What is True? is the 11th title in Etan Boritzer s best selling children s book series on character education and difficult topics. In this book, Etan explores how we can try to discern between facts and appearances in our world. Children are asked to carefully consider their actions and thoughts based on various types of inquiry and evaluation. What is True? provides both the child and adult reader numerous openings for discussion in order that children may cultivate the critical thinking required to travel through an increasingly complex world.
My wife asked for my response to this book. In a word: it is wonderful! The text provides probing questions and issues in words and images appropriate for children. The theme is "how do we know what is true?" There is no overall story; each pair of facing pages presents a situation and questions related to it. On the left pages, are illustrations, vivid and energetic. They iłlustrate the situation effectively. On the right page, the text explains the situation and asks relevant questions. What is True? encourages a questioning and open attitude. I recommend it highly. It is probably too sophisticated for preschoolers, but children in the early grades would surely enjoy it.
