Another run of the mill Deathlands, one that seems like the author wasn’t even sure where the story was going. It’s the post apocalyptic Deliverance as the team meanders down the Tennessee river after a harrowing dangerous mat-trans jump from Japan.
They run into the typical Deathlands residents, inbred villagers, insane priests, a new type of mutie called muddies, and giant mutated insects.
The story doesn’t really pick up until the last third of the novel when they run into an old enemy, Straub, the last man to see the Trader and Abe alive. He’s enthralled to the female baron of old Memphis, who needs viable seed to continue her legacy. Of course she sets her sights on the alpha male of the gang, and Ryan is in her sexual sights.
It’s ends on a cliffhanger, in quite the literal sense, but the ending felt slightly rushed, as there was little time to develop the protagonist.

I have read all of the Outlanders books and I’m this far through Deathlands… This is, by far, the most humorous book so far. I’ve laughed out lots so many times.

I enjoyed listening to that book, but I could not help to notice that (as in some previous books) the author sometimes lets his characters commit stupid mistakes so that they follow down the line of action.
Another rather annoying point throughout the series is the groups unwillingness to even bring small provisions with them, which seems just stupid at times.

Cawdor faces a moral dilemma? This one ends in a cliff hanger.

An average apocalyptic adventure story. This one takes a century after the last war and now there are mutants running around the earth. Recommended
