Only continuing to listen to this series because I want answers to what happened to her sister… this might be the last one I read though. Writing is awful, only the main character can do anything right, and it moves along soooooo slow.
Showing Some Growth This just isn't ever going to be my favorite suspense series. I've almost quit it twice, but I keep coming back, so that does indicate some positives. I have to admit, in this particular addition to the series, FBI Agent Lily Dawn is finally showing a little growth. But she's still got a long way to go. She's argumentative, reactionary, hot-headed, and downright juvenile at times.
I was happy to see some breakthroughs in areas of her life, regarding her parents and her FBI partner, because in the previous 3 books there just didn't seem to be much. It still feels like I'm reading a Jr. Detective story where the author needs to feed the reader certain information repeatedly and dumb down the dialogue so the reader can keep up. There are still WAY too many times that the dialogue is unnecessarily repetitious and even silly, especially when it comes to Agent Dawn making comments that would make Capt. Obvious giggle like a loon.
There are things I genuinely enjoy about this series. It's a bit different with its concept of the FBI working with various countries in the Caribbean to combine knowledge and LEO's. I love the locations used (who wouldn't?). I also enjoy the antagonists, who are usually a bit different. Plus, I enjoy the good ol' Texas wit, common sense, and decency of Lily's FBI partner.
If you shy away from most mysteries because you feel like they talk over your head, this may be a good series for you. But if you're the kind of fan who prefers the deep thinking mystery/suspense/thriller stories (Agent Pendergast comes to mind), then you'll want to skip this one.
Lily and Xander have to find another serial killer that is leaving his victims on trains and at the same time deal with Xander's proximity to her parents and to the changes in their relationship. The culprit has a totally distorted reason for committing the crimes and will only be caught after extensive work done by the duo and after their lives run some risk. The ending brings questions to be fulfilled by the next story. The book could use more proofreading. I thank the author for the ARC.
