Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.
One day the family Roland assembled for Dinner ,receieves the news that a family friend had passed away, leaving behind a substantial inheritance to one of their sons (Jean Roland). The impact of this unusual incident on the family members and the fraternal bond of Pierre and Jean is exquisitely narrated over the next 8 chapters. As the plot unfolds , Maupassant beautifully illustrates the inner feelings and the repressed thoughts of pierre as well as Jean, skillfully alternating between both protagonists.
This short novel (which was in fact written within only 2 months) succeeds to immerse the reader and keep him engaged from the very first page until the last one, owing to the author's vivid imagery and poignant description of the characters' emotions and interactions.
Having enjoyed every bit of this , I'm looking forward to reading more and more of Maupassant's works :)
