Ernst Ingmar Bergman was a nine-time Academy Award-nominated Swedish film, stage, and opera director. He depicted bleakness and despair as well as comedy and hope in his explorations of the human condition. He is recognized as one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers in cinematic history.
He directed 62 films, most of which he wrote, and directed over 170 plays. Some of his internationally known favorite actors were Liv Ullmann, Bibi Andersson, and Max von Sydow. Most of his films were set in the stark landscape of his native Sweden, and major themes were often bleak, dealing with death, illness, betrayal, and insanity.
Bergman was active for more than 60 years, but his career was seriously threatened in 1976 when he suspended a number of pending productions, closed his studios, and went into self-imposed exile in Germany for eight years following a botched criminal investigation for alleged income tax evasion.
The Silence (1963) by Ingmar Bergman is the third in a trilogy of films, mostly dealing with family and faith struggles. Mental health, physical health, spiritual health. All intense, and though celebrated in their time, I have a hard time imagining many people flocking to see them today. The Silence is about the things we don’t say to each other, and also the silence of God one senses when in the deepest of struggles. All these films are based on issues Bergman faced in his own life.
The plot focuses on two sisters; Anna, the younger and more sensuous/sexual woman with a young son, and Ester, the elder and more intellectually oriented and seriously ill, and their tense relationship as they travel via train toward home through Europe, on the brink of war.
One way to think of the action--and most of the action is really talk--in these films is as occurring in a kind of hyper-real state where people begin to actually say the things they feel. Many scenes exist without talk at all, silent, but as Ester gets sicker, and Anna goes out to be with a man, Ester makes her disapproval clear and they begin to dig into their differences. I had to look it up, but I recalled that some people think of the two sisters as two sides of the same woman, one sensual, the other intellectual. The boy speaks little but watches everything and is like the conduit through which we experience much of the conflict.
Bergman writes, "These three films deal with reduction. Through a Glass Darkly – conquered certainty. Winter Light – penetrated certainty. The Silence – God's silence – the negative imprint. Therefore, they constitute a trilogy.” It was and remains a critical success, but against all odds and the expectations of the filmmakers themselves, it was a box-office hit!
I just reread the screenplay, in a collection of the trilogy, and will add more thoughts after I see the film again.
