writing that gets retconned so many times.
Krillin is in this one, so you already know it’s an instant classic. I’m gonna be honest with you- The Saiyan saga didn’t do it for me as much as it should’ve. Really, it just felt like an appetizer. This is like the side of fries with your burger, right? It’s not crazy, it’s not great- But it’s really important to have, and it’s really refreshing. Like I said before, it has Krillin in it- With more speaking lines than I think he’s had in the entire series up until now. That’s really the best part, honestly, I think we never really got to know a lot of these characters, so it’s great to have some catch up time with Krillin. Second best thing- The world building just goes fucking nuts here. Namek is crazy, Freeza is crazy- I feel like I’ve learned more about the world of Dragon Ball in this volume than I’d learn in like fifty chapters of the original. It’s awesome. But it is a bit long, and kinda tedious. Also, no good fights. Real bummer there. Still, I like where they’re going with it, and I LOVE not having to deal with Goku for one volume ever.

The race to find the Dragon Balls continue. This is still a build-up volume as Goku trains in his spaceship still 6 days from Namek. Bulma, Kuririn, and Gohan are stuck on the dangerous planet as Freeza's henchmen took out their ship. The four fallen Z-Warriors are training in Other World with King Kai though the Lord of Worlds warns not to go against Freeza. Vegeta continues to take out Freeza's men including Kiwi and Dodoria; though he is knocked out by the right hand man Zarbon. HE learns the truth about his home planet, it was no accidental meteor that destroyed it but Freeza himself, fearing a rebellion of the Saiyans. Kuririn saves young Dende who brings him to the Grand Elder of Namek to get the last Dragon Ball.
I know where the story is going, obviously...so this wasn't necessarily a bad volume. It's just my least favorite saga of the entire series and these sort of filler chapters are why.
EN Vegeta reveals himself as an enemy of Freeza and begins attacking his elite soldiers.
Meanwhile, Krillin, Son Gohan, and Bulma, limited in their ability to intervene, try to help the natives of Namek face their new enemies — who are also a threat to them.
Son Goku continues his journey to Namek and uses the time aboard the ship to train intensely. In the meantime, he learns that his fallen comrades have reached Kami-Sama and are about to begin the same training he once underwent after his death.
--
The battles for the Namekian Dragon Balls are in full swing. While Krillian and Gohan are on Planet Namek, they can only watch evil do so much...and they charge into battle to protect those weaker than them. The action is beautifully drawn and the pages fly by as the action is fast paced. While some may not appreciate this, Dragon Ball Z is pretty much the godfather of all-out manga battles! This issue is a big cat and mouse game between multiple people in search of collecting all 7 dragon balls...and it is fun to see how it all unfolds. Reading this again (not my first time) I love the simplicity and yet intrigue of how it all plays out in this volume. I can think of this volume with any number of Rocky movies and the training montage along with music! A lot of work goes into preparing for what will definitely be an all-out battle!
I enjoyed this volume, but it wasn't as good as others.
I'm ok with not a lot of excitement. But something in this volume didn't feel like it gave me as much good information as the last one that was a bit slower as well. We got to see a few interesting fights and Vegeta continues to be a very compelling and I retesting bad guy. I'm not gonna lie though I'm pretty excited to finally see what Frieza can do. Especially after getting to know Zarbon a bit better in this volume.
I loved the brief cameo by some players that will surely be a helping hand in the, hopefully not to distant, future.
After a couple of slower volumes, I'm ready for the action to pick up again now. I hope we get some big brawls in the next volume. I think I'm ready.
As Frieza and his henchmen massacre the Namekian, Gohan and Krillin come to rescue one of the Namekian and run away. Dodoria is chasing them but they managed to get away. Suddenly, Vegeta attacks Dodoria. He learn that Planet Vegeta was destroyed by Frieza and all the Saiyans were killed. Vegeta then killed Dodoria.
Krillin, Gohan and the kid named Dende come to see Bulma in a cave. Krillin and Dende went to see Saichoro to get the Dragon Ball. Vegeta have mastered Ki sensing ability so he doesn't need any scouter. He get one of the Dragon Balls after massacred the Namek villages. Then he meet Zarbon. They fight and Vegeta lose.
Frieza order the Ginyu Force to come to Planet Namek. Krillin and Dende arrived at Saichoro's place.
Krillin and Gohan get to see firsthand what Freeza's soldiers are like, then spend the rest of the volume acting scared while Vegeta fights everyone. We get a showing of just how strong he is now, but also how much the difference is between him and the stronger members of Freeza's forces- he's strong enough to be a threat, not strong enough to confront Freeza directly. I think a lot of this volume is about building up just how strong Freeza is, watching how terrifying his minions are yet are still so scared of the master himself... sort of like Nappa and Vegeta during the Saiyan saga. It might be boring if not for Toriyama's art really selling all the destruction, watching holes get punched in Namekians and how the massive energy blasts rip people apart.
I have the three-in-one collection so this review will be for volumes 4-6. I'm not reading this so that I can understand my partner's references anymore, I'm invested. I'm happy that the battles have become a lot easier to read, I guess I'm getting used to reading manga. I'm gonna have to buy more volumes, I'm gonna have to read the whole series. Don't let your partner get you into one of their hobbies or interests, you might like it so much it becomes your new personality.
The dragon balls, when gathered together can grant any wish. Right now Vegeta the prince of Planet Vegeta is on the loose trying to collect all the dragon balls to become immortal. Though Son Goku and Kuririn collected a dragon ball meaning that Vegeta cannot grant immortality. Freeza a powerful leader has sent the Ginyu force each one of them stronger than Vegeta. Kuririn, Vegeta and Son Goku end up protecting the dragon balls from fate. Goku away from planet Namek are Vegeta, Kurirn, and Son Goku's last hope.
Will the unlikely allies survive or will the Ginyu force deliver its fate?
Another awesome continuation of the story. I like how the story takes the reader to Namek, the home world of Piccolo. DBZ is much more of a slow burn than Dragon Ball, and therefore not as much happens from book to book. There is much more dialogue, but many more characters and ad a result, a deeper storyline.
It’s interesting to me that Toriyama was talented enough to take a story in so many directions. I’m still enjoying these and happy to progress through them steadily. It’ll be a fulfilling accomplishment when I’m done.
