This must be the one of the most unrealistic disabilities I have ever come across. The hero was hit by a car at the age of six. According to the narrative his left ankle was crushed as well as his right knee and lower leg.
When we meet him as an adult he is 6'4" and walks with crutches, but the author keeps talking about braces instead. It took me a quite a while to figure out that she meant crutches and not braces.
The hero's gait is described as lumbering "using the strength of his arms, even though his left leg appeared normal except for his left foot being turned outward and him dragging his right leg."
Later on we learn that his left foot stopped growing and is the size of a child's because "the growth plate was damaged". This just does not make any sense - every bone in the foot has it's own growth plate(s). If every one of them had been damaged, it would mean that his foot was so mangled it would have been amputated after the accident. If the growth plate in the tibia had been damaged it wouldn't have grown as long as the right leg.
It appears his right lower leg is paralysed and the ankle fused, but since his upper legs are both supposedly fine there is no reason to do the whole dragging himself about thing.
Realistically he would probably wear a KAFO on his right leg and would have had his left amputated BK, but he would most likely not need crutches most of the time.
Overall the story was just one cliche following another - previously abused wife with little girl is afraid of men and relationships, hero thinks the problem is his disability, the ex-husband shows up and the hero saves his damsel in distress for a HEA. Not for me.
Ethan Searle is determined to not be seen as a broken man, even though his legs are damaged from a childhood accident. Autumn Reader has just returned to her hometown, leaving behind an abusive ex-husband and her trust. But when a chance encounter at church leads to misunderstandings is friendship even possible?
But Autumn's two year old daughter - Brittan may be just what these two hurting people need to heal. Autumn's mother Nancy feels that Ethan and Autumn are prefect for each other and goes out of her way to play matchmaker. But will Nancy's efforts do more harm than good?
Meanwhile Nancy is pursuing her own potential romance with Jacob. But is there hope for something more when in two and a half years they have only had four dates? Nancy is determined to have something more for both herself and her daughter.
But Autumn's ex, Trent is obsessed with her and can't decide if he wants to get back together with her or to make her pay for his year in prison. When Trent leaves Las Vegas to find out if he has a child and to bring Autumn back into his life a life and death situation ensues and the reader is quite literally in suspense.
The Broken Path is a story of rediscovering trust and love. We must learn to see beyond the physical limitations and rise above the mental ones to grasp what life is offering us. This is another winner from Cami and time well spent.
I was provided a digital copy of this book by Cami Checketts for the purpose of this review.
I just finished reading The Broken Path. It is a romantic suspense written by Cami Checketts. A woman is raising her child alone with nobody to help her but her mother. She meets a man at church who she falls for, but she’s afraid to let go and trust him. Will she put let her past go and open herself up to him or will she run him off?
I really loved this book. I loved all the inspirational messages it had in it. I felt for all the characters. I especially felt for the little girl. I loved how much personality she put into the little girl. Many books that have children in them give them little to no personality. So it was quite refreshing to see this girl so filled with personality.
I wish that there was parts that would have been more talked about. I also wish there would be a short story for years later. I find myself curious on what happens after. I know it sounds silly but it’s true. The author is very good about completely sucking a person into the book. It’s very amazing!
I fully recommend this book. I’m sure there are many people out there who will love this book as much as I did. One of the best things about it is that it’s a clean romance. There is very little sexual parts in this book at all. I’m sure a lot of readers will appreciate that. I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to read this book.
I couldn't even finish this book. Maybe the second half improved, but it was too cheesy for me. The physical attraction was way too much of the story and the switch from total miscommunication to pouring out their hearts seemed impossible.
Autumn has moved her and her daughter back to her mom's home after an extremely abusive marriage ended in divorce. Ethan has been disabled since a young child when he ran out into the street and a car ran over both of his lower legs. Can these two each of whom feel they are misfits to some degree find faith and a new relationship in life that will make the three of them into one perfect family?
This is my first read by Cami Checketts and it was an enjoyable, quick, easy contemporary romance read.
Cami Checketts is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE AUTHORS!
I finished ANOTHER one of her books tonight! AND I am posting a Blog Tour post tomorrow for her new book Dying to Run...So check back to read about that :)
The Broken Path is SO GOOD! Cami has a way of writing that pulls you in and and captivates you until you know how it ends... In other words...You CAN'T put the book down!
Autumn has moved back to her home town with her little girl. She is divorced and is trying to make a good life for her and her little girl. She is determined to do it on her own...no man needed; nor trusted, ever again.
Ethan, or Effan as little Brittan calls him, was severely hurt in an accident when he was little and can't picture a woman ever wanting him and his deformed legs.
But...
No one planned on Brittan falling in love with Effan and pulling her mother along :)
Everyone can see how happy they would be together as a family...
If only Autumns' heart can get past the mistrust of her ex-husband, Trent.
Mystery, suspense, romance, and love of a child make this a MUST READ!
I am already a fan of Cami Checketts, so I was excited to read this. I was not disappointed. Broken Path is a poignant tale of strength, faith and love all wrapped together.
This story is told in the two main characters POVs and its interested to experience the emotions of each one. Both have baggage, but both find love in each other even though they fight against it. I loved every word of Broken Path.
I loved the flow of the story and how it ended. It is a sweet story and will leave you feeling satisfied at the end.
This book caught me at the beginning. Two broken souls come together and make a better life. She came from an abusive marriage. He suffered a crippling accident as a child. Both carry baggage that make it hard to understand each other and find happiness.
The daughter in this book, Brittan, is very cute. I loved reading about her and the insight that a two year old can bring to the adults. She knew what was going on long before her mom did.
I read this book in one night. It's clean and interesting.
PG - no sex (some kissing), no swears, but some adult-drama This is a new writer for me, and I'm going to look for more of her stuff. Her characters are religious, but not overly so. I loved how the author dealt with the H's disability and his/the h's feelings about it. I loved how the h was SO attracted to the H and saw him for the wonderful and beautiful man (body and soul) that he is. Great book
This one got my heart. I love this sweet story. A strong woman and deep love. I can't even explain. My own dad was in a wheelchair most of my life. Half of his. This one was just really close to my heart. The sweet little girl is my personal favorite.
This book very quickly became one of my absolute favourites of the many I've read from this author, and my enjoyment only increased with each page. Featuring two beautiful, emotional love stories, fantastic chemistry across the board, and more than one intense swoon-worthy moment, I loved getting to know these characters - 4.5
I thoroughly enjoyed this emotionally charged romance with engaging characters and a satisfying conclusion. I loved the little girl, Britton, such a sweet child. Happy ☺reading 📚!
Cami Checketts really knows how to make her stories unique. I have read a few other of her works and have enjoyed them tremendously because of it. She also knows how to combine clean romance with suspense flawlessly. Though The Broken Path was not perfect, I found myself captivated with the story.
What made this book unique was the male love interest: he was disabled. In many romance stories, the male hero is strong, brave, handsome, and fully functional. Ethan was all of these except that he didn't have working legs. I loved how Cami was able to handle the disability tastefully and make Ethan appear very sexy. I also loved how many women swooned over him despite of his legs. It reminded me that there are many people out there who can see past the physical appearance and really appreciate a person for who he (or she) really is. The fact that our heroine, Autumn, saw Ethan as a strong and attractive hero made me appreciate this book even more.
As much as I loved Ethan, I did have a couple of issues with this book. One, I did not enjoy how Ethan and Autumn acted with each other almost the first half of the book. They were melodramatic. I completely understand that these two characters were hurt and were learning how to trust again, but their repetitive insecurities felt childish. The other thing I was not too keen on was the baby talk from Autumn's daughter, Brittan. Brittan was an adorable little girl but a lot of her dialogue was unbelievable and got on my nerves. Luckily, the second half of the book got better and made me forget about these issues.
The last part of the book was thrilling. Both of Ethan and Autumn's pasts came back to haunt them. I found myself at the edge of my seat wondering how things were going to develop to a happy ending. I don't want to say too much in fear that I would spoil things, but I have to say that the twist towards the end had my heart thumping.
Overall, this was another great book. Though it was not perfect, I still loved its uniqueness. I would like to read more unusual love stories like this.
*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Judie Brown's most recent book, The Broken Path, could not have come at a more crucial juncture in the fight to protect human life and religious freedom in this country. It should be read by every American, not just Catholic Americans.
How uplifting and encouraging it is to read the words of someone who has long recognized that there is such a thing as Absolute Truth and that such Truth is not and cannot be subject to negotiation or compromise. One of those Truths is that abortion and artificial contraception are, and always will be, intrinsically evil acts, for all human beings, whose Creator demands they stand up for the dignity of all human live, from the moment of conception to natural death.
How disheartening it is to see even now how many Catholics still think that there is some way for our political and religious leaders to compromise their way out of the recent unconstitutional infringement on the right to the free exercise of our religious beliefs. This sad state is nothing new. Judie has been warning of this pending crisis for some time. She has challenged Catholic Bishops and Catholic Politicians for years to stand up for the Truth. Most of them have ignored her plea. Strap yourself tightly in your chair. This will be an upsetting and disturbing ride but a necessary one. Mrs. Brown does what she has always done - she unabashedly speaks the Truth, no matter how uncomfortable it may make some feel and no matter the personal attacks she must suffer.
She challenges us to do now what we should have been doing from the very first instance any government entity directed us to act contrary to our religious beliefs - No! Never! We will not comply!
How many lives could have been saved had we had the courage to defend and live out the Truths of our Faith, as Mrs. Brown has urged Catholics and her Church to do for such a long period of time? Our past failures to heed her advice may soon result in each of us having to choose between preserving our physical lives and losing our souls?
I started reading this by mistake, but by the time I realized it was a romance novel, I was begrudgingly far enough into it that I just... eh?? decided to just read the rest. That being said, I'm going to try to rate it objectively, rather than how I actually feel about having read it.
Because lemme tell you, this book was so not my type.
-1 star The kid was cute, though written unrealistically for the sake of artificially propelling the story forward.
-2 stars for the sheer unlikeability of the main female character. She just pissed me off constantly. So many misunderstandings with absolutely no desire to get to the bottom of it. It seemed like the guy could have accidentally stepped on her toe and she would have reacted by storming off and spiraling into a droning monologue about how much he hates her, and why does he hate her, and damn he's so hot but augh, he hates her so much OBVIOUSLY!!!!! Augh. That shoit got old. Fast.
+1 I'll return a star because I appreciated how overall clean the book was. No disgusting sex scenes or gross descriptions about smacking lips or wet tongues... ew. I'm happy to be spared of that.
Overall, if this is your kind of thing, then.... maybe? I donno, I'd have been way happier having not read this, but it was there.
First and foremost, I absolutely LOVE Ms. Checketts novels! They are wonderful and beautiful. It is not every day that you find a true Christian novelist! These wonderful stories are full of romance and mystery; I am so lucky to have stumbled upon her work!
Do you like romance? Do you like suspense? Well then you have come to the right place! "The Broken Path" is an EXCELLENT novel that kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the very end! It's not every day that you learn of a heroine that has overcome an abusive past, but in the heart of this novel we find the beautiful Autumn and her daughter Britt. Can the cripple, but still very capable Ethan protect her from her past and teach her to love again? In this amazing novel, you will have to keep reading to find out.
Please, let me be the first to beg you to pick each one of them up and read them at your earliest convenience!
One of my favorite things about Cami Checkett's writing is her imperfect characters. I can really relate to their flaws and quirks. In The Broken Path, most of the characters have a broken life, either from divorce, death or disaster. Tall, dark and handsome, Ethan can't let people get past his disability or the huge chip on his shoulder, not even his father. Through his abuse, Trent broke Autumn's body and her heart. The one light in her life is her whimsical daughter Brittan. Can Autumn learn to trust and open her heart to love once again? I also love Jacob, the gangly, balding plumber who persistently flirts with a second chance at love. This book is filled with heart-stopping moments of suspense as well as golden moments of love and acceptance. This clean read deals with physical disability, rape, spousal abuse and assault.
Autumn doesn’t trust men after having divorced an abusive husband. But the first time she lays eyes on Ethan she feels some kind of connection. Ethan, who was crippled after being hit by a car when he was 7 years old, gets testy when the beautiful woman tries to help in to the church building the first time they meet. He also feels a connection to her but doesn’t like people to help him because he’s a cripple. These two met in passing several years ago when Ethan and she were students in college and again when Ethan saw Autumn in the hospital after her husband had severely beaten her. Will Ethan be able to win Autumn’s trust and then her love or will she keep fighting her attraction to the sweet man who tries so hard to win her love? Throw in a sweet and precocious not quite three-year-old and you get a beautiful story.
I would recommend this book to anyone it was a very heartwarming story that I can't imagine not being able to read it. I just read the whole book in less than one day. I think of all the characters in this Brittan made the story that much more enjoyable. I think she was the main character of the story. I think my heart actually stop when Trent came into the house and saw his daughter for the first time I thought he was really going to hurt her or take her and never let her be seen with her family again. I have read hundreds of books and I think this is one of the most heartwarming and touching book I enjoyed the most
I loved this book. The innocent eyes of a child can sometimes make us look at things differently. Finding trust in humanity and the opposite sex can be hard after a terrible relationship but Autumn finds herself in a position she didn’t expect to be in again possibly ever. Ethan also has some issues to work thru as he thinks every woman views him as a cripple but as Ethan and Autumn are able to form a relationship with the help of her daughter they both find themselves changing and wanting to change for each other. It is a such a sweet story and once again Cami write a book I can’t seem to put down until I’m done! Totally worth the read!!
I really liked this book!! It didn't have steamy love scenes, there was no billionaire, cowboy or rock star. There was a man, Ethan, with a disablitly who fell in love with a single mom of a two year old little girl. I think he may have fallen for Brittan the little girl first. From the moment you meet Brittan she captures your heart. Autumn fist relationship was abusive, her ex raped her and went to jail. She moves back home with her mom and meets Ethan. It takes a while before she can trust and just when she starts the ex shows back up. Love the ending and the characters in this book!!
I really enjoyed the story line, normally books with characters that have had accidents deliver a happy ending that presents characters with an almost perfect recovery. I enjoyed that Checketts portrayed a real ending. I loved all the characters and enjoyed getting a perspective from each of them. At times I felt as if the problems between. Ethan and Autumn were repetitive to such an extent I had to double check I wasn't rereading the same page again.
This story deals with multiple difficult problems: Spousal abuse, trust, perceptions of the handicap, kidnapping. Autumn has very little trust in men because of her former spouse who beat her until she miscarried and then later beat and raped her. She meets Ethan and is enthralled with him, but he believes she has nothing but pity for him because of his disability. This is their journey to finding love and trust. Life would be so much easier if everyone stopped, listened, and were honest about their feelings.
I got this e-book free ages ago, but had never read it since I rarely read e-books. I needed something to read, and didn't have any books with me, so I looked through the books on my Kindle Fire and thought this one looked good. It was a great read, and I really liked the main characters, especially Ethan as he dealt daily with his handicap. I found it as hard to put down as the suspense novels I typically read, and am interested in reading more by this author.
It was a clean Christian novel, with the exception of one use of "damn" that I caught
I read this book in a day it was so good! I felt so bad for Ethan. Thinking that no one can love you because you're different. And Autumn....she thinks he's so hot from the waist up that it barely matters to her. Ah, it makes the heart flutter to think that such things are possible. And Everything, of course, is possible with God. :) A must read if you are looking for that feel-good feeling!
I really enjoyed this book. It was beautiful and intense. It was a realistic love story in my opinion. They didn't fall in love right away. It took time. They both had jaded pasts, but they may be able to have the power to heal each other. This is a very religious book, but it's a beautiful religious book. I loved listening to this book. I can't wait to actually read it. I fully recommend it. The author did a wonderful job!
Great story of an unexpected love. Autumn is still recovering from an abusive husband, but has a good life with her two year old daughter. Ethan had his legs badly damaged as a child, and needs braces, which make life difficult., They meet at church, and he likes her a lot. She isn't sure she can trust any man, even though she is attracted to Ethan..
Autumn and her toddler, Brittan moved back to her home town and move in with her mother after sending her ex-husband to prison for abuse. Then she meets Ethan but he seemed scarred but on to inside. He has been disabled from age 7 and used braces to help him walk. But Autumn doesn't see that. Only the upper strength of his upper body and Brittan only sees a nice man.
Really enjoyed this book. Nice to see someone who had a rough time in the past have a second chance to find real love. Single moms have a hard time and anyone with a physical challange can have a difficult time dating and developing relationships Especially after a domestic violence situation. It was wonderful to see Ethan conquer Trent.
