Sally Roth is an award-winning author of 20 or so popular books about birds, nature, and gardening, including the best-selling "Backyard Bird Feeder's Bible," and a contributing editor for "Birds & Blooms" magazine.

Her latest book is "An Eye on the Sparrow: The Bird Lover's Bible," which uses quotes from the Bible as a jumping-off point for examining the natural behavior of the birds behind those Scriptures. It's a bird book, and it's for everyone, religious or not.

Sally's also an enthusiastic public speaker, whether it's grabbing a stranger on the street ("Hey, want to see something cool?") or talking to an audience of hundreds ("Hey, want to see something cool?"). She'll be appearing in the Michiana area (northern Indiana/Michigan) in early spring of 2013, as well as other places.

She and her husband Matt Bartmann share their home in the high Rockies with two dogs, one cat, a family of pine squirrels, a hard-working packrat named Sisyphus, a spotted skunk who lives beneath the house, a well-fed bunch of birds at the feeder, and a stable of old Volvos.

Great resource book for attracting butterflies AND hummingbirds. Very colorful and detailed with factual information and pictures.

Recommendations of attractant flowers, trees and shrubs , which was helpful to me. Not just the plant, but it’s soil, water, sun/shade requirements, which is a no brainer when categorized that way. 🙂

The use of water features and feeders and fruits to attract. There’s actually a chapter on garden design and the behavior of butterflies and hummingbirds. Lastly, an intensive helpful pictorial gallery of butterflies and hummingbirds.

I so miss the variety and amount of butterflies we used to see while growing up with open prairies in the city of Chicago. I am grateful to now have a large suburban lot with native trees and plants and animals. My garden is a continual work in progress - and I am proud to say my yard is now officially part of a pollinator corridor, where bees, butterflies and birds are encouraged to stop by, eat, drink and rest and we humans, get to enjoy their visits.

This is the book to get on gardening for hummingbirds and butterflies. It has a lot of information on the lifecycle, behavior, and needs of hummingbirds and butterflies, plus a comprehensive reference with illustrations and information on each species. There are some good plant lists organized by various sites and formats, though I would have liked a "master list" for easy reference and better comparisons between plants. A good step above all the other books on the subject that I read. This is the one I'd reach for first every time.
