Former Detective Superintendent, Bob Hoon, has had one hell of a year.

After being repeatedly beaten, shot at, blown-up, and tortured, Hoon is looking forward to spending a quiet Christmas drinking heavily in front of the TV, while pointedly ignoring the older sister who has invaded his home.

The world, however, has other plans.

When a routine trip to an Inverness shopping centre is interrupted by a squad of heavily armed Santas, Hoon, his sister, and an old army colleague find themselves trapped alongside several hundred terrified hostages.

With so much potential for bloodshed, the police gathering outside the centre can only wait, watch, and try to negotiate with the terrorists within.

But patience has never been Hoon’s strong point.

And so, if he and everyone else in the centre are going to make it home for Christmas, Hoon is left with only one choice.

He’s going to Die Hard the **** out of this thing.

Eastgate is the fourth explosive novel in the Robert Hoon Thrillers series by bestselling author, JD Kirk, and is perfect for fans of Lee Child, Robert Ludlum, and angry, middle-aged Scottish men doing implausible things.

Incel Shocker! Wanker Force #43 Activated for Loop Mission! "Well, we needed some disposables for a distraction to hide our real mission, and a bunch of cellar dwelling numb-nut troll virgins who couldn't get a date in a brothel were the perfect candidates!" - Loop High Command - The Loop Gazette

Channeling a big dose of Die Hard this thriller delivered all the stars for a pre-Christmas standoff in a shopping mall.

Loved it - especially the last 20% where I was constantly chuckling my way to the end.

My only lament: "Bollocks, this is the last Hoon crime thriller!"

Wait! There's more Hoon books!!!

Strongly recommended, 5 'Don't Mess With Santa,' stars

This was the twentieth story from J.D. Kirk that I have given a read, over the last 10 months. I have also read three under the names Barry Hutchison and Barry J. Hutchison. I am hooked. I have read all the books in the DCI Logan and Robert Hoon Series. According to Kirk, the Hoon series is at an end. But I hope not. And the next Logan book is not due for a few months. So I am going back and reading his earlier works under the Hutchison names.

After reading the first book in the DCI Logan Series, A Litter of Bones, I picked up the first Hoon and the next few Logan. I had picked that one, Bones, for a few reasons, but mainly because authors Alex Smith and JE Mayhew have both recommended the author and series. I am a big fan of Smith’s DCI Kett novels and Mayhew’s DCI Will Blake Series. And having ripped through both of their series and slowing working through all of Mayhew’s others works I decided to give this one a try. I can see the comparisons with both Smith and Mayhew’s works. I would set the DCI Logan stories right in the middle, Smiths are darker and more brutal, and Mayhew’s typically focused a little more on the mystery. The Hoon stories on the other hand are proving just as dark and brutal as Smith’s, and this one maybe even more so. The Hoon books are more thriller’s than mysteries. This story took the Robert Hoon saga to the next level. At first it appears to be one thing, but Hoon soon figures there is more at play here, and pieces it all together.

The description of this novel is:

“Former Detective Superintendent, Bob Hoon, has had one hell of a year.

He’s going to Die Hard the **** out of this thing.”

I said before that the character of Hoon is over the top. He exemplifies the stereotypes taken to an extreme. But in this story we see even more of his redeeming characteristics. We see the intelligence that led Hoon to rise to the rank of Detective Chief Inspector. We also see that he is willing to sacrifice for others. And even though he has a past filled with mistakes, he will do what is right. This story has no preface or afterward by Kirk, but Kirk in the afterword of the first Hoon novel informed us that:

“This book was always going to be a challenge.

When I first introduced the then Detective Superintendent Bob Hoon in my DCI Logan crime fiction series, he was so foul-mouthed and unpleasant as to feel almost irredeemable. A larger than life bully with a penchant for bad language, Hoon was a deliberately over the top caricature—a barely human monster who existed largely to make the lives of the other characters that bit more difficult.
Some readers hated him. Others, inexplicably, adored him. And, as the series progressed, I took a perverse delight in making Bob that bit worse in every book. He was a thug, a drunk, and an ever present pain in the arse.

In late 2020, I first had the idea of giving Hoon his own novel. It was ridiculous, I knew. Here was a character so thoroughly unpleasant that even if readers enjoyed his scenes, surely they couldn’t cope with a full length novel in which he took centre stage? Surely they couldn’t actually empathise with such a man and cheer him on?

I tried to push the idea from my mind, but Hoon—because this is what he does—soon forced his way back in. The man is nothing if not persistent, and before long I had stopped thinking about whether it was possible for readers to root for him, and had started thinking about the how.”

This story reads like a mashup of Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Fatman. But instead of a Saint Nick who heals from wounds you have Hoon willing to push through injury, pain, and likely his own death to save others and foil a huge plot! Like Die Hard it takes place during a single day, and what we at first think is happening is by far not the whole story. Like Lethal Weapon we have a few going against the many, mainly Hoon, his sister Berta, and Iris. There are a large number of kidnappers who have taken over a whole mall. They have hundreds of hostages and a ridiculous demand. As they are rounding up everyone in the mall Hoon gets missed. And soon he is off causing problems. He never says “Ho ho ho now I have a machine gun.” But he quickly takes out several adversaries and ups the any quickly.

I have said before; Hoon is over the top, foul mothed, and eager to use violence as a blunt instrument to find out what he needs to know. He is not above manipulating people. But in this story he is just the wrong guy in the wrong place. And he is going to spoil a lot of people’s plans for the holidays!

I want to warn readers that this story is violent, bloody, brutal and full of language, the language just as strong as the others, and if not more violent, by far more gory. It is not for all readers. That being said it is an excellent thriller with a lot of action. It is a great story in an excellent series. I am looking forward to reading more of the Logan and hopefully Hoon novels and books from Kirk’s other pen names. It is an excellent read for fans of Reacher and Bourne, or anyone who loves great action flicks or books. It is an excellent Scottish thriller! Top marks.

Eastgate is the fourth and apparently final book in the Bob Hoon series, about a belligerent foul mouthed ex-policeman who just can’t stay out of trouble. I’ve listened to all four as audiobooks over the past six months - I definitely recommend reading them in order as while you do get some recap of previous events, a lot won’t make sense if you just start here. Conversely, I haven’t read the Jack Logan books (that these are a spin-off from) and don’t think that mattered - although of course now I fully intend to, as Kirk’s humour is right up my street.

Hoon is looking forward to a quiet Christmas at home sniping at his big sister Berta who has moved in with him after the events of Westward. Then he finds himself trapped inside Inverness’ main shopping centre in a snowstorm by a gang of terrorists dressed in Santa costumes who have taken hundreds of shoppers hostage, including Berta and his friend Iris. Hoon is once more going to have to take on the bad guys alone, armed only with his wits, his fists, and his unique line in insults.

Die Hard is one of my favourite thriller tropes, so the idea of Hoon roaming around a mall taking out terrorists in a variety of gruesome ways sounded like a great way to round out the series. Unlike the previous books, where Hoon frequently finds himself on the back foot being beaten up or even tortured, here - much like John McLean, who is referenced so I’m sure it’s not coincidence, stays one step ahead by using his particular set of skills - or those of his friends - to outwit the villains. While the outcome is no great surprise, there’s no guarantee that all of Hoon’s unlikely friends will survive so it was still quite a tense listen. Once again, Angus King’s narration was superb so I thoroughly recommend the audiobook if you don’t mind all the swearing. 4.5 stars rounded up.

My Rating Style: 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ action packed up in flames great end to the series!!! LOTS OF LAUGHS!!

Bob is back!!! Just as belligerent and rude and rough as ever!

It’s Christmas time in Inverness Scotland and sh*t is about to get real!!! By way of synopsis J.D. Kirk provided a summary saying:

If you’ve ever thought that Die Hard would’ve been improved by making Bruce Willis’s character a psychotic, foul-mouthed Scotsman in his mid fifties, then this is the book for you!!

This is the last book in the Hoon series and while I have really enjoyed it …. I do think wrapping Hoon up with a bow and sending him off the way J.D did was exactly the right thing to do. This is a bit of a Christmas crossover special, so if you are a fan of the DCI Logan series then some of your faves will make an appearance here too.

Don’t be fooled though Hoon is (and most likely always will be) the loudest and foulest mouthed of all!!

This book was a lot of fun, we got a bit more of Bob’s sister Berta who is rude and aggressive but great with kids (weirdly enough) and of course we got all the Die Hard action of Hoon swinging around killing people and cursing and generally making a mess!

You may not know this about me… BUT I love Die Hard and I DO think its a Christmas movie… fight me if you don’t (just kidding 🤣) but seriously it is my go to Christmas movie… what can I say Bruce Willis Yippy Kai Ayying all over the place blowing sh*t up just screams Christmas to me… my point…. This book will satisfy that violent, explosive Christmas requirement for those that do in fact believe that Die Hard is a Christmas movie (IT IS!!!). 🤣🎅

Again if you do not like swearing then by now you should know that these books wont be for you but if you have started here then be warned the language is flying and if the F’s, and S’s and even the C’s offend then please don’t read this one you wont like it. Even though it is hilarious and is intended that way if you aren’t amused by bad language then this absolutely wont be for you!!!

For those that don’t mind it or do find it amusing then dive in… I recommend reading the other four books in the series but you don’t have to you could read this as a standalone but perhaps some of the references and characters will go over your head… but there is plenty of action and fun and wild stuff going on to keep you occupied if you just want to dive in at the end.

As I said this was a great ending for Hoon I think it suited the tone of the books and really went off with a BANG!! So to speak!! As mentioned there are guest appearances from DCI Jack Logan and the team but if you are expecting them to be in the entire book as main characters they are not… they are simply guests and the main event is Hoon and the craziness that he gets up to.

So in summary there is a hostage situation that takes Hoon by surprise while he’s off in the toilet, there is action, there are Christmas carols and explosive Santa’s…. SAY WHAAAAAT!!! Yep you heard it Explosive Santa’s. If this sounds like your kind of thing then what are you waiting for 🎅💣💥

Please, please, pretty please, don’t let this be the last in the Hoon series.

Exploding Santa’s, bloody-minded Berta and Hoon on the loo are just for starters. The shockingly brilliant use of every profanity ever created makes this Christmas hostage situation absolutely hilarious (but, if you’re easily offended I don’t imagine this one’s for you).

Guest appearances by the DCI Logan team are the cherry on the top of this high intensity crime showdown.

Read the first three then enjoy this one.

I picked this up in Waterstones in Inverness in the shopping centre where this book is set. Jack Reacher meets Die Hard is right and Eastgate doesn't disappoint. Humour, action, great characters and lots of blood and guts, I mean A LOT. A perfect Christmas read if you enjoy this sort of thriller, if you are at all sensitive or easily offended head immediately to the cosy crime shelf.

OUTSTANDING

JD Kirk has knocked it well out of the park again!
Do not read this book and drink a beverage as it will squarely land on whatever is in front of you when you roar with laughter time and again.
Sure there’s tense moments as the plot unfolds with terrorists and hostages but JD Kirk manages to weave in plenty of humor not just from our hero but his two sidekicks, Berta and Iris.
Robert Hoon is the hero that keeps you laughing with his twisted outlook on everything.
Not for the faint of heart as the author finds new ways to bring the gore while flavoring the dialogue with a steady barrage of cursing.
That having been said, the laughs are worth every drop of the gore and swearing ten-fold over.

The last in the Hoon series and my personal favourite. Bob and Berta, the dream team, against an army of killer Santas, what more could anyone want in a book? Several laugh out loud moments, even more than the previous 3 books. Such a great series I have binge read all 4 this week

Outstandingly brilliant!

Well, that was an amazing read. The storyline was really very clever, and It was great having the whole team involved. If this is the last book in this wonderful series, it certainly has ended well. I'm just loving Iris, he is a brilliant addition and as for Berta, well words truly fail me. I am sad though if this is the last we hear from Berta, Iris and Miles. These additional stories to the inimitable DCI Logan series have been so fun to read. If you haven't read this or the previous three, please give them a go, you really are in for a treat. Bravo JD, you have done it again.

The Final Installment of Bob Hoon's adventures.

Terrorist have taken over the Eastgate Mall. Hoon, Iris and Berta stop by the mall to get a coffee and get Iris on his train. Hoon has to shite, so while away, and unbeknownst to him, the terrorists plan takes effect.
Meanwhile, Miles and his assistant are tasked with getting Suranne to safety.
It seems that a terrorist attack, 300 hostages, is just an elaborate ploy? Is it? Is the Loop involved?
Can Hoon save the day, save Miles, save Suranne?
We once again get some Logan, Tyler and Hamza in this story. Great way to finish this 4 part series.

This is my favourite Hoon book by far! All of our fave characters wrapped up in one book. It was kind of nice to have a brief respite from the Loop in this one and a situation that we haven’t experienced so far in Kirk’s books.

The tension was high because you just never knew what was going to happen and there were so many possibilities that things could go wrong. I really enjoyed Jack having a more secondary role throughout this one too.

Did I guess the twist? Yeah, but that didn’t affect my reading experience at all and I liked how quickly things picked up from the beginning.

Diehard in a kilt!

When I first met Robert Hoon I really didn’t like him. I didn’t think I wanted to read a book with him as the protagonist. How wrong I was… The Hoon series was a rollicking ride from beginning to end and what an end it was, too! If you haven’t read Northwind, Southpaw, Westward and Eastgate, do yourself a favour and get stuck in. You won’t be disappointed. They are a wonderful mixture of action and comedy (with a lot of swearing and gore, but so worth it) and they just get better as the series progresses.

I love the entire series of books from J.D. Kirk that feature Jack Logan and Bob Hoon. They're interesting and hilarious (full of snark and sarcasm) and every character is awesome. It's even better when you listen to the audiobooks because Angus King is an excellent narrator.

Bob Hoon is back! And this time he's bringing his sister!

Absolutely brilliant. The perfect book for the festive period.

When a routine trip to an Inverness shopping centre is interrupted by a squad of heavily armed Santas, Bob Hoon, his sister, Berta, and an old army colleague, Iris, find themselves trapped alongside several hundred terrified hostages. This book has an almost cinematic feel (the inspiration is very obviously Die Hard), mixing as it does action (there are some great one on one fights), humour, bad language, exploding bodies and entrails, a showdown with the main bad guy, and a huge amount of blood. And then there's Berta... What a brilliant and scary character. And its also great to see Jack Logan and his team make an appearance.

I’ve just spent another enjoyable couple of days with that old Sweary Mary, Bob Hoon. Readers of the series will be delighted to hear that his irascible sister Berta appears again. They and an old army friend of Bob’s go into the huge Eastgate shopping centre for a quick coffee, just a couple of days before Christmas. Life goes down the pan almost immediately. It’s another blast of a story – a totally unbelievable but absolutely entertaining episode which appears to be the last. I hope pressure from fans will produce a few more points on the compass. There’s all that ‘north by northwest’ business untouched!

The last in the Hoon series. This was a good book but for me it was not as good as the rest of them. It’s like a budget die hard movie made in Scotland. Don’t get me wrong it still had the normal foul mouthed ex superintendent along with his sister Berta backing him up . Hoon goes into the shopping centre and uses the bathroom. Meanwhile there is a takeover and he realises this when he comes out and being Hoon gets involved up to his armpits. Jack Logan makes an appearance as Hoon grips the bull by the horns and runs riot as per usual. It’s not as much of a page turner as the rest but it was ok

The big bad Hoon is back in toon! More foul mouthed fun with disgraced former police officer and general mad bastard at large Bob Hoon. This time, our anti-hero takes on a terrorist hostage situation in the unlikely venue of the Eastgate shopping centre in Inverness. Expect violence and extreme but creative swearing.

Long time JD Kirk fans will be glad to know that DCI Jack Logan and his team feature as does Hoon's sister, the equally obnoxious Berta and Skye's most notorious one-eyed Liverpudlian arms-dealer Iris.

Highly recommended.

Eastgate : A Robert Hoon thriller by JD Kirk was awesome. Full of love, laughter, spills and thrills and the impetus and drama didn’t let up until the last page.
The last of the Robert Hoon series was worth waiting for and was the best Hoon story.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
Highly recommended

I have enjoyed listening to Eastgate on Audible 10/07/2024.
It gives a different impression of the story listening to it. Still very funny and entertaining.

This is probably my favourite book in the 'Hoon' series, great storyline, i like how festive it is (i love Christmas) wasn't sure what to expect in this book after the previous 3, but i am glad i read it, i REALLY hope we see more of Hoon, either in this series or 'Where the Pieces Lie' (DCI Logan book 19)

I love how there are mentions of Logan, 'Boyband' (Tyler) and Khaled in this series. Makes all the strories connect well

Die Hard in Scotland and with Robert Hoon as John McClane? Merry Christmas to me! As funny and suspenseful as usual, it made me laugh uproariously, while cringing at what was going on. Bonus: this time we get cameos of Jack’s full team so… yippee ki-yay!

Pure unadulterated violence

I am no prude and generally enjoyed the Jack Logan series but this book is appalling. Short on a believable story line and heavy on one horror act after another. Leave this book alone!
