What terrifying tales lie beyond the cellar door? What creatures await to devour you? Will you open it? Are you brave enough?
Jackson Arthur is born and raised in Ohio. He lives there with his wife, daughter, cat, and chinchilla. He has always been a fan of horror and his favorite author is Stephen King. He mostly writes scary stories but also dabbles in the weird and abnormal. Some of his short stories have been narrated on YouTube and Spotify.
This is the first collection of short stories I read from this author and won't be the last. If you like horror and want to spend a night and a day dreading your shadow -and your own mind-, this is the book for you. I enjoyed the stories, especially the last four. They are not only scary as in make you scream and sleep with the lights on, but scary food for thought. I am left wondering about our psyche and how fragile the human mind can be at times. It made me want to take vitamins and meditate. Really... I need a nice rom-com for reassurance. I think the author has done a great job. If you're into horror stories, don't miss these ones!
Horror stories have always gotten to me! I love books that have different kinds of short stories. Always something to surprise me! Looking at the cover I knew it was going to be interesting, and that it had a scary/horror concept to the book. The story of Joesph had me interested, and how he woke up, and not knowing what was happening! How he cannot decide if this is the true reality and a horrible nightmare. I am not going to spoil anything. But if you love horror stories, then this is the story for you! Well done to the author!
This is the second set of horror stories that I have read and I love from this author.
I love how the author brings out the point that there is a darker side to all of us. In some it prevails and it others it doesn't. In these stories most of the characters are themselves monsters and I really liked that fact.
While the previous collection by this author was more of horror... These stories are more thought provoking. My favourite ones are - I dream of monsters, the devil below and the last one.
Cellar Door is Jackson’s second anthology of stories and while the first was good, this one is better. Jacksons writing has matured making the stories deeper, more intense and more frightening. Like episodes of the Twilight Zone or Night Gallery each one draws you in with interesting characters and each has a dark and haunting sense of foreboding. Like all good horror they leave the reader with disturbing questions and wanting more. I look forward to more from Jackson.
Jackson has promise. While I will suggest that his prose needs some maturing and better editing, he shows a rich depth of imagination that can be both graphic and subtle all at once. And I love the title (a reference to one of my favorite movies).
This is a great collection of short horror stories. Each has a different feel to it that makes the stories more interesting. I recommend this book to all who enjoy short story stories.
An engaging and highly readable collection, with a common theme of horror arising from the most commonplace situations. The characters are rich, varied and really reach out.
The minute I started reading Cellar Door, I knew it would be interesting horror stories and really, all the stories were quite interesting and creepy. I loved how the narrator emphasizes the horror and excitement in these stories. I have really enjoyed it, and highly recommend it to anyone.
What a great read this was. I think Jackson Arthur has a couple of other short story collections, so I'll check them out too.
I kept a few notes on each story, so here they are, rapid fire:
The Unexpected Friend - 4/5 - Good start to the book. Had me interested right until the end and then leaves it with you to imagine what happens next.
Dorothy (She Ran Up The Stairs) - 3/5 - Nice little ghost story. Sad, though.
Evolution, Inc. - 4/5 - This was an idea that's been done before but the set up for the story was quick and pays off in the end. More sci-fi than horror though.
Black Ice - 4/5 - Not a new idea, but the isolated and dark scenario made this one.
I Dreamed of Monsters - 5/5 - Best of the book. Deeper than you'd expect from a short story.
The Devil Down Below - 4/5 - Pretty dark, but very awesome.
Jupiter Street - 2/5 - Poetry, meh...
Awake Into A Dream - 3/5 - Bit of a trope that's been overdone, but still a solid read.
Shackled and Chained - 5/5 - Pretty dark, but amazing.
I came across this author by chance and I'm glad I did because Cellar Door is a solid and entertaining batch of short horror stories. The stories are atmospheric, clear and well written, fun to read and creepy. My favorite stories include Black Ice, the Devil Down Below, and Shackled and Chained. I'm very happy to include this book in my horror library collection. I'll be reading more of Jackson Arthur in the future. Check him out.
