Amber J. Keyser writes fiction and non-fiction for young adults. Trained as an evolutionary biologist, she cares deeply about the intersection of art and science and the way these disciplines unlock how the world works. She believes in the power of sharing our stories.
Normally the Max Axiom books clarify the science topic written about pretty well, this one wasn't as helpful for me. I think it probably had more to do with just how complicated cells are, and "dumbing" it down can only go so far. From this I learned becoming a scientist was not for me! My brain cells are not numerous enough.
An engaging science book about cell biology in the form of a graphic novel. The subject material parallels some of the genetics and cell biology covered in sixth grade science, so this book would be a useful adjunct to the school material. A fun book about cell biology. I just wish it was longer.
Great educational book for homeschoolers. My 3rd grade boy loved reading it and he's not a reader. It kept his interest and made him look forward to others in the series.
I just discovered the Max Axiom books and I love them! I was able to incorporate “The Basics of Cell Life” into my classroom! Additionally, the representation of a Black male Scientist is important for my students to see! I will definitely be investing in a classroom set!
The artwork is appealing in this book. However I found there was not much of a story to accompany the facts about cells. Really seems more like an illustrated textbook.
Fun reinforcement of basics--organelles and cell division. My kids love any type of graphic novel, so these kinds of books are especially appealing to them.
